Four Stories for Four Friends
14 December 2023
In a Martial Law ridden Philippines, Four Friends has Four distinct Stories to tell. Each are having a problems and are trying to piece together their position in the world around them.

Moral does feel like the first modern Philippine film.

Unlike the films of Brocka and Bernal that I had watched, there is a direct quality to Abaya's film that feels entirely hers. Her characters spoke their mind AND has problems way beyond anyone comprehension. I do think, in parts, is that these women are somewhat priviledged BUT their upfront and are willing to be judged. Her female characters just feel like what modern female characters are. Even the way they speak reflect closer to the modern Taglish common in all hellscape of Manila.

The crowning glory of the film is its script.

It really explore the main character's life in a way that both respects them and enliven them too. Also, I want to laud the film's portrayal of female friendship. All are given flaws and strengths and most importantly definite character but they just fit together. They are for each other to laugh it off.

Also, the things this film tackled like homosexuality and lesbianism, infidelity, MeToo-esque quandaries, Communism and Female friendzone for a film made barely in the 80s and within the Marcos era. It's quite is insane AND not shocking that it initially flop in Philippine Box Office. I do think that the film can be too literal with its messaging. Andolong's School story and Homie Husband storyline and Alajar's singing career storyline do get preachy at times. But at least, both stories stuck landing towards the end.

Then the actresses, probably one of the best acted Filipino film. The material is so rich, thus the actress has so much to work for. From Alajar's subtle not-so-good singer trying her luck storyline, to LT's tomboyish lovefool character, the girls just ate the scenery. Even Laurice Guillen, in a smaller role, has her great moments. Again, kudos to the script really taking its time to explore each of the girls AND making the friendship really bloom. Its just acting masterclass.

Bumping from 4 to 4.5

Highly Recommended.
