Along came another Exorcism.
16 April 2024
Along came the Devil is closer to a classic 80s or 90s style horror more so than most films in this genre nowadays. Although I'm not entirely sure this is a good thing as it feels slow paced and less effective in today's times. The reason most reviews are negative is because it's too similar to a much bigger film in The Exorcist. The appearance of the film is too light at times for the horror genre and mainly relies on quick jump scares. Once again it is about possession, being possessed by the devil, much like the Exorcist. The audience is introduced to Ashley who has a rather traumatic upbringing as a little girl living with her abusive father alongside her sister contained within the closet. Ashley and her sister are expected to keep out of the way during their father promiscuous activity with a new lady, seemly without a care in the world for his daughters.

Later Ashley (Sydney Sweeney) fully grown into teen years developing through adolescence is sent to live with her estranged Aunt Tanya (Jessica Barth). Both actresses are riveting in performances adding more believability and authenticity to the film. The film has many moments of silence hoping to catch its audience off guard with sudden noise and shocking bursts. I didn't feel much from the score in terms of anxiety or intensity and the story is pretty basic considering it follows a narrative closely resembling The Exorcist. The problem is there has been so many of these type of films which have had more impact whereas this one appears and disappears from the mind rapidly. Forgettable maybe but enjoyable enough for a one time watch mainly because the acting is good. Some scenes just kill time and feel like they have little purpose although teen parties is something we have came to expect from this genre.

The ending felt different and the two supporting Pastor John Douglas (Matt Dallas) and Reverend Michael (Bruce Davison) both played their parts well. The effects were okay although nothing felt overly scary just more sicking to watch.
