Rare James Hadley Chase's adaptation...
searchanddestroy-19 December 2018
I can't say if this is a good or flat adaptation because I have read the novel, which it is from, a long time ago and have completely forgotten it. There are so many of them with JH Case, and so many look the same: blackmailers, greed, seduction...But I can say that's not the first time Robert Hossein plays in a film adapted from Chase, as he was the same in films adapted from Frédéric Dard, his long time friend. Remember MEFIEZ VOUS FILLETTES, CHAIR DE POULE, LA PETITE VERTU...Well this very film is rather flat,,yes, but I can't compare with the book because, I repeat, I don't remember it. But I got bored very quick. Only the beautiful body of Marina Vlady - true Hossein's city mate at this time - kept me awake. Chase was not always well inspired, he wrote as a factory chain worker with his type writer; he used the same scheme for a dozen books and changed of topic from time to time. Butt that remained very exciting to read, unlike this tepid feature pulled by a uninspired director Maurice Labro. Nothing to do with Philippe Labro.
