This played out much like Lindberg's famous flight.

There is a $25,000 prize for anyone flying over the ocean to Paris, so in this Oswald cartoon, lots of goofy flying machines compete. However, a chubby jerk cheats so that the others cannot get the prize. This is odd, as he did seem to have the best plane. As for Oswald, he flies a weinerdog across the ocean! It's all very silly and surreal--exactly the sort of stuff that made these Oswald cartoons so popular. Well done and fun.

By the way, if you see this film chances are it will look and sound like the version I saw. Originally, it was silent--no sound effects or music. But with the success of "Steamboat Willie", a lot of cartoons made before it were re-released with added sound effects and music.

The Ocean Hop was an interesting Walt Disney Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon

Warning: Spoilers
Just watched this Walt Disney Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon on YouTube. In this one, Oswald is entering a plane contest. His rival is a cheater who gums up the wheels of Oswald's plane. When Oswald's plane falls apart, he enlists the help of some mice, some balloons, and a dachshund to get in the race. Even though the villain seems to get ahead of everyone else-because he turned the Paris sign to mislead the others while he goes the right way-Oswald is close behind...While the print I saw wasn't very good, I got what was happening nonetheless. And like Felix the Cat, Oswald uses some parts of his body-not to mention a question mark and the comic strip balloon it's in that appear before him-to help him get out of a jam. Quite amusing, if not hilarious, this cartoon was. So on that note, I recommend The Ocean Hop. Update-Several hours later: I just watched a much clearer print with the original credits and those "mice" I mentioned are actually kid rabbits, presumably Oswald's nephews.

Oswald and the plane contest

Despite Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and his cartoons being popular and well received at the time, they have been vastly overshadowed over time by succeeding characters like Mickey, Donald and Goofy for Disney and the likes of Bugs and Daffy for Looney Tunes.

It is a shame as, while not cartoon masterpieces, they are fascinating for anybody wanting to see what very old animation looked like and what Disney animation (so the late 1920s, before the Winkler and Lantz eras began from the latter half of 1928 onward) was like before Mickey arrived on the scene. There are better Oswald cartoons than 'The Ocean Hop' that are funnier and more inventive. With that being said, there are also far worse that are not funny, completely lack any story, are very unimaginative and sometimes have issues with pacing and even animation, a few only worth seeing for historical interest.

'The Ocean Hop' has been compared to the 1929 Mickey Mouse cartoon 'Plane Crazy'. While it is interesting to see an earlier cartoon from a pre-Mickey Mouse Disney character, 'Plane Crazy' is far superior, being consistently funnier and richer in imagination. There is certainly far more of a story in 'The Ocean Hop' than in especially most Lantz cartoons, though it is a predictable one.

The cartoon is also more amusing than hilarious (a couple could have been better timed) and rarely gets more than that. The scene with the dachshund comes off best.

Animation is not bad at all for a cartoon so old and techniques still in early days, it's crisp and fluid enough with some nice detail, sure there are some rough spots understandably especially with Disney animation becoming much more refined later. The added soundtrack and sound effects add a lot rather than distract, actually improving the cartoon's impact and making things easier to understand.

While rarely hilarious, 'The Ocean Hop' still amuses, while the whole plane setting is interesting to see and quite entertaining and Oswald has the endearment factor at least.

In summary, decent if not great and not quite Oswald at his best (not his worst either). 7/10 Bethany Cox

Today's viewers will not be able to understand . . .

Warning: Spoilers
. . . THE OCEAN HOP without some pertinent background information. First, the $25,000 air contest prize mentioned early during this animated short is equivalent to $397,397.99, as of 7:22 PM Eastern time Nov. 15, 2021. Secondly, HOP's producer Something Dizzy and Oswald's Real Life model for this story, the self-styled "Lucky Lindy," both were infamous for being two of America's most rabid anti-Redacted Minority Group figures on the Planet during the first half of the benighted 20th Century. One was infamous for aping the Fuhrer in his dealings with employees; the other actually had frequent dinner dates with the latter dictator himself. So the canine abuse featured here may be a case of simple doggie torture OR it could harbor a darker symbolic message.

Air race action

Warning: Spoilers
Even if Walt Disney was only in his mid-20s when he made "The Ocean Hop", he was already a very prolific director at that point. It is not a bad movie by any means, but falls flat in comparison to what he did later. It is 1927 (almost 90 years ago) and Oswald was Disney's main character shortly before Mickey Mouse took over. This is still a black-and-white film and runs for 6 minutes. It is basically slapstick humor from start to finish, but there already is a bit of a story too, which is fairly nice and not a given looking at other films made around that time. My favorite part was probably the flying dachshund. Only in film he could be faster than an actual airplane. A bit predictable all the time and not as funny as I would have liked, I cannot recommend "The Ocean Hop".
