Puzzle of a downfall mother.
ulicknormanowen6 December 2022
Plot: an alcoholic woman ,victim of a disease on the street,is taken to the hospital by a young man ,Georges ;he discovers she's a countess, disowned by her husband ,a ruthless man who brings up alone his daughter ,Elisabeth .Georges falls in love with her ,but her father does not want to hear of it. The destitute mom, the fallen aristocrat ,lives with a shady man, Bob. Georges suggests he meet her .

By and large ,considered one of Marc Allégret 's best achievement , this film needs to be restored ,its remaining copies being hardly watchable .It's an exponential melodrama, with a grandiose finale, complete with heavenly choirs , a Gothic atmosphere in a gloomy castle and a good performance by Gaby Morlay as a doomed wreck .

The one problem is Jean Tissier's performance :the actor has a tendency to turn tragic melodrama into comedy.
