We survive through our children.
dbdumonteil27 January 2005
The eighties brought in France another way of making movies:first a relatively short version which was shown in the theaters, then a miniseries which was broadcast on TV.Examples:"Lelouch's "les uns et les autres" Hossein's "les miserables" Bolognini's (co-production with Italy)"la dame aux camelias" "Comencini's "cuore" (idem) .... and Robert Enrico's "Au nom de tous les miens"

"Au nom de tous les miens exists in two versions. You have got to bear in mind that here it's a "reader's digest " form ( 2h25)!Think that the miniseries lasts 8 hours! With "Cuore" ,it's the best of the lot which includes plenty of other films in two versions.Robert Enrico ,whose best film remains his wonderful "les aventuriers" (1967) ,had already tackled WW2 with "le vieux fusil" which ,although praised to the skies at the time and a Cesar winner ,sufferred from a far-fetched screenplay full of tricks a la Feuillade, the old master of the French silent era.

There's not such a problem with Martin Gray's story. His unbelievable true odyssey is one of the most harrowing and one of the most awesome of the whole twentieth century, and he will go down in history,as Anne Frank did.His life is so eventful through the sufferings ,the pain and the small joys -the scene when he gives cakes to a poor little girl-that it resembles a novel. My Jewish friends have always told me that they believe in survival ,not in a paradise after death, but through their children. That's what's Martin keeps on repeating ,that's why he gets over every time fate strikes ,that's why he wrote his book, that's why we almost never see him cry (except for the scene in his aunt's house in NYC)

Of course ,the theatrically released version leaves something to be desired,so I urge everybody to see the long version before...if he can.

Strong and thought-provoking WWII drama in which a Polish Jew suffers lots of distresses and atrocities
ma-cortes28 June 2014
Overwhelming as well as devastating portrayal of survival against Nazi villains and all irrational obstacles . The true story of Martin Gray (Jacques Penot as young boy and Michael York as mature man) , a Polish survivor of the holocaust, from how he survived the German invasion , how got captured . He is sent to a concentration camp , there victims were brought to the camp in unventilated transports . Thus , when the incoming transports , mostly Jews , SS soldiers made instant decisions , those who were fit to labors were sent into the camp , others including the children , were dispatched immediately to the gas chambers where lots of Jews were executed . And all but a handful were gassed after arrival , the gas chambers could accommodate hundred prisoners at one time , most of their corpses were burned in open pits . He subsequently escaped and he fought back with the rebels, to his life in the Soviet army as a KGB agent, and the building of his new life in North America , there he marries a beautiful woman (Brigitte Fossey) but again takes place astonishing tragedies .

This is an emotionally tale and very decent drama about a Jew and his family from uprising until terrible ending in the Warsaw ghetto . Roberto Enrico correctly directs a spellbinding portrait about the holocaust with intense drama , emotion and spectacular as well as sad scenes . A splendid French all-star-cast gives magnificent acting in real-life characters . The picture is based on real events , these are the followings : It deals with ¨Varsovia rebellion¨ and ¨Death Camps¨ such as Sobibór , Chelmno , Majanek , Belzec and Treblinka were four large death camps in the Lublin district of Poland transformed into extermination centers to implement the policy of genocide thought at the Wannsee Conference . In 1939, after the invasion of Poland, Reinhard Heydrich chief of Gestapo began to place all Polish Jews in ghettos, where they could slowly die of hunger and disease. The campaign was to be administered by the Waffen-SS the party's military formations that fought as integral units in the armed forces . The Warsaw ghetto was the largest of these segregated areas established by the Nazis in Poland. In 1940 Heydrich, using the excuse that the spread of typhus had to be contained, set up a special section 11 miles in circumference enclosed by a brick wall 10 feet high . The cost was paid by the Judenrat , the Jewish Council of twenty-four-members, which was in charge of Jewish affairs inside the ghetto . The daily struggle against hunger and disease is aggravated by the German demands for "deportations to the east" that many begin to suspect are camouflaged mass murders . Later on , there takes place the upheaval by a handful of fighters until the final destruction . The Nazi authorities began intensified measure on July 22, 1942. As a memorial to Heydrich, Heirich Himmler ordered all Jews except those already in concentration camps to be deported .The ghetto and all labor camps would then be destroyed. Mass deportations to the gas chambers of Treblinka began. In two months 300.000 Jews were eliminated. The Judenrat was ordered to deliver 6.000 Jews daily for deportation. Each day thousands were driven by guards through the gates.Young Zionists, pioneers training to go to Palestine, mobilized first to be followed by members of the Polish workers party . On July 28, 1942, the Jewish Combat organization consisting about 1.000 men and boys was formed. All resolved to kill as many of their tormentors as they could before they died. The Jews fighting from rooftops, cellars, and attics,Poles outside the ghetto now began to send in more revolvers, grenades, and dynamite. In 1943 the guerrillas divided into twenty-two groups built an intricate network underground cellars and tunnels ,linked with command posts .

