Sex & Nudity

  • We see a poster of a partially naked woman near a man's bed.
  • A man is shown with a sculpture of a naked woman. This is easy to miss and it is not so obvious.
  • A man's buttocks are shown.
  • No sex scenes in this movie. Plenty of sexual banter.

Violence & Gore

  • A group of American soldiers watch a fellow soldier attempt to rape a village girl. A different American soldier pulls the soldier off of her. No nudity.
  • Overall this is a very violent movie, not just graphic violence but graphic in tone as well.
  • American soldiers eventually start fighting each other, due to their frustration. One soldier grabs a knife and attempts to kill another soldier, but his men tells him to calm down.
  • An American soldier's corpse is seen pinned to a tree with a moderate amount of blood visible.
  • An American soldier holds a gun to a Vietnamese girl's head in front of her family, but another soldier punches him in the face and the two fight until a third soldier breaks them up. Both bleed.
  • A man is blinded by shrapnel and covers his face screaming before a Vietnamese soldier comes up and unloads a gun on him.
  • A man is wounded by an explosion nearby, another man cuts into him with a knife to rip the shrapnel out.
  • Two men are blown to pieces after an airstrike is called on them.
  • A man is shot a couple times, and he's seen attempting to stuff what look like his intestines back in his body briefly.
  • The film implies that American troops raped villagers during a massacre.
  • A man is shot in the lungs and has trouble breathing while oozing blood. It is implied that a man is piecing his internals back in. Scene isn't graphic.
  • A man runs away and another man shoots him from a distance, killing him.
  • A brief scene of taking wounded men back to an Aid zone, though it is a short scene there are many sitings of wounded men, dead mutilated bodies, and medic is covered in blood.
  • An unarmed Vietnamese woman is shot in the head at close range as her husband and daughter look on in horror; we see blood spray from the wound, very graphic.
  • A Vietnamese soldier is taunted before having his head bashed in with a rifle butt. This is implied and offscreen and quite unrealistic as only quiet thuds heard. Some blood sprays onto the perpetrator's face, but this is not graphic. The whole scene is intense, disturbing, and horrifying however.
  • One soldier loses a hand when another soldier accidentally throws a grenade in his direction (some blood is shown). Two men are in a Vietnamese bunker when it explodes, and one emerges with no arms.
  • One soldier has his leg blown off by a booby trap (the injury is not shown).
  • In one battle scene, a soldier runs away from his foxhole, but runs into a tree and is then bayoneted by a Vietnamese soldier.
  • A group of Americans soldiers stand laughing around an unseen girl, while she screams and cries, implying gang-rape.

Profanity

  • 159 f-words.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Cigarette smoking is pervasive throughout the entire film.
  • Wounded men are given morphine to ease their suffering.
  • A soldier steals a case of beer.
  • A soldier introduces another to Marijuana by passing him a Marijuana cigarette.
  • A group of soldiers smoke Marijuana at their base camp. The methods of smoking are a pipe, a gas mask, a joint, and a Remington rifle, which a man blows smoke through the chamber into another man's mouth.
  • A group of soldiers drink beer, whiskey (referred to as "Kentucky Windage"), and Southern Comfort during a poker game.
  • Soldiers smoke Marijuana from a pipe in their barracks.
  • A Sgt. is shown drinking straight out of a bottle of Jack Daniels. He is visibly intoxicated, and takes a hit from a Marijuana pipe.
  • A soldier smokes a Marijuana joint in the jungle.
  • A soldier takes a bag of heroin out of the clothing of a dead Vietnamese soldier and smiles happily.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • American troops murder and rape a village of old people and very young kids. They gangrape young children and torture the old folks. It is a long scene. After killing and raping, they decide to burn the village (along with all food and supplies) and leave.
  • This film has a dark and graphic undertone, and most of the violence is realistic to things that have happened in Vietnam.
  • A scene in which a Vietnamese villager is being tortured by soldiers, especially the conclusion, may be very disturbing to many viewers
  • One theme of the film is that of some of the soldiers who have been there for as short as two weeks going insane with bloodlust and mental visions.
  • The implied rape of a young Vietnamese girl is disturbing.
