Mistaken Identities
boblipton12 October 2021
When their employers go on a short trip out of town, butler Chester Barnett and maid Pearl White seize their opportunity. They put on their employers' clothes and invite their friends over. When the master's uncle shows up, never having met his new niece, he mistakes Miss White for her.

It's a nicely laid out split reel comedy. Understandably, at only five minutes there's no time for much in the way of elaborate gags, but the situation is amusing, and it's good to see Miss White before THE PERILS OF PAULINE made her a big star.

decent, but pretty short

Warning: Spoilers
This short Pearl White film wasn't bad for 1913, though by today's standards, it's not so hot. A man gets married and his uncle, who has never met the bride, comes for a visit. At the same time, the couple leaves home and the butler and maid make themselves at home--dressing in the couple's clothes and having a party! When the uncle arrives, he thinks the maid is his nephew's wife. The butler sees the uncle paying all this attention to the maid and proceeds to throw him out and have a cop haul the poor uncle off to jail. The next day, the couple returns and so does the uncle and the ruse is discovered. The film is handled pretty well, with decent acting and pacing, but had the movie been made just a few years later, the film might have been a bit longer and the ending might have been a little more interesting. In this film, they are discovered and that's about it--no slapstick-style ending. An interesting curio and a modestly interesting film.

3 White Shorts

Night in Town, A (1913)

** (out of 4)

Pearl White and her husband go to see his rich uncle who mistakes the bride for his maid. Once again, no laughs here and even White seems bored.

Hallroom Girls, The (1913)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

Pearl White and a friend are invited to a dance but things go downhill after White tries to steal her friend's dress. This short moves somewhat better but again lacks any real laughs but White is a pleasure as is the woman playing her friend.

Pearl as a Detective (1912)

** (out of 4)

Pearl White is hired to see if a husband is cheating on his wife but she gets a few twists when she looks into it. This was my first White film and I must say I don't see what the big deal is. I'm guessing this was meant to be a comedy but I didn't laugh once, although White was quite energetic throughout.
