Tup Tup is another uniquely fascinating animated short from Zagreb Films
tavm5 July 2007
This is another animated short from Zagreb Films that I just discovered on Cartoon Brew as linked to YouTube. Tup Tup is, I guess, the two musical beats constantly heard from a man in a big-city apartment who is trying to get some sleep but can't because of those sounds. The rest is a kaleidescope of sounds and images and music that it's impossible for me to describe so all I can say is you should watch this short on YouTube or anywhere else you may stumble on to this short online. The director is Nedeljko Dragic and boy, what an imagination he has! Oh, and one more thing: Oscar-nominated Tup Tup is definitely not for children so that's my warning to you to those who were wondering.

I wish that more people got to see the animated shorts

Nedeljko Dragić's "Tup Tup" comes from Zagreb Film, so you know that it's going to have a weird side. Sure enough, this is one of the wackiest, most bizarre cartoons out there. In the process of trying to get some sleep, a man experiences a mixture of sights and sounds. That's as well as I can explain the plot. It's clear that a lot of animators - especially those working for Zagreb Film - take pleasure in the opportunities that animation offers. They like to come up with the most surreal images, as opposed to the more lifelike cartoons to which people in the west are accustomed.

Basically, cartoons don't need to be fancy or refined. After all, animation is simply another kind of filmmaking. "Tup Tup" is an enjoyable cartoon, although I should note that it's not for little children.

Quite an Experience

A man wakes up in a hospital bed and embarks on a surrealistic journey where he meets one bizarre character after another. The world is a crazy mix of flaming heads and kissing frogs and no end. Is it a dream sequence? We never find out. And yet it doesn't matter. It's a feast for the eyes and ears.

Rather unusual short, even for Zagreb Films

Warning: Spoilers
This short from Zagreb Films was nominated for an Academy Award for Animated Short. There will be spoilers ahead:

Zagreb Films has a very distinctive style and the shorts coming out of the studio are of generally an extraordinary quality. Zagreb raised the surreal to an art.

Even for Zagreb Films, Tup Tup is unusual. The short centers around one man trying to get some peace and an overbearing beat. It follows the man's interactions with others. The man is rather abrasive and most of his interactions are almost always testy. All hell breaks loose and the man gets some peace, only to find even that intolerable.

The ending of the short is beautiful, so I won't disclose any details. One thing more-like much of Zagreb's output, this is a decidedly adult short which is most definitely not for children.

This is available online for viewing and is well worth seeking out. Most recommended.
