Madonna’s older brother Anthony Ciccone has died at the age of 66, the pop icon’s brother-in law has confirmed.
Joe Henry, a musician who is married to Madonna's sister Melanie Ciccone, said on Instagram on Saturday that Mr Ciccone had passed away the previous night, hailing him as “a complex character”.
"My brother-in-law, Anthony Gerard Ciccone, exited this earthly plane last evening," wrote Mr Henry. "I’ve known him since I was 15, in the spring of our lives in Michigan so many years now gone.
"Anthony was a complex character, and God knows we tangled in moments, as true brothers can. But I loved him, and understood him better than I was sometimes willing to let on. Trouble fades; and family remains – with hands reached across the table.
"I want to think the God your blessed mother (and mine) believed in has her there, waiting to receive you. At least for today,...

It's a sort of lopsided smile, almost like a child's-drawing version of what a grin is supposed to look like. Even more than the eyes and the jawline and that chin, which would later by framed by long Swingin' Sixties sideburns and covered by a ragged Seventies beard, it's the mouth of the kid in those early, black and white pictures that draws recognition. That's Eric Clapton's smile that the lad in the woolly jumper is sporting. And as he got older, even after he became famous and fans...

Today, the original Back To The Future (1985) is dated only by its Huey Lewis soundtrack and the choice of a De Lorean as a time machine. Except for a needless scene in which an obviously dubbed Michael J. Fox pretends he’s both Chuck Berry and Jimi Hendrix, there’s little to criticize, and much to admire. Happy New Year! It's been a tumultuous year for me and for many of us of a certain age. I lost a brother. The world lost a slew of pop culture -- Carrie Fisher, Alan Richman, Craig Sager, John Glenn -- and music icons -- Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen, George Michael, et al. One comfort for me was music and my rediscovery of vinyl. The warm, comforting sound of analog became my daily meditative fix. Quite literarily. Seeking out vinyl "nuggets" became a quest to help me deal with my own pain and depression. Chasing down albums that I owned thirty years, abadonded at the advent of those shiny new things called compact discs. Restorative analog power reigned o'er me. One of my chief caveats: I would not purchase anything on vinyl that I already owned on compact disc. Well, that rule didn't last long as I found comfort in...

And now for yet another documentary feature set in the world of art. Nope, we’re not following another globe-trotting photo-journalist. This is in the world of music, rock n’ roll, to be precise. We’re heading back over fifty years, when the Beatles ruled the pop charts. Seems that another quartet were becoming pop icons beside the “fab four”. As the years have passed, both groups have been whittled down to duos. I’m referring to The Who, but this film’s title doesn’t profile anybody at the footlights, smashing up their instruments. No, it’s about the unlikely pair behind the pandemonium. They might sound like an old vaudeville team to rival Bud and Lou, but those rock standards might never have become a part of our lives without Lambert & Stamp.

He also got around to defending his voice, which he said, critics have been giving a hard time about "since Day One."Here's Dylan on his signature "croaking," transcribed by the Los Angeles Times. The hallucinogenic visuals are good, but the intimate detail of this Jimi Hendrix story never quite rings true
‘How I helped to make Jimi Hendrix a rock’n’roll star’
A strong performance by André Benjamin, who captures the speech, stance and guitar-wielding mannerisms of Jimi Hendrix to a tee, can’t redeem 12 Years a Slave-screenwriter John Ridley’s oddly dour biopic, which struggles to capture the excitement of its subject’s breakthrough years. There’s more than a touch of Factory Girl’s staginess as Imogen Poots’s posh Linda Keith discovers Hendrix in New York and brings him to London, where he promptly shacks up with Kathy Etchingham (Hayley Atwell). The woozy soundtrack and jump-cut visuals add a touch of period hallucinogenics, but the intimate detail never rings true. British musician Jack Bruce, best known as the bass player and vocalist of the power blues trio Cream, died Saturday at his home, his family and publicist said. He was 71. Bruce was one of the top musicians of the late 1960s, when Cream played its unique psychedelic blues tunes to packed houses in England and the U.S. The band - widely cited as the original supergroup - were known for hits such as "I Feel Free" and "Sunshine of Your Love," which featured Eric Clapton's innovative guitar riffs, and Bruce's vocals and roaring bass, backed by Ginger Baker's explosive drumming.

The long-awaited Jimi Hendrix biopic All By My Side opens in cinemas today (October 24).
Andre '3000' Benjamin plays the iconic musician in the movie, which depicts Jimi's humble beginnings to becoming possibly the world's greatest guitarist.
This has inspired us to compile our own list of the greatest portrayals of musicians in rock 'n' roll biopics, often going above and beyond mere physical transformation:
1. Andy Serkis as Ian Dury
Andy Serkis was BAFTA nominated for his critically-acclaimed role - played to perfection - as charismatic '70s punk rock singer and songwriter Ian Dury in Mat Whitecross's 2010 biopic Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll.
To portray Dury's physical condition - he contracted polio as a child - Serkis lost two stone and built up the muscle mass on the right-hand side of his body so the other side was weaker.

