Maddeningly banal
18 March 2024
I am sorry, but I am calling "emperor has no clothes" on Ozu.

If you make a film with a dull story, banal dialogue, no action, one camera angle and no camera movement you've practically filmed a painting.

Now, that might fly with Zen Buddhists. But it's gonna put most contemporary audiences (esp Western audiences) into sleep mode pretty darn quick.

It's pretty much the Japanese equivalent of the French artsy-fartsy snoozerama: Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay. Well, with less s3x. This is, after all, 1930 Japan.

Ozu has gotta be one of the most unimaginative directors of all time. He probably should have been a painter. Or an accountant.
