song without end

This will sound counter intuitive but any chance this tedious, too long biopic had of being un-tedious flew out the concert hall window when George Cukor replaced Charles Vidor as director after ol Chuck bought it, three weeks into production, reportedly in the arms of a female bit player (and guessing who the luscious babe in question was is a good way to pass the time during all those dull piano recitals. Other ways are thinking about the state of your favorite baseball team or what you're going to have for lunch tomorrow). Cukor is unquestionably a better director than Charles Vidor but he's only good wirth sophisticated, tasteful material like "Philadelphia Story", "What Price Hollywood?" and "Adam's Rib". Whenever he's asked to enliven shlock, as in "Chapman Report" ,"Les Girls" or here, he reverts to his usual good taste and sophistication and, in the process, bores us to death. And Capucine can't act, full stop. Give it a C.
