'Pirates' rode a wave of hype and got some mainstream press back it's day because they spent serious money. Over 1 million dollars to be exact. Which was unheard of in an industry built on low cost, max profits. There's special fx, grand costumes, a real ship and of course X rated content wrapped in story format, but this adult film isn't the revolutionary title many people made it out to be.
Captain Reynolds (Evan Stone) wants to be a pirate hunter, but has little faith in himself. Much like the ship's crew except first mate Jules (Jesse Jane) who believes in him. Rescuing a woman at sea, Isabella (Carmen Luvana) gives him the opportunity he seeks when he learns evil pirate Captain Stagnetti (Tommy Gunn) is charting a course to a remote island where a magical staff if retrieved will give him mighty powers.
I feel this needs to be said upfront - I have nothing against hardcore - but let's be real here. Everyone got hung up on the big budget. The special fx shots are low grade, the green screen work near the end is poor and the story is rather boring with one bout of misogynistic dialog. How anyone can say with a straight face that this tale is fun even without the sex is feeding you a line or lying to themselves. There's nothing going on here beyond the sex. As was typical of that period, an R-rated cut was released to cable tv and DVD. Don't do yourself a disservice and watch that version.
The acting here is decent all things considered, but Evan Stone is tops. The guy can deliver lines and effortlessly do comedy. If you're still reading, I can tell you there's some particularly aggressive girl/girl combos. Jesse & Janine, Jesse & Carmen. As for boy/girl content, I did enjoy seeing former Penthouse Pet Devon at the height of her beauty while Carmen has a good tryst (or two). However you don't always get the angles you want, condoms are heavily in use and the lighting isn't always good. Jesse & Carmen get the most focus, but the tattooed Janine feels right at home in this material.
