French film noir movies were darker and bleaker than the American ones. Maybe more realistic, too. Truth be told, i prefer the Americans.
Too many sleazy people here. I didn't like anyone, i didn't empathize with any character. Still i was rooting for Gabin's character because he was not totally rotten as the others. This is a good crime/drama and i am glad i watched it, a lot of things to like here, every cinephille will enjoy this. There is a nice build up introducing the characters, and then, there are many intense moments, suspense and action. This gets better by the minute. Still, i didn't love it and i found it a bit overrated.
In any case, Gabin gives a great acting performance.
