Review of Shanks

Shanks (1974)
6/10
William Castle departs
23 December 2023
This oddball end to William Castle's directing career casts Marcel Marceau as a deaf-mute who joins up with a mad scientist to reanimate dead bodies. Wacky as that plot sounds, "Shanks" actually managed to receive an Oscar nod for Best Original Score (it lost to "The Godfather, Part 2"). It's not really a good movie or bad movie, more of a how'd-they-come-up-with-this movie. I suspect the viewers will be surprised to see Marceau out of costume.

One thing about the movie that now looks cringey is when the protagonist takes the girl to the castle. Would anyone be okay with a scene where a grown man takes a girl off somewhere nowadays, even if he does nothing bad?

Other than that, it's an interesting movie. Co-star Don Calfa (Einstein) later appeared as Scarface in "Foul Play" and the mortician in "Return of the Living Dead".
