Marys husband steals away from their hotel bedroom in the night taking all their money and leaving a note saying that he is deserting her and leaving her for South Africa.the following day,in dire straits she wanders around the nearby British Museum where Herbert Marshall happens to be waiting for a date.He ditches the date and takes Mary(Edna Best) to lunch.He agrees to split his last remaining £200 with her on condition that they meet once a week.He gets her a room in his digs above the restaurant were they are eating.He becomes a successful novelist.They become romantically involved.Despite the fact that Mary is still married they marry bigamously.We then move on 20years.They have a son who is a famous Cambridge cricketer.He has found a woman he wants to marry.Then as of course will always happen in these dramas her original husband comes calling.He has returned from South Africa and wants to extort £1000 for his silence.In a rage Marshall tries to strangle him.However the husband collapses and dies.At the inquest they put forward a concocted story of events.The foreman of the jury doesn't believe them and severely cross examines Marshall but they get away with it.The couple then decide to tell their son and his intended and to make the marriage legal. A rather dated drama which tends to rely far to much on coincidences to drive along the plot.Marshall's acting is rather too theatrical.He would shortly go to Hollywood and attain that sophisticated polish.Slightly surprising that this was passed by the rather staid and moralistic BBFC.After all technically the couple were living together whilst unmarried and there was no compensating ending as beloved by Hollywood and its censors.I don't know whether this was distributed in the States.It would have gotten by in the pre code era.
