A fun cartoon
SonicStuart12 June 2004
Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers was a fun cartoon and it was one of my favorites that was on the Disney Afternoon along with Darkwing Duck, Bonkers, DuckTales, Tale Spin, Mighty Ducks, Gargoyles, Timon and Pumbaa and Quack Pack. Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers would be solving improbable mysteries and crimes in every fun filled episode! I always liked Dale because he is so goofy and nuts like I am. I remember that this was one of the shows that I would sometimes watch with my older sister. This show came out a year after I was born. This is another good cartoon that brings back so much good memories of my childhood. It's too bad now a days Disney has crappy cartoons on the air that are just unoriginal and suck! But overall great cartoon.

Why don't Disney ever show this wonderful series anymore?
TheLittleSongbird16 October 2009
This is one of my favourite Disney cartoons along with Darkwing Duck, Talespin and Ducktales, and I am flabbergasted that Disney don't show this anymore. everything about it is amazing, though if I had a minor criticism I just wished it lasted longer. The animation is superb, the character movements are sharp, and the colours fluid and solid-looking. The theme tune is delightfully catchy, and never fails to make me want to sing along. And what about the characters? A real delight. Chipand Dale are hilarious, with their fast talking and irresistible personalities, and Gadget and Monteroy Jack are great characters that add a lot to the show. And where would we be without the villains? My favourites were FatCat and Professor Nimmel. The voice acting from Corey Burton, Tress MacNeille and Jim Cummings is of high calibre, the stories are outstanding and there are plenty of laugh-out-loud-funny moments. All in all, I just wish it lasted longer, otherwise brilliant and a must-see! 9/10 Bethany Cox

Rodents To The Rescue!
a34trgv123 May 2022
Chip and Dale were originally a couple of funny chipmunks that messed around with Donald Duck or Pluto. In the 80s though, these 2 chipmunks were made the stars of a detective adventure show alongside 2 mice and a fly. Together they form the Rescue Rangers, whose sole purpose is to help animals in need. The show has been hailed as one of the best animated shows in Disney TV's library and I can certainly see why, even if I find a couple elements to not hold up. From a great sense of adventure, likable characters and really good animation, it's really fascinating that this show still holds up after 34 years.

Created by Tad Stones and Alan Zaslove, this show follows the adventures of a team of do-gooders who help animals in need. Each episode follows the formula of being a minimovie. Each episode starts with the rangers getting wind of the case, followed by their tried and true efforts to solve the case and the episode wrapping in a fun and exciting climax. What keeps this formula from getting old is the the execution of each episode. Every episode finds unique ways to tell its story by giving one of the main characters an arch to overcome, incorporates some really clever world building or having genuinely funny jokes and gags. Episodes like The Last Leprechaun, Throw Mummy Off The Train, and It's A Bird, It's Insane, It's Dale are great examples of the show having clever world building, funny jokes and being character focused. The writing of this show is really good and is made stronger by its wonderful cast of characters.

The characters are all really likable and have unique personalities that bounce off each other really well. Starting with our titular heroes, Chip and Dale maintain their clashing personalities from the shorts and yet they still care for one another (this show says they're best friends but in the shorts and all other appearances they're actually brothers). Chip is the brave, smart, and determined leader of the rangers with him coming up with plans and relying on the support of his team. Dale is the funny, carefreee comic relief who has his moments of genius but generally likes having more fun than Chip. Gadget Hackwrench is the s smart, spunky and caring inventor and mechanic who helps her teammates in the best ways she can. Chip and Dale sometimes fight for her affection and that's one element that doesn't hold up today. Chip and Dale's relationship with Gadget is at it's best when they're simply friends with her. Monterey Jack (Monty for short) is the team's adventure loving muscle who has a very strong fixation with cheese. While this habit is a problem for him, it does provide some funny gags whenever he gets a whiff of any kind of cheese. Then there's Zipper, the little fly and Monty's best friend. Zipper may be small, but he's really brave, noble and helpful. Together they form a great team that's willing to help others in need for no other reason other than it's the right thing to do.

