Unsteady Early 'Painted' Western
18 December 2023
The Painted Desert looked kind of interesting due to the appearance of Clark Gable. His first somewhat major role as supporting actor but his solid and confident acting style allows him to stand out, in a good way. Most of the other cast members are very weak, in particular William Farnum who apparently has not been made that is is not a silent film, drags the whole production down. The story itself is simple and basic but there it is unable to create any real tension throughout. Originally a black and white film that has since been colorized, and rather poorly. Despite the low colorization quality there are still some visually interesting images created, of which I appreciated. But even with that and an interesting Gable, The Painted Desert disappoints from beginning to end.
