That's Madeleine Hurlock, Not Trilby Clark

Ben Turpin would rather go out goose hunting than stay home and canoodle with wife Madeleine Hurlock, so she decides to run away with marriage counselor Jack Cooper. However, no matter where they go, there are banana peels to slip on, open manholes to slip into, and a cross-eyed comedian with an elephant gun to shoot them.

I'm afraid that Ben Turpin is not my favorite comic, and movies like this, when he's armed with weapons or some other means of killing people, is the main reason why I find him terrifying rather than funny. The talent behind the screen rely far too much on people finding that funny. Which, apparently they did.

Great Hunter Ben Turpin

Ben Turpin, Sennett's best walking sight gag, gets a gun and a wife, and misuses both. Will a sneaky other man alienate his wife's affections, while Turpin wanders around in the woods shooting at stuff as THE WILD GOOSE CHASER?

Ben Turpin's comedy in the 20s generally amounted to standing around with his amazing crossed eyes, and having things happen to him, that are completely incongruous because of the crossed eyes. This can be funny enough, but not usually for the entire length of a two reeler. This one seems pretty typical, and is pretty ordinary. The reminder of the gags are standard order Sennett, with people falling around and getting stuck in the mud.

Almost like two separate movies that come together at the end.

"The Wild Goose Chaser" is one of Ben Turpin's stranger and less satisfying comedy shorts. First, there really isn't that much of Ben in most of the film...which is odd since he is the star. Second, there really aren't all that many laughs, either.

When the story begins, Ben's wife is seeing an attorney about a divorce. It seems all Ben wants to do is hunt and fish....and she's had enough. But soon after, she and the attorney have some adventures and she rushes home to retrieve the letter in which she says she's leaving Ben. What's next? See the film.

Few laughs...mostly because when Turpin isn't in the film it just isn't all that funny. Worth seeing if you absolutely adore silent comedies, otherwise you could do a lot better.