The Rescue Rangers face a number of enemies throughout the show who want nothing more than to enact their evil intentions. Starting with their most formidable and the best villain in the show is Fat Cat. Fat Cat is basically a classic Disney villain on the small screen. He's charismatic, he's smart, he's cunning and he keeps his dimwitted lackies under his thumb. Fat Cat relishes in being an evil kingpin and every episode he's in is a treat. Another recurring antagonist is Professor Norton Nimnul, a scientist who seeks to cause chaos, but his inventions more often than not back fire on him. Other notable antagonists include Lawhinie, a sinister mouse who's bares a striking resemblance to Gadget, Rat Capone, a gangster rat who has the personality of his namesake, Al Capone, Winifred, a modern witch who flies a magic vacuum cleaner, and Sewernose de Bergerac, an alligator who's obsessed with the theater and plays the role of the villain (both on and off the stage).

Bringing these characters to life are the outstanding voice actors directed by Bryce Malek and voice direction legend Andrea Romano. Tress MacNeillie and Corey Burton did an excellent job voicing Chip and Dale, especially with their voices sped up to give them a squeaky manner of speaking (not unlike Alvin & The Chipmunks). Chip sounds brave and determined while Dale sounds carefree and lively. Tress and Corey also did great jobs voicing Gadget and Zipper with the former sounding really knowledgeable and giddy whenever she tests a new invention and the later sounding well meaning, friendly and brave. The MVP of the show though is the man, the myth, the legend himself Jim Cummings. While Peter Cullen did a great job voicing Monty for the first season and some of Season 2, the transition between him and Jim is unnoticable as Monty maintains his gruff Australian accent and makes him sound caring and brave. Jim also did a fabulous job voicing Fat Cat, Professor Nimnul, Rat Capone and Baby Thaddeous among other villains, making them all sound distinct from one another and varying shades of sinster. Other actors that did really good work on the show include Rob Paulsen, Debrorah Walley, Frank Welker, Gregg Berger, Carol Channing, Alan Oppenheimer and Peter Schrum. The late-great Mel Blanc gave one of his final performances before his death as Billy The Squid in Piratsy Under the Sea (albeit uncredited). That's just a cool trivia I thought I'd include in this review because Mel is such a legend.

Visually, the show holds up very well given that the animation was done by hand as opposed to computers like today. The character designs are really appealing with the characters having round heads, big expressive eyes, and fitting attire. I especially like how Fat Cat twirls his whiskers like a mustache, such a nice cherry on top of an already great villain. The character animation flows naturally as if they would in an action adventure show. Speaking of action, that's where the animation truly shines, with tight camera shots, intense action, and big set pieces. The backgrounds also look really detailed and lived in as we visit different locations in the show. The Rescue Rangers headquarters feels like a nice home, the city they reside in feels alive, the ocean feels calm yet unpredictable and the exotic locations look like amazing tourist attractions. The animation of the show holds up so well and it makes me want to go to the places the rangers go.

There's an elephant in the room that needs to be addressed in this review: the depictions of Chinese and Polynisian cultures in the show. Obviously it was not the creator's intention to offend or disrespect Chinese or Polynisian cultures and while they're not egregiously offensive, they still don't do these cultures justice. The second part of the 2 hour pilot, Song of The Night and Dale, and Puffed Rangers have antagonistic Chinese characters who, while they don't speak in the stereotypical broken English, they do have stereotypical Chinese names and are clearly not voiced by Chinese actors. Gadget Goes Hawaiian reinforces the stereotype that Polynisian natives are easily fooled and also have stereotypical names. These questionable depictions of these cultures definitely wouldn't fly today but I'm glad Disney didn't try to bury these episodes and instead put unskippable warnings in front of them on Disney+.

Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers is a good show that's earned it's cult status among Disney fans. It's got strong writing, really funny gags, well crafted animation, a colorful cast of characters and outstanding vocal performances. It has some moments that don't hold up, but those moments can and have been learned from in the past 34 years since this show came out. If you have Disney+, I highly recommend giving this show a watch, especially if you're into funny adventure shows.