Director: John Ridley; Screenwriter: John Ridley; Starring: André Benjamin, Hayley Atwell, Imogen Poots, Ruth Negga; Running time: 118 mins; Certificate: 15
Imagine a film portrait of Jimi Hendrix without the drugs that killed him at 27 and the rock that would make him immortal. Essentially, that's what John Ridley has done (following his Oscar-winning script for 12 Years a Slave), but he's writing and directing with his hands tied since he was unable to secure the rights to the music and also faces strong opposition from Hendrix's former girlfriend Kathy Etchingham.
By focussing on a year or so where Hendrix teetered on the cusp of fame, Ridley may have thought he could get away without featuring the hits he's remembered for and bets the rest of his chips on André '3000' Benjamin. It's a losing game. The Outkast frontman mooches about in the leading role and is, like, so chilled out man, he's almost comatose.

Former Outkast star-turned-actor André Benjamin completely convinces as guitar legend Jimi Hendrix in this classy biopic. Writer-director John Ridley (who wrote Steve McQueen's 12 Years A Slave) concentrates on the years before Hendrix became famous with Imogen Poots as Linda Keith, the girl who would introduce him to manager Chas Chandler, and Hayley Atwell as the musician's long-term girlfriend. Don't expect the hits but a poignant portrait that captures the spirit of the man.

The story goes that before Jimi Hendrix electrified audiences with his game-changing approach to rock 'n roll and blues, coupled with his flamboyant, jaw-dropping guitar technique, he was just another musician trying to pay the bills on the R&B circuit. Until one day, he was spotted by Linda Keith—girlfriend of someone you might have heard of named Keith Richards—at the Cheetah Club in New York, and putting Hendrix in touch with the right people, he was quickly launched to superstardom. It's a good story, with a rise-to-fame narrative, famous faces and, presumably, memorable songs. Yet, somehow, in Oscar-winning, "12 Years Slave" scribe John Ridley's film "All Is By My Side," which he wrote and directed, we get very little understanding of the artistry and ambition that would see one among the number of guitarists hustling for a dollar, become one of the most influential rock 'n roll musicians of all time.

In this exclusive clip from "Jimi: All Is By My Side," Jimi Hendrix gives the Brits a taste of his talent.
André Benjamin, aka André 3000, is in full rock star mode as he rocks out in this scene that's a recreation of the night Hendrix jammed with Cream for the first time. Eric Clapton (Danny McColgan) is quite skeptical of their musical guest, but after he watches Jimi's fancy fingering, he retreats backstage and mutters, "Is he really that f**king good?" to Chas Chandler (Andrew Buckley), Jimi's manager. In real life, Clapton has shared a variation of this story with various sources over the years, including The Guardian.
See for yourself just how crazy good Benjamin's portrayal of Hendrix is!
"Jimi: All Is By My Side" opens September 26.

Rapper Andre Benjamin worked obsessively on his startling portrayal of Jimi Hendrix in the new film Jimi: All Is By My Side, and he already has ideas about a potential biopic for his group Outkast. "It would be great to make an Outkast movie right now, but instead of really serious, make it a full comedy — like Kevin Hart would play Big Boi," he said of his rapping partner last night. And as himself? "We should cast somebody stupid — like Leonardo [DiCaprio]."

With the release date of Fantasia: Music Evolved a little under two months away, Harmonix has finally revealed the full tracklist for their colorful rhythm game. Published by Disney Interactive, Fantasia will launch exclusively on the Xbox One and Xbox 360 on October 20.
Speaking at Pax Prime this weekend, the team at Harmonix announced that tracks from Lady Gaga, Jimi Hendrix, The Flaming Lips and more will round out the final setlist. As one of the more musically-inclined developers in the business today, it makes sense that Harmonix would build a tracklist as eclectic as the one included here.

If you’re going to make a movie about Jimi Hendrix that can’t actually include his most popular music, you best capture the Jimi Hendrix experience—how it looked and felt to be in the same rooms and on the same stages with him. In Jimi: All Is By My Side, André Benjamin plays the magnetic 1960s rock god, and 12 Years a Slave screenwriter John Ridley, who wrote and directed, re-creates the psychedelic buzz around him during his days in London, just as the first jolts of his fame struck.

