Don't get mad at me, Stooge fans, but...
ftgplus43 December 2006
...I actually like this better than the original that it's a remake of, "Corny Casanovas". Maybe it's because I saw this one first, but mostly I think it's because I find a lot of the Stooges' violent slapstick (which there's less of here) *less* funny than other gags they do.

Nonetheless, it's obvious that Joe is not receiving as much slapstick as Larry. Even though the heavy hitting isn't my favorite part of a given Stooge short, the imbalance between Larry and Joe here is so obvious as to disrupt the flow of things. Joe practically has a target painted on his bald head at one point, for gosh sake!

While I can't say I prefer Joe to Shemp or Curly, I do think he gets an unfairly bad rap from fans. Barring his glaring lack of getting hit here, he fits right in. And, as always, he brings his own character to the part that isn't Shemp or Curly, but doesn't have to be. And he cracked me up with his head-polishing and ketchup-on-the-pancakes bits!

Personally, I question whether a *real* Stooge fan would bash a Besser short just because it's a Besser short...

stick with the original

For you stoogeheads who haven't seen this short, but have seen (and watched repeatedly) the original version 'CORNY CASANOVAS', then stick to watching that one and don't waste your time on this clunker. All of the Besser remaking Curly or Shemp shorts miss the mark, but this attempt is extremely putrid. Poor editing, and transitions from old to new footage (and vice-versa), horribly redone gags, Moe treating diaper Joe like a delicate 2 year old instead of cracking his skull like he did with Shemp & Curly. In short, it stinks!

"Take it easy! You're tearin' my heart out!"

Warning: Spoilers
"Rusty Romeos" might be the most violent of the Three Stooges shorts with Joe Besser. The reason for that may be because it is a remake, with much overlapping of stock footage, of a Stooge short with Shemp titled "Corny Casanovas" (1952).

Here are the highlights from "Rusty Romeos" (if you haven't seen it, do not read any further). The ending of this short, in which Joe shoots his chiseling girlfriend (Connie Cezon) in the rear end with tacks and spanks her with his rifle, is so much funnier than how the original short ends, and it may be one of Joe's funniest bits of business in any of his Stooge films. Earlier, Larry and Joe accidentally shoot Moe in the rear with the same tack-shooting rifle, and when Moe swallows the tacks, Joe surmises that they are "income tacks," putting his own childish signature on the line which Shemp stated in the original. As Larry and Moe fight, Larry recreates a fighter's dance that Shemp had made famous in the original as well as in a few other Stooge shorts; Larry gets creamed with the first punch and retaliates with a coal shovel. And finally, Joe really shows his childish sissy persona when the Stooges dig into the oddly-shaped pancakes ("Flipper's Fluffy Farblongented Flapjacks").

"Rusty Romeos" may not be the best Stooge short with Joe Besser, but it is still worth seeing. Joe seems right at home with Moe and Larry in this short, and it's nice to see him get in the last joke before the fade-out.

Rusty remake

Warning: Spoilers
"Rusty Romeos" is a Three Stooges short film from 1957 and one of their many remakes. This one here is based on "Corny Casanovas" from 1952, a Shemp short, but for this one here Joe Besser had already filled in after Shemp's sad and surprising death. This one had its 60th anniversary last year. The names Jules White, Jack White and Felix Adler are attached to many Stooges short films and this one here is basically a Stooges only show almost as we have a few scenes with the love interest gold digger of the trio, but cast-wise that is it. Still I would say that the three make the pretty mediocre material better than it is, so good for them. Nonetheless I cannot say that I understand why this was remade and this applies to many of their works to be honest. Besser adds not too much of value that Shemp hasn't, even if he has the Curly looks a bit, but the Stooges were old men at this point and it's tough to say what sucks more about this one that their energy is gone to quite some extent or that so much archive material here is included. So yeah, I give it a thumbs-down. Only watch if you liked the original this is based on and I must say I found that one pretty weak already too even. Watch something else instead.

Average stooge short
holme-123 May 2001
This episode was okay, Larry takes most of Moe's wrath while Joe just takes a little bit of hitting from Moe and Larry. The fight was kind of good but I would've preferred the original ending. Overall, an average stooge short. My Rating: C

Good Stooges short with Joe!
Movie Nuttball17 June 2004
The Three Stooges has always been some of the many actors that I have loved. I love just about every one of the shorts that they have made. I love all six of the Stooges (Curly, Shemp, Moe, Larry, Joe, and Curly Joe)! All of the shorts are hilarious and also star many other great actors and actresses which a lot of them was in many of the shorts! In My opinion The Three Stooges is some of the greatest actors ever and is the all time funniest comedy team!

This here is a very good Three Stooges short with Joe. The things that happen in this short film are a bit rough but is funny! Connie Cezan plays the Stooges' girlfriend and plays the role quite good. She in a very different looking woman but yet a very attractive one as well. There is also a Three Stooges short with Shemp with an alternate ending.