Clever, well-developed, and subtly deep
ajolipa21 January 2005
In brief, this is a cartoon show about a gang of animals--two chipmunks, two mice, and a common housefly--who live together in a tree and solve crimes and have various adventures together. But it's so much better than it sounds from that simple description. The writing is witty with sharp, consistent characterizations, both of the Rescue Rangers themselves and of all the various villains and minor characters. The background music is catchy and the plots are inventive, random, silly and at the same time serious, without being preachy or heavy-handed in giving "morals" at all.

As for the basics of the show, the Rescue Rangers are composed of Chip--intelligent and determined with a streak of mischief that only occasionally surfaces; Dale--goofy and often trying to prove himself, and also to bring out Chip's goofy side; Monterey Jack--worldly and generally in control of the situation, except of course when it comes to cheese; Gadget--brilliant and absent-minded and sometimes startlingly wise; and Zipper--plucky and enthusiastic and loyal. But all of that can be found in any summary of the show; it doesn't capture what is so great about the show. None of the characters are even close to one-dimensional, and their interactions are complex, witty and fascinating, and can't even be summarized briefly.

Just as interesting are the "bad guys"--the main recurring ones are Fat Cat and his gang, and Professor Nimnul, a self-proclaimed unappreciated genius. The villains are witty, entertaining, ironic, outrageous, and just plain funny. And in general the show avoids the issue of "good vs. evil" directly; the plots typically revolve around the Rescue Rangers thwarting some scheme of a villain to gain power or wealth in unlawful ways (although some episodes don't even have an identifiable villain), but you're not made to hate the villains at all, only to disapprove of their selfishness or greed. In terms of subtle moral messages, I would say that this show shows (not preaches) the value of teamwork, the idea that everyone deserves help, and that selfishness and greed will get you nowhere in the end.

But the moral messages are not the main reason to watch this show, although they're important to the charm of the show. I started watching it when I was about four, and it's stuck with me throughout my life, becoming a central part of our family culture even when we go years without actually watching an episode. If a show can be judged by how often it gets quoted or referenced in everyday life, then Rescue Rangers has been the best and most important show in my life. So many of the lines and references have worked their way into my regular vocabulary, lines that are witty or clever or insightful or just plain funny. So often my dad and I find ourselves making analogies to RR episodes while having serious discussions. On the surface the plots may seem entertaining but not "deep" in a traditional dramatic sense, but believe me, the wit of the plots and characters and dialogue seeps into your thoughts in ways that will surprise you. It's fun and entertaining, and in a subtle way, very meaningful.

Overall, I wouldn't be who I am now without this show. I find that it's written with a depth of cleverness, references, wit, and character development that isn't quite matched in any of the other Disney Afternoon shows (with Gummi Bears coming closest). It's funny, entertaining, and deep, and I'd recommend it to anyone of any age who's willing not to be cynical about watching a show about crime-solving rodents. It's more than worth it.

"Sometimes, some crimes..."
sethn17229 August 2006
Disney reigns the animated television series king in 1989 with "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers," a cartoon about Chip, Dale, Gadget, Monterey Jack, and Zipper, all having lots of fearless adventures and having lots of fun!!!!!

They all live in a tree, ala the Keebler elves, and they have things like a big screen TV with Christmas Lights and a round sofa, an "R/R" flag, a tire/Tinker Toy slide, dominoes for stairs, a mailbox garage, a kitchen, and just about everything that you could find in their home/ headquarters!!!!!

As a child of the early 90s, I've watched this on the Disney Afternoon, and played the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) game from Capcom, like what everyone else always did back in the day!!!!! Man, both were so much fun! I wish times like this were here again! Oh well; guess I'll have to invest in a time machine!!!!! LOL

"Rescue Rangers" is a wonderful show; fun for the whole family!!!!!

10 stars!

Great children's TV show
TheTitaniumDragon1 December 2006
Unlike most of the modern, horrible cartoons people put out for children these days, Chip n' Dale's Rescue Rangers is a genuinely good show. Like much of the older Disney stuff, it is actually watchable by adults, and is very cute. The five main characters all have interesting interactions, and the stories are well done. All of the characters have depth of personality, and Gadget, far from being arm-candy, is one very independent. Unlike almost every other show, the independent female character never ends up with one of the other characters and all five characters remain single.

