Much better than I had expected.

The only reason I decided to watch "A Woman of Mystery" is that it features a tiny part played by Michael Caine...and I've seen nearly all his movies. Thank you, Angelo, for finding this film and bringing it to my attention.

The story begins with Ray (Dermot Walsh) being given an idea for a feature story for the magazine...to write about the suicide of some relatively unimportant young woman. He hates the notion but the editor insists that Ray can dig and make a great story out of it. Later, he learns other writers refused to take the story...and he wishes he'd done the same.

At first, Ray isn't very keen about doing the story. However, after a bit of digging, he learns that someone had tried to kill the woman previously...and she was scared. So, this 'suicide' might not be a suicide after all!

While I agree with other reviews which point out that this is a cheaply made film, I don't agree that it's poor. I liked the plot and thought it was an interesting story. Not brilliant...but well worth seeing.

"A barman was busy re-arranging the dust"

Warning: Spoilers
A magazine writer Roy Savage is tasked by his editor to cover the suicide of a young woman from the human interest angle but on looking into it further the reporter discovers something sinister afoot. This low budget film from the Danziger Brothers is engrossing for most of its length but falters when it substitutes action for investigation. Until then the plot unfolds quite nicely. The identity of the main villain took me by surprise but it was plausible.

Dermot Walsh is fine as the dogged Savage and there are the usual good supporting performances from Ferdy Mayne, Martin Benson and Ernest Clark. Unfortunately Hazel Court and Jennifer Jayne don't get to do much which is a shame as both were capable actresses.

There is a lot of narration which could have been reduced and the breaking of the fourth wall not needed but on the whole a reasonable entertainment.

Is it Suicide?

Dermot Walsh plays a reporter for a British magazine who has been given an assignment of writing story about Jane Hale, who the police say has committed suicide. The editor wants the Walsh to dig into the woman's life to find out why she did it.

When Walsh begins investigating but initially looking at the autopsy report and quizzing the police the asking questions to people who knew Hale trying to find out what she way like and anything that might indicate why she committed suicide. Things start heating up, and he realizes that there is more to the woman's death than what the police knew.

One of the more interesting Danzinger Brothers efforts.

Promising Start But Dull Execution

Made by the Danzigers for the bottom half of a United Artists double bill. This film starts with a promising premise but falls away to become rather routine and by the end rather boring.Dermot Walsh is acceptable as the lead.It makes a change from the American fading stars that were usually parachuted in for the American box office.Clearly this indicates that this was not a consideration. The film is told in flashback which I always consider an unsatisfactory device.Difficult though to understand why the periodical would take such an interest in the death of a suicide nor how it would be that the coroner would miss such an important issue as a bruise on the corpse.

The Cheaper The Producers, The Gaudier The Patter
boblipton1 August 2020
Fleet Street reporter Dermot Walsh gets handed an assignment no one else on staff will touch: a hat check girl at a minor club has committed suicide.Write a nice human-interest story on her and how she came to be so filled with despair. As Walsh investigates, he finds a lot of money, a tie to an escort racket and much else.

It's a cheap Danziger Brothers second feature that tells its story in the laziest manner possible, from showing the audience a street sign to a voice-over by Walsh that explains why he's doing what he's doing. The hoods are obviously hoods, using strained, slangy metaphors. Hazel Court plays Walsh' girlfriend; Michael Caine is reputed to be present, but I wasn't interested enough to look closely, nor did his usually distinctive voice draw my attention.