The motion picture was stunningly directed by Robert Enrico . He was a good professional who shot interesting films as ¨Jailsbird vacation¨ , ¨Rum Runners¨, ¨The wise guys¨ ¨The old fusil¨ and of course his masterpiece ¨The adventurers¨ . Rating : 7,5 , better than average. The film will appeal to French cinema lovers

Well done, but tough to watch
HotToastyRag23 January 2023
This very heavy miniseries chronicles Martin Gray's memoir, and while it's very well put together, it's pretty tough to watch. This isn't one of those "let's remember the Holocaust" movies that's inspiring because we know everyone makes it out alive. In fact, in the beginning of the series, the audience is shown that, in fact, Martin's loving wife and children have been killed in a terrible fire. He weeps and places a gun to his head, then decides to put his life story into a tape recorder first. The rest of the miniseries is a flashback. I told you it's heavy.

If you're a Michael York fan and appreciate whenever he was given a heavy dramatic role to sink his teeth into, you might want to try this one. He plays the adult Martin, and you might be surprised and disappointed when the flashback uses another actor, Jacques Penot, as the main Martin in the flashbacks who lives through the Holocaust. However, there's a very cute twist (the only cute part of this entire movie): Michael also plays his own father during the WWII sections. So fear not, we'll see (and hear, since he narrates it) a lot of him.

You might be expecting it, but you might not be able to imagine it, there's a lot of violence in this miniseries. With all these awful, unspeakable horrors put into one man's memoir, it's really a wonder how he made it out alive. This really isn't an enjoyable story to watch. It's only for those who appreciate getting immersed in this time period, and for those who can stomach a lot of atrocities.

Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to violence, I wouldn't let my kids watch it.

A true story about surviving the WWII antisemitic holocaust.
babylon_5fan19 October 2003
I was 17, and living in France when this movie was made, and even then, I found it very inspirational and sad at the same time. I never forgot it. Even today, I still remember the face of the actor who played young Martin Gray, and that was 20 years ago. This movie had an impact on me and it would be a treasure to own, as much as Schindler's List.

Michael York plays a middle-aged holocaust survivor who tapes his account of how he used his survival instincts as a young teenager to escape his possible fate. Unfortunately, his pain didn't end there.

This movie demonstrates the incredible strength of the human spirit, the desire to survive, and how one can never give up, no matter what.

Feels Like a 1983 Made For TV Movie
chrissso2 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Your impression of this film will be greatly influenced by the version you watched. I watched 374 minute mini-series, as the short version (145 minutes) is not to be found. So my first impression is this film is way, way, way too long!

More so this film feels like a 1983 MFTV film. It has the obligatory star (Michael York) who we all like and the supporting cast of unknowns. And like most MFTV films it is pretty much start to finish bad acting (overdramatic) and bad directing. It is after all 1983! Yet there is merit to this film. First off it tells a fascinating and heroic tale of a holocaust survivor. It is a story of perseverance and prosperity under the worst conditions.

Specifically it tells the story of Martin Grey (AKA Mieczysław Grajewski) a Polish Jew that was sent to a Nazis Death Camp (Treblinka) ... escaped that camp ... joined The Russian or Red Army ... became an NKVD Lieutenant searching for Nazis in Poland and then participated in the Battle of Berlin and fall of the Nazis empire? Not many can tell a similar story.

Secondly the film was ambitious with great sets, scenes, props and location work.

This film deserves to be released on DVD here in the USA as it is a story that should be remembered. Yes it will need to be edited down to about 4.5 hours and it will need to be cleaned up in many places but this film is deserves to be remembered. Martin Gray's story taken at face value (he has detractors) is most compelling.

