" Over the Garden Wall A Sad Loss "
PamelaShort1 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Sadly this 1919 comedy/drama Vitagraph Company silent film is lost. Directed by David Smith and scenario by Sam Taylor, this modest story is about a man, Mathew Gordon ( Willis Marks ) who's plans in life never work out due to his daydreaming nature. Now as a result of his time-wasting ways, he must move himself, and his two daughters, Peggy ( Bessie Love ) and Frances ( Myrtle Reeves ) to humble quarters. Peggy relishes in the change, and loves to spend time planting a vegetable garden, but Frances isn't as comfortable; she misses the whirl of gaiety life she once had. The next door neighbors are well off, and soon Peggy begins a romance with their son, whom she thinks is the chauffeur. Frances becomes involved with a shady character and plans to elope with him. The more sensible Peggy saves her sister from imminent disgrace, but comes close to compromising herself instead. Her sweetheart comes to her rescue and his real identity is finally established to a very grateful Peggy. So many silent films are lost and many of Bessie Love's early work also fell victim to this sad waste, with only the remaining of some surviving lobby cards as a reminder of this delightful actress.
