Not necessarily something you would want to try yourself

Warning: Spoilers
I found this documentary interesting. Thought of 2 things first up. One was sadomasochism, which is a well know subculture, if you can call it that, and then the Australian performance artist Stelarc. He does similar things like the guy in these rituals, even going step further. Body modification is still a thing in 2023, and has probably grown considerably. Alternative scene is fairly large, and people do these things. Is it self mutilation? I guess people are drawn towards these pretty extreme behaviours for different reasons. Fakir who is the central character being studied in this doc, states it is spiritual, and believes he is drawn to these rituals from previous lives. He believes in reincarnation. Fakir laughs himself, and states his real aim is to "meet his maker". It seems bizarre, but as an atheist it would do to me. I found the doc interesting and well worth watching, as it is a bit of a curiosity piece. Mentions the endorphins and enkephalins, which reminded me, as I knew a sadomasochist at one time lol. It is interesting as it discusses ancient cultures and tribes, who did and still perform these rituals. Again definitely a spectator sport in my view, but interesting all the same.

Fascinating documentary explores alternative cultures within our society
matthewlcorey24 March 2021
Far from being a seamy exploitation flick, this fascinating documentary is likely to alter the way you view such taboo behavior as sadomasochistic sex. The film focuses on the research of anthropologist Charles Gatewood, who explores alternative cultures within our society from bondage clubs to the rituals of modern primitives like Fakir Musafar. Startling not just for its unique footage, but also for the enlightening interviews and analysis it provides.
