The term “scream queen” gets thrown around a lot, even applied to actors who have only done a handful of horror films. But if any young performer deserves the title, it’s Samara Weaving. Not only does she star in the very gruesome post-apocalyptic horror-action movie Azrael, directed by E.L. Katz (Cheap Thrills) and written by Simon Barrett (The Guest), which just premiered at SXSW 2024, but she’s been in The Babysitter, Scream VI, and Ready or Not, among others. In fact, when we ask Weaving at the festival whether she likes being referred to as a “scream queen,” she answers quickly, “Yeah, why not? ‘Scream Queen’ is great. I’ll take it!”
For Weaving, the appeal of horror movies goes beyond the guts and gore most often associated with the genre. “It’s such a good vehicle to explore so many things,” she tells Den of Geek. “For [Azrael], it...

In the 1930s, Universal laid claim to the two biggest horror stars of the era, Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, and it was only a matter of time before the pair would meet on screen. In 1932, only months after each rocketed to stardom in Dracula and Frankenstein respectively, the two were dressed in tuxedoes and brought together for a genial photoshoot that simultaneously announced their partnership and implied a rivalry. Through a series of circumstances, it was another two years before the pair would star in a film together. As one might expect, it was in the most transgressive horror film of the era, 1934’s The Black Cat, a film that remains shocking not only for the early 1930s but even more surprising as a product overseen by the newly enforced Hays Code.
The Code had been established in 1927 as a self-censoring wing of the motion picture industry and an attempt to avoid government censorship.

The Universal Monsters are one of the fundamental building blocks of the horror genre in Hollywood as we know it, where just about every horror film ever made can be related back to one of their many creep shows. Sometimes this connective tissue is thematic, but often it's an overt homage to the monstrous titular character.

Like most movies, The Invisible Man travelled a long and winding road to the silver screen, and perhaps longer and more winding than most. As biographer James Curtis put it in his book James Whale: A New World of Gods and Monsters, “The gestation of The Invisible Man was the lengthiest and most convoluted of all of James Whale’s films. It involved four directors, nine writers, six treatments, and ten separate screenplays—all for a film that emerged very much in harmony with the book on which it was based.” It was first suggested as a possible follow-up to Dracula (1931), perhaps as a vehicle for new star Bela Lugosi, but was dropped in favor of Frankenstein (1931) due to the complicated special effects it would require. After Frankenstein was an even bigger success, both director James Whale and star Boris Karloff were immediately attached to The Invisible Man and several...

One of the most recurring trends in Hollywood right now is the horror remake, and for better, or worse, it isn’t gonna disappear (pun intended) anytime soon. David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist remake may have been met with a geyser of pea soup from the mouths of critics and fans alike, but that isn’t slowing the trend down for the foreseeable future. The Halloween franchise has been picked up by Miramax with the intention of creating a TV series, and a possible cinematic universe, and that’s just hot off the heels of Halloween Ends, erm, ending the recent trilogy with somewhat of a whimper. Another classic horror franchise that...

Last week we used our discussion of Mark Pellington’s The Mothman Prophecies to recover from our month-long theme on toxic masculinity, which included episodes on Funny Games, Deadgirl, Murder by Numbers and Hard Candy.
This week we’re diving back into the world of Giallo with prolific Italian director Sergio Martino‘s Your Vice Is A Locked Room And Only I Have The Key (1972), which is truly the best title ever.
In the film, Irina (Anita Strindberg) is in an abusive marriage with Oliviero (Luigi Pistilli), her drunk womanizing writer husband. When his niece Floriana (Edwige Fenech) comes to visit, a plan is hatched to wreak revenge against the destitute author. As the film progresses, however, it’s no longer clear who is playing who.
Can Irina and Floriana trust each other? Or will the women turn on each other in madness and despair?

Long before Jigsaw and Annabelle, Ghostface and Samara—going back to even before Freddy and Jason—there were the Universal Monsters. These were the creatures and character designs who were so iconic that they defined what the horror genre was to most moviegoers during the earliest decades of talking pictures. Primarily released in two film cycles by Universal Pictures across the 1930s and ‘40s (plus a few outliers on both sides of this), the legacy of these films and the people who made them endures still. It echoes in Halloween costumes and TV specials, merchandise toys and candies, it’s even informing recent Blumhouse films and Netflix’s Wednesday. Right now, you can go to any Universal theme park and meet the Monsters as un-goodwill ambassadors at “Halloween Horror Nights.”