Smart scriptwriter John Ridley won an Oscar earlier this year for "12 Years a Slave," and now his sophomore directorial feature "Jimi: All Is By My Side," will open in the Us on September 24. Watch the stirring and, yes, sexy first trailer below. Ridley wrote and directed this Jimi Hendrix biopic starring Andre Benjamin (aka rapper/singer Andre 3000) as Hendrix and Imogen Poots as love interest Linda Keith, who met him in 1966 while dating Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. The film focuses on their relationship, Hendrix's rise in the London music scene before his death at age 27 in 1970, and the complications that arise when a new admirer (played by Hayley Atwell of "Captain America") enters the scene. "All Is By My Side" blends Ridley's interpretation of the story with archival footage of the era. XLrator Media is distributing with Open Road Films. Read our interview with Ridley on the film here.

When you think of a brilliant guitarist, who comes to mind? Brian May? Eric Clapton? Jimi Hendrix? Maybe Mark Knopfler?
Most people would agree wholeheartedly with you in this case, they are all superb guitarists, songwriters and all round amazing musicians. Some of their songs have defined the way people perceive the guitar as an instrument, never mind the song themselves being instantly memorable.
For example, while Hendrix was not the most technically adept player in the world (don’t get angry, he wasn’t), he had such a unique approach to the instrument that in the late 60s he redefined what it was to be a guitarist and a frontman. He did things no other player even dared, from playing with his teeth to hurling the instrument around and setting it on fire. To him, the guitar was more than a tool that made a sound, it was...

The heralded, award-winning 28-year-old franchise will begin to chronicle not only American masters but also “emerging American masters,” Michael Kantor said in a New York Times interview — industry speak for “targeting younger viewers.” The franchise will stop emphasizing important cultural figures important to the baby boom generation, Kantor told Nyt, which got first crack at the news. The series will redefine the word “masters” to include profiles of people in industry. Ditto science. That said, the series already has profiled Albert Einstein, as well as I.M. Pei, Billie Jean King, Walter Cronkite, etc. — in addition to more traditional subjects such as Arthur Miller, Georgia O’Keeffe, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Leonard Bernstein, Sidney Poitier, Judy Garland, John James Audubon, Bob Dylan, Ella Fitzgerald, Woody Guthrie, Jimi Hendrix, etc. Susan Lacy, who created American Masters in 1986, left to join HBO in September. And two other posters among the most popular (i.e. most liked or reblogged) were those posted in celebration of Philip Seymour Hoffman, including Chris Ware’s lovely 2007 design for The Savages, one of my favorite posters of last decade. So, if nothing else, Movie Poster of the Day has recorded the saddest losses of the year. (Not forgetting the adorable Swedish poster I posted for Shirley Temple which didn’t make the Top 20.)

In the same week -- really, the same 24 hours -- he won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for "12 Years a Slave," John Ridley flew to Austin to launch into work on the pilot for ABC's "American Crime." That meant, too, he could promote "Jimi: All Is Lost," to which he referred as his "child," his baby, a film fit for the South By Southwest film conference and is creeping toward theatrical release on May. "All Is By My Side" and "12 Years a Slave" both made their debut at the Toronto International Film Festival last year; but it's the former that he wrote, directed and executive produced. Touching on one year of rocker Jimi Hendrix's early career, Ridley also had to work-around the notoriously difficult Hendrix estate, which denied the film any usage of Hendrix's recorded work, and long timeline conversations with people producing the film. I thought that...

Imogen Poots‘s face is everywhere this year. She was recently seen in That Awkward Moment, has Need for Speed opening this weekend, Filth hits the states this summer, and maybe we’ll be lucky enough to see her in Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups before 2015. Another movie Poots co-stars in this year is writer-director John Ridley‘s Jimi: All Is by My Side. She plays the incredibly suave Linda Keith, a supporter and close friend of Jimi Hendrix (André Benjamin) in the film. Speaking with Poots at SXSW this week, I learned she clearly admires Ridley’s strict focus on their relationship as well. She spoke fondly of Jimi: All Is by My Side and, of course, a terrific French bakery in Los Angeles. Our conversation touched on plenty of other relevant subjects, too. If you’re curious about how beautiful Charlestown, West Virginia, really is, for example, read...

After being acquired by Open Road out of the 2013 Toronto Film Festival, we haven't heard much about recent Oscar winner screenwriter John Ridley's (12 Years a Slave) All is By My Side, which takes a look at the early years of Jimi Hendrix's life with Andre Benjamin starring as the iconic musician. Today, however, we get a first look at the film in the following clip, the first of which features Benjamin alongside Imogen Poots as Linda Keith, then girlfriend of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. Hayley Atwell, Ruth Negga, Adrian Lester and Burn Gorman. Check out the clips below. sb id="892823" height="343" width="610" Jimmy James, an unknown backup guitarist, left New York City for London, England in 1966. A year later he returned as Jimi Hendrix. All Is By My Side brings authenticity and poignancy to the story of the man behind the legend, and of the people who loved and inspired him.
