Hilda ( Mildred Harris Chaplin ) daughter of a fisherman marries noted physician, Philip Emerson ( Ramsey Wallace ). Hilda soon becomes lonely when her husband becomes increasingly more busy with his medical work, leaving Hilda and their young son Philip Jr. quite neglected. He decides to leave them in the company of his friends, kindly Peter ( Thomas Holding ) and the philandering Robert ( George Fisher ). A serious epidemic of infantile paralysis breaks out, and soon the busy doctor's son is struck by the deadly disease. When it appears the child has died, distraught Hilda collapses. However, the father discovers the child is still alive, but paralyzed, and without telling Hilda he hides him at his laboratory. He tries all he can to cure the child, but nothing works. Finally Peter brings Hilda to her son, and she discovers the truth, but in the presence of her motherly love, a miracle takes place, the child is cured as he walks towards his mother.
The Woman in His House was a very melodramatic story and must of have been a sad film for Mildred Harris, who lost her own child of only three days old in July 1919. Although separated from Charles Chaplin in the autumn of 1919, she was still billed as Mildred Harris Chaplin for this film. Mildred was granted a divorce from Chaplin in November 1920.