This article contains spoilers for The Fall of the House of Usher.
The Fall of the House of Usher features many gruesome deaths as each member of the Usher family is killed in equally bizarre ways. But for all of the blood and gore we see throughout the series, there’s one death in particular that left some viewers worried about the fate of a furry member of the Usher clan. Thankfully though, series creator Mike Flanagan reassured fans that not everything is what it seems in episode 4.
Episode 4 titled “The Black Cat” focuses on Napoleon “Leo” Usher’s (Rahul Kohli) death and is based on the Edgar Allan Poe short story of the same name. The episode begins with Leo finding his partner Julius’ (Daniel Jun) cat Pluto brutally murdered. After getting blackout drunk the night before, Leo worries that he killed the cat and quickly disposes of the...

The Fall of the House of Usher showrunner Mike Flanagan has been largely keeping quiet amid the rollout of his latest Netflix horror series, but he took to Twitter/X late last week to clarify a burning question from a fan. And if you’re going to take a single question from the internet, it might as well be about a cat.
The question: “What did cats ever do to you?” in reference to episode four’s gory battle between the ill-fated Leo (Rahul Kohli) and a black cat named Pluto in a story that’s loosely based on Edgar Allen Poe’s short story “The Black Cat.”
Flanagan wanted to make it clear that after the cat goes missing, the menacing replacement cat he adopts is entirely a hallucination caused by the mysterious Verna (Carla Gugino) and that Pluto is alive and well.
“Okay. So… ‘The Black Cat’ was written by Edgar Allan Poe,...

The 1950s are considered the “Golden Age” of science fiction cinema, and that’s not just hyperbole. By many accounts, more than 200 sci-fi movies were released during that decade. And while the film industry had sporadically produced quality sci-fi in the years before—ranging from Aelita (1924) to Metropolis (1927), to The Invisible Man (1933)—it wasn’t until the 1950s that classic after classic began to arrive like riches from a long-lost hidden treasure.
And when we say classic, we mean films that essentially created the template for all science fiction movies that followed. Just look at this list. The first half of the decade brought us The Thing from Another World, When Worlds Collide, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Godzilla, and Them!, while the second half ushered in This Island Earth, Forbidden Planet, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Blob, The Fly,...

These last few years the Criterion Channel have made October viewing much easier to prioritize, and in the spirit of their ’70s and ’80s horror series we’ve graduated to––you guessed it––”’90s Horror.” A couple of obvious classics stand with cult favorites and more unknown entities (When a Stranger Calls Back and Def By Temptation are new to me). Three more series continue the trend: “Technothrillers” does what it says on the tin, courtesy the likes of eXistenZ and Demonlover; “Art-House Horror” is precisely the kind of place to host Cure, Suspiria, Onibaba; and “Pre-Code Horror” is a black-and-white dream. Phantom of the Paradise, Unfriended, and John Brahm’s The Lodger are added elsewhere.

When I read that Mike Flanagan was planning to turn The Fall of the House of Usher into an eight-hour mini-series for Netflix I did a major double take. I’ve read the story, and I’ve seen an astounding number of takes on it, from Roger Corman’s classic to reimaginings like The Fall of Usher and Lady Usher. But there was no possible way I could see someone getting eight hours of material out of it.
And I was right, rather than an adaptation of one story The Fall of the House of Usher is an adaptation of Poe’s works en masse with Roderick and his sister Madeline Usher reinvented as heads of a Sackler like pharmaceutical empire.

A new episode of the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series was released over the weekend, and with this one we took a look back at a film that came from two masters of the genre: George A. Romero and Dario Argento. The film is the 1990 anthology Two Evil Eyes (watch or buy it Here), and you can find out all about it by watching the video embedded above!
Scripted by Romero, Argento, and Franco Ferrini, Two Evil Eyes consists of adaptations of two separate Edgar Allan Poe stories, The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar and The Black Cat. The film has the following synopsis: George A. Romero provides unabated horror in “The Facts in the Case of Mr. Valdemar”. As he lays dying, Ernest Valdemar’s scheming young wife and her lover anxiously await his demise – and his vast fortune. But when Ernest dies unexpectedly while under hypnosis,...

Zachary Levi returns as Billy Baston/Shazam in “Shazam! David F. Sandberg directs and, in true superhero style, peppers easter eggs throughout the film for the most eagle-eyed superhero fans.

