Not exactly a complex plot--even for 1913
planktonrules2 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This is an incredibly simple film with not a whole lotta plot--even by 1913 standards. Pearl and her boyfriend want to go to a dance, but they haven't got fancy clothes. So, they both "borrow" clothes from their friends without asking. Later, the friends discover that their clothes are missing and they seek out the two larcenous idiots (naturally, they were bound to get caught) and throttle them. In the end, the two ladies make up as do the men--who are now both in jail. This is pretty much all there is to the film--nothing more. The acting is a bit exaggerated and the film itself not especially interesting or memorable. See it if you are a huge fan of the silents or Pearl White (who made better films than this)--otherwise, it's not exactly imperative you see this.

A little rough in places

Pearl White has the skill to make such a picture as this charming. She is ably supported by Chester Barnett and others, and the offering is lively, if a little rough in places and should be very acceptable to most audiences. It is clearly photographed. - The Moving Picture World, July 26, 1913

3 White Shorts

Hallroom Girls, The (1913)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

Pearl White and a friend are invited to a dance but things go downhill after White tries to steal her friend's dress. This short moves somewhat better but again lacks any real laughs but White is a pleasure as is the woman playing her friend.

Pearl as a Detective (1912)

** (out of 4)

Pearl White is hired to see if a husband is cheating on his wife but she gets a few twists when she looks into it. This was my first White film and I must say I don't see what the big deal is. I'm guessing this was meant to be a comedy but I didn't laugh once, although White was quite energetic throughout.

Night in Town, A (1913)

** (out of 4)

Pearl White and her husband go to see his rich uncle who mistakes the bride for his maid. Once again, no laughs here and even White seems bored.
