An artist comes to Camp Henderson to choose a marine to paint for a recruitment poster. Sergeants Hacker and Carter vie for her eye and in the end she paints Gomer with Sergeant Carter's eye.
Lou-Ann Poovie must decide between ex boyfriend Monroe or Gomer when her father butts in. Her dad thinks Gomer is a wimp until Gomer stands up for himself declaring his love for Lou-Ann.
Friendly Freddy who sells fake goods accidentally sells Gomer a real ring and tries to break-up the relationship between Lou-Ann and Gomer to get the ring back.
Sergeant Carter and Miss Bunny break-up when Gomer and Lou-Ann tag along on a date. Then Gomer dates Miss Bunny and Lou-Ann dates the Sergeant in attempts to re-unite them with each other.
Sergeant Hacker sets Gomer up with a burlesque dancer as a joke telling him that she's a school teacher from out of town. Gomer wins her over with his charm and when he finds out the truth he accepts her for who she is.
Gomer buys Dolly, an old horse, to save it from the glue factory, without taking into consideration the question of 'how you hide a horse on a marine base?'
Sergeant Carter finally gets Gomer transferred out, to Sergeant Hackers squad. Then Hacker and Carter make a wager with Gomer going to the loser. Sergeant Carter throws the contest to get Gomer Pyle back.