Ever since the early days of film, horror fans have been comparing and contrasting the scariest moments of our favorite movies. We love to share the specific scenes that get under our skin, hoping that we’re not the only ones afraid to turn out the lights. Ranking these moments also gives us a sense of accomplishment and we compare and contrast to find the films that test us the most. If we can watch the scariest moments imaginable and come out the other side, we might just be brave enough to take on the real world.
Before Bravo became known for chronicling the sagas of housewives, the network attempted to solidify this hierarchy with a formal list of the most frightening moments film has to offer. Although Universal had struck on big hits with "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" in 1923 and "The Phantom of the Opera" in 1925, studio honcho Carl Laemmle, Sr. was no fan of the horror genre. It was his monster-obsessed son, Carl Laemmle, Jr., that encouraged the studio to adapt the then-popular stage production of "Dracula" to film. The movie, released in 1931 and directed by Tod Browning, was stagey and nightmarish, and it deeply burned itself into the collective unconscious. Bela Lugosi, as Dracula, taught the world how vampires behave.
"Dracula" was one of Universal's biggest hits, and Carl Jr. knew that multiple more monster projects could be instantly pushed into the pipeline. The 1930s saw the release of "Frankenstein," "Dracula's Daughter," "The Invisible Man," "Bride of Frankenstein," "The Black Cat," "The Invisible Ray," "Werewolf of London," "The Raven," and scads of others. Horror became the studio's niche.

Still by far the best adaptation of the Robert Louis Stevenson story, Paramount’s glossy pre-Code is also one of the most prestigious horror shows on record. Fredric March won an acting Oscar and it’s one of Miriam Hopkins’ best performances. The film is sexually daring and technically astute — with the help of cameraman Karl Struss director Rouben Mamoulian makes use of every cinematic trick he can conjure. The horrible Mr. Hyde is conceived as a near-simian primitive man, equating unrestrained lust and desire as something ‘society’ must repress. The disc packaging says it’s two minutes longer than the 2004 Warner DVD . . . but it’s not.

Sony's 'Universe of Marvel Characters' could now include ‘Marvel Comics “Black Cat’ played by “Euphoria” actress, mixed martial artist Sydney Sweeney in the currently shooting Marvel/Sony feature “Madame Web”:
"We have the next seven or eight years laid out as to what we’re going to do with that asset", said Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman Tony Vinciquerra about the studio's "Spider-Man" spin-off movie rights including “Madame Web”.
"And that will not only be on the film side -- it’ll be on the TV side as well. Our television group will have its own set of characters from within that universe that we will seek to develop."
"'Spider-Man' connects to a lot of characters," said Sanford Panitch, President of Columbia Pictures. "There are villains, heroes, anti-heroes, and a lot are female characters, many of whom are bona fide, fully dimensionalized and unique..."

One Shot is a series that seeks to find an essence of cinema history in one single image of a movie. It must have been a familiar scene for actor Patrick Magee. Here he was again playing an aging bachelor, surrounded by audio recording paraphernalia, listening to voices out of the past. The first time was on stage at the Royal Court Theater in 1958: a different room, different audio equipment, playing a different aging bachelor. The play was Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape, in which the decrepit, solitary Krapp listens to tape recordings of his younger, sometimes comically confident self. Krapp, caustic and disillusioned, has diminished since making his first recordings, growing ever more contemptuous of his youthful enthusiasms. Though the role was played by many great actors, including John Hurt, Michael Gambon, and Harold Pinter, Beckett wrote the part for Magee, or more specifically for “Magee’s distinctively Irish voice,...

When Nobuhiko Obayashi sadly passed away in April 2020, most social media was filled with many posts showing pictures of the director and perhaps the feature most people remember, his 1977 film “Hausu”. While there is no denying about the quality of said film, given the vast career of Obayashi which spans over five decades, these pictures also indicate that so many viewers still need to discover for themselves the multitude of themes and the experimental visual style of the majority of his body of work, in which his debut feature makes up only a small portion. One way to start this journey into Obayashi’s work may be the upcoming release of his penultimate work, “Hanagatami” by Third Window, a touching and very poetic film about growing up during war times.
“Hanagatami” is screening at the Hong Kong Arts Centre, as part of the Obayashi Nobuhiko Film Show Case

Roger Corman helped Vincent Price create his reputation as a horror movie star and in 1962 he helped him to dismantle it—already tiring of the gothic grind, the 37 year old director allowed rare humor to creep into his Poe series in the otherwise morbid Tales of Terror, a trilogy of economical horror stories written by Richard Matheson. The usual shocks were laced with laughs in the film’s second segment, The Black Cat, featuring a flamboyant Price as a two-timing wine taster. The Kiss Before the Mirror
Blu ray
Kino Lorber
1933 / 1.33:1 / 69 min.
Starring Nancy Carroll, Frank Morgan, Gloria Stuart
Cinematography by Karl Freund
Directed by James Whale
James Whale’s The Kiss Before the Mirror opens on familiar terrain for the director of Frankenstein—a moon-lit backroad littered with crooked trees and clutching branches. A figure tip-toes out of the darkness toward her destination—not a mad scientist’s castle but a swanky post-modern bungalow where her lover waits. The woman catches the moonlight quite well, thank you—she’s played by an incandescent Gloria Stuart and she has just escaped her husband for a rendezvous with a self-impressed roué played by the blankly handsome Walter Pidgeon. The two engage in pre-sex small talk that is so coy, so ear-grating, that it’s clear Whale is preparing them (and the audience) for some awful comeuppance.

