(1929) The Mysterious Island SILENT SCIENCE-FICTION ADVENTURE/ ACTION

Adapted from the book by Jules Verne which this version was held back and then re-released again made almost during the time when there was a demand for sound speaking movies. Co-written and co-directed by Lucien Hubbard that as the movie opens, it has Count Andre Dekkar and his crew building the submarine, with Nicolai as Dekkar's right hand man.. And because it was during the Russian revolution, the set up also dwells on Baron Falon double crossing Count Andre Dekkar by letting in the opposition army running through the gates. In the middle of this ruckus is also a love story between a commoner, Nicolai (Lloyd Hughes) and Count Dekkar's daughter, Countess Sonia Dakkar (Jane Daly).

Because I had fun watching the 1961 version "Mysterious Island", I was curious what this version is like, wondering whether it was any more better or worse. The central idea of Verne is used, except with the story takes place in Russia during the Russian revolution, with the Captain Nemo-like persona is actually the Count Andre Dekkar played by Lionel Barrymore. One of the problems with this movie is the fact that at the opening, I thought there was only one submarine being built, and a test run of that submarine, but it's like, as soon as the movie continues further, it turns out there were two different built submarines. And it's like, when the Countess Sonia was escaping, on two different occasions, she had an opportunity to escape once through a secret doorway since both the bad guys and the viewers had no idea there was another corridor they could have escape on, and no didn't! And when she was freed when one of the crew cut the ropes both had every opportunity to jump into the water and swim, and they instead make an attempt to taking the other submarine viewers had no idea was even there in the first place!! Huh! Like where did that second sub come from! It is like the entire environment is restricted to that area as if there is no where else to go. With three different directors, the overall experience is directed like it was made on a whim.