This film is excellent viewing
jane-19719 January 2005
I saw this film during the 80's on three separate VHS video tapes and I watched it over and over until it went out of circulation. I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to get a copy for the last decade and I hope that now, during the Anniversary year, that it has been re-released. I have no hesitation in recommending this film for viewing and it deserves the "10" that I rated it. Although a French film Michael York is an English actor and the accents and language are easy to understand. The film is a must to see and anyone interested in this period in history must definitely see it. The story is very sad and is a reminder of a period in history that must never be forgotten and never repeated.

Does anyone have a copy or know where I can buy one?

Life affirming movie, inspirational
karenthomas6119 June 2011
I hate to use those clichés because people say them so often about movies. I saw this movie as a mini-series on a commercial cable station before DVR. Even with commercials, I watched it back to back one long afternoon and found it riveting. I heat that there is an abridged theatrical release, but I strongly recommend the full mini series. I suggest that when a person watches this mini-series, they should turn off their phone and all other distractions. Please pay close attention to this story, because it is worth it. Don't spoil this movie by reading about the protagonist's real life first. Watch to the very end and it will speak to you.

The message is powerful and important at any time. However, in these harsh times, it particularly resonates.

Best 2nd World War Film ever!!!
iaintwoeyes6 February 1999
Although I saw this film in 1980' s I was been moved by it so much I can still remember most of it today. The plot is brilliant as is the acting. I just wish I could get my hands on a copy of the video (VHS). I have been looking for over three years for the English version of the video with no success.

Almost unbelievable tale of the drive to survive
hagecom4 May 2001
Warning: Spoilers
For those I loved (Au nom de tous les miens)is the remarkable life story of Martin Gray, a young Polish Jew, who has to skip the innocent days of his youth and has to grow up early to cope with the horrors of WWII. As a jew Martin and his family are forced to move to the ghetto. Although he is still very young, his youth helps him to adapt to the situation easier. He leads a group of smugglers that help him to get bread into the ghetto. The ghetto is finally emptied and he himself is transported to a concentration camp, from which he manages to escape by shear determination to survive. He joins the partisans and later the red army. After the war he settles in America and becomes a wealthy antique salesman. He meets a Dutch woman and moves to France, has two children and then fate strikes again. His wife and children die in a forest fire. This is the story he recorded after all that happened. He recorded it for those he loved. And lost.

dkbrooks-137-68854015 August 2018
I watched this whilst off school with an illness in 1983 in three Betamax tapes, for some reason my father was also at home whilst I was at home. We watched the three tapes together and it has left a life long impression on my sole. A truley remarkable and underrated film.

now that here kids are being killed, i am no kid anymore! Warning: Spoilers
i have watched stuff like this, e.g. holocaust and some b/w movies in the 70s and 80s, like "der fall Gleiwitz". i can remember one scene of this movie, the protagonist trying to hide from the German SS in a hole under a restroom. i did not read the novel, but if i have some spare time, i will do so. As far as the title is concerned, martin gray was arguing with his parents because he put his life at stake to help others in the Warsaw ghetto. i was reading the documentary "the yellow star" in the 70s and i remember there was a young boy being asked, what he wanted to be, and he replied:"a dog, because the German guards like dogs". i thought "the poor boy" but what could i do? and so just the protagonist Martin G. has to deal with a lost childhood, as he struggles for survival of his family and others since the Nazis were occupying Poland. there is just one little reference that this is not a Hollywood movie, as the smugglers leave two bags of food in front of the "Orphelinat Juif"(=Jewish orphan's home). What it makes worth watching, is the language and the history of people who really existed and suffered. I for my part can be more neutral since i was born in the 60s. even if someone should read this who lost family members in this time wants to ask questions or visit some important places. i was in England and later traveling to Auschwitz in the 90s and i just don't feel like arguing with people who don't like Germans because of world war 2. I had just the idea of looking for some old movies on youtube so I suddenly remembered this. So, i do not arrogate to judge the behavior of people whose country was occupied by the Germans. What the movie and the author tells us is that the sacrifice of the people who fought for their freedom must not be forgotten. this movie deserves for sure, more reviews than it got yet, as it is not based on figments but on true facts. if you like it, you will also like "hitlerjunge Salomon", "Holocaust", "Jeder Stirbt Für Sich Allein", "Sansibar Oder Der Letzte Grund", or "swing kids".
