The gift of the sea to the freedom of Greece
31 January 2024
The production is uneven in quality but the final impression in view of the whole is overwhelming. This is above all a very beautiful film replenished with Greek pathos of the freedom fighters for independence in the 1820s, and all that's missing is Lord Byron. The question mark which remains in the end is what Varvakis really loved the most, the freedom of Greece or the sea. The film begins with his commitment to the sea and ends with a final commitment. Maybe he combined the two with each other, the freedom of Greece equalled that of the sea, and in the freedom of the sea he found the freedom of Greece. Sebastian Koch makes a very sensitive interpretation of his complex character, and his closest friends Ivan and Lefentarios.(Evgeny Stychkin and Juan Diego Botto) live up to that sensitivity. John Cleese as McCormick is more debatable, unfortunately you can never forget that he is John Cleese and as such something of a comic. The music is also perfect, quite Greek all the way, and match the beauty and melancholy of the film perfectly.
