Social Sins
boblipton6 September 2007
This is an early example of Cecil Demille wannabes doing one of his 'socially conscious' dramas in which people have a great time doing something particularly sinful and opulent in the first few reels, only to suffer the consequences in the last reel. In this case it's Blanche Sweet, in a dual role as twin sisters, who manages to get addicted to opium *and* morphine, while Tommy Meighan stalks around, muscular and deluded.

Unhappily, the entire process of Miss Sweet's debauchery simply manages to make her sleep a lot and disarranges her hair. This is one slow, slow movie, folks and the most interesting thing about it is figuring out how they manage to get another player to interact with Miss Sweet in both her roles in the same shot. I'll save you the problem of figuring it out and tell you: they switch shots around while they're showing the titles. Now you don't have to see it.
