A Light in the Darkness
17 November 2023
"The Making at the Heart of the World", follows Alina Starkov, a young mapmaker who discovers she has a rare and powerful ability to summon light. She is taken to the Little Palace, where she meets the mysterious General Kirigan and the other Grisha, who are people with various magical talents. Alina has to adjust to her new life, learn to control her power, and face the dangers of a world divided by war and darkness.

The episode is well-paced and engaging, with stunning visuals and a captivating soundtrack. The cast delivers excellent performances, especially Jessie Mei Li as Alina and Ben Barnes as Kirigan. The episode also introduces some of the fan-favorite characters from the books, such as Genya, Zoya, and the Crows. The episode explores the themes of identity, belonging, and loyalty, as Alina struggles to find her place among the Grisha and to reconnect with her best friend Mal, who is still in the army. The episode also sets up the main conflict of the series, which is the threat of the Shadow Fold, a massive wall of darkness that splits the country of Ravka and is inhabited by deadly creatures.

The episode is a great adaptation of the source material, while also adding some original twists and surprises. It is a must-watch for fans of the books and newcomers alike, as it immerses the viewers in a rich and complex world of magic, politics, and romance. I would rate it 8/10.