Happiest Season (Clea DuVall)
Happiest Season, Hollywood’s first major lesbian Christmas rom-com, has everything you’d expect from a Christmas movie: snow; sweaters; mismatched family members coming together under one roof; characters saying they hate Christmas and then succumbing to holiday cheer; conflict; satisfying resolution. Director and co-writer Clea DuVall embraces cliches, but filtering them through a lesbian perspective allows old tropes to gain new context. Family dysfunction carries extra weight when viewed through the lens of heteronormativity. The happy couple’s falling-out hits deeper because it’s wrought with the anxiety of coming out. Their fairytale ending feels all the more precious because it’s hard won,...

Sony Pictures TV is shopping around their evolving 'Universe of Marvel Characters' for live-action TV streaming, including "Silk" and "Black Cat":
"We have the next seven or eight years laid out as to what we’re going to do with that asset", said Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman Tony Vinciquerra about the studio's "Spider-Man" spin-off movie rights.
"'The Black Cat' is enough of her own character with a great backstory and a canon of material to draw from.

Happy Gialloween! The timing on this year’s theme is actually pretty perfect, because I have slowly begun dipping my toes into the giallo waters over the past few months. Once upon a time, giallo and Italian horror in general was a big “no” for me. It all seemed too weird and too unfocused. I just didn’t connect with Italian storytelling and would always wind up frustrated and bored.
But over time, I have come to warm to more loose, more abstract styles of storytelling, and decided to give it another go. And I really have been enjoying what I have been seeing. Sometimes age, life experience, or just changing tastes merit another chance on some of the art that you initially pushed away.
Over the past few months, I have watched (and enjoyed) films like Tenebrae, Don’t Torture a Duckling, Deep Red, and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage.

"'The Black Cat' is enough of her own character with a great backstory and a canon of material to draw from.

The current pandemic has brought many industries to a standstill, moviemaking included. Scott Cooper might tell you as much considering he has several projects on the backburner—two nondescript movies with Christian Bale and another with Elisabeth Moss—yet he isn’t sure which will get made next in the current climate. Even his last movie, horror-thriller Antlers, was supposed to be released already. Yet it was while talking about that latest one, alongside producer Guillermo del Toro, during a virtual Comic-Con@Home panel that Cooper revealed his dream project: a movie about young Edgar Allan Poe’s time at West Point.
To be clear, Cooper doesn’t necessarily view the concept as a traditional Poe biopic, nor as a purely historical endeavor. The logline for the idea he shared with del Toro and Comic-Con audiences at home sounds, in fact, more like the type of chiller that would appeal...

We have an eclectic assortment of titles on tap for this week’s home media releases, including some Hammer Horror, a post-apocalyptic television series, several brilliant modern genre classics, and a handful of indie horror to boot. Classic horror fans are definitely going to want to pick up Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition Blu-ray for Kiss of the Vampire, and if you’ve been holding out for the definitive release of A.T. White’s Starfish, your prayers have been answered with a new Deluxe Edition Blu that also includes a CD. 12 Monkeys: The Complete Series is headed to both formats on Tuesday, and if you’ve somehow missed out on seeing The Taking of Deborah Logan, you can remedy that by buying either the Blu-ray or DVD (and then thank me later).
Other releases for July 14th include Jurassic Shark, Game of Death, The Black Cat (2020), Killing Brooke,...

I’m certainly no expert on Filipino genre cinema, but I’ve seen a few; and of those, all were produced or co-produced by American companies looking for exotic locales at thrift rate prices. Until now, that is. Let’s talk about The Killing of Satan (1983), an all-Filipino production that somehow managed to escape and receive distribution around the world, perplexing everyone who saw it, with the exception of Filipino audiences who knew exactly what director Efren C. Piñon (The Interceptors) was dishing out: a simple morality tale of good versus evil, with naked slaves, little person satanists, face ripping, and succubi who turn into snakes and kittens. You know, the usual, but still effective.
Released in June, The KIlling of Satan was picked up for distribution by Paragon, who sent it out to unwitting video stores keen on anything horror with ‘Satan’ in the title; and there it languished...