It is an excellently done show, and is great for children but still enjoyable for adults. I gave it a 10/10, as it is one of the greatest shows, particularly animated shows, of all time.

Crazy adventures and fast-paced.
OllieSuave-00728 December 2016
I would always remember this cartoon as immediately following "Ducktales" on the Disney Afternoon. This one was a step down from "Ducktales" in my opinion, but it has its fun moments with its crazy adventures and fast-paced story-lines. Here, Disney's favorite chipmunks, Chip 'n' Dale are take on the roles of leaders of a crime-fighting team, which also consists of two mice, Gadget Hackwrench and Monterey Jack (and his pet fly, Zipper).

While the cartoon can be entertaining at times, the characters were mostly so-so in my opinion. I like the free-spirited Dale, but Chip's goodie-twoshoe and bossy personality annoys me. And, what's worse, Gadget and Monterey Jack side with Chip most of the time. So, I thought the crime-fighting group was a little lop-sided in rapport.

Aside from that, it's not a bad cartoon - still good fun with the younger ones and miles better than today's so-called Disney shows.

The Mother Of All Cartoons
guerillagorilla31 May 2005
Everybody has a series of some sort that started them on a path of what they come to expect from nearly everything else in the genre proceeding it, whether it be a "Batman", a "Star Wars", or more aptly in my case, "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers". It was released in '89 to be one of 4 original series on a new 2-hour block of cartoon TV known as the Disney Afternoon. Perfect timing for me, what being around 7 years old. Upon first seeing it I became enthralled. It seems that everyone also has a character whom they feel they can identify with in some degree. I remember being a somewhat scatterbrained kid...goofy, funny, if even also bucktoothed. And I want(ed) a shirt like Dale's pretty bad.

Over the years, I've found that, even having evolved into supposed adulthood, good cartoons are hard to come by and stay with. When I saw the series as a little kid, there was no way I could've pointed out all the little nagging errors in it, like sometimes slippery animation, thoroughly worn music and tired sound effects. Rather, they were counter-balanced with interest by the intriguing concept of a band of tree-residing rodents out to further the cause of justice, no matter how seemingly small the battle.

Just how could the police solve crimes like widespread cheese disappearances, mysterious weather patterns or potential citywide destruction...from a record player? Well, they can't. They don't have the necessary perspective. They aren't 2 and a half inches tall. Naw, these cases are best left for Chip, Dale, Gadget, Monterey Jack and his winged pal, Zipper. Of course, not every team is a perfect unit. Chip might over-analyze a case, leading to missing out on an opportunity to act. Gadget's latest gadget is liable to act in an un-anticipated way. Monty's next rush to action might get the gang in a bit of a pinch. And Dale...well, a "creative" solution is a creative solution, after all. Might just not work, though.

So then, why are the chronicles of diminutive crime-fighters so awesomely excellent? I find that, among many reasons, there don't seem to be many cartoons that can practice what they preach without doing just that. Teamwork, detective work, creativity and tolerance can be extolled without preaching, and to boot, while having fun! Cunning and eccentric baddies like the aptly named Fat Cat don't stand a chance against this well-oiled machine...no matter how well-thought out a devious star constellation rouse is.

It's really quite amazing how Disney's bargain-basement cartoon of the bunch came to be one of the most well-received of them. Of other Disney Afternoon favorites like "Duck Tales", "TaleSpin", and "Darkwing Duck", this is the least expensive to produce, and as aforementioned, my favorite. It just goes to show that a mix of the old-fashioned Disney magic and awesome character interactions make the show over "special effects". About 16 years after the fact, I find this show has not aged, despite my more discriminating tastes, and has remained my all-time favorite cartoon series. Whenever my inner child wells to the surface, I still pop in a long-ago-recorded VHS episode. And dare I say, I hold the series in such high regard that if the latest and greatest can't stack up to the Rescue Rangers, it's just not old-fashioned enough.

"Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers" gets a well-earned 10 of 10 stars.

Deserves Better
colinsrestinn27 March 2007
This is one of the best DVDs I've ever bought, this is a beauty that hasn't been given the credit it deserves. I was lucky to get it at all! There've been various TV series with the same number of episodes as this and most of them got their own cinema films and/or extra series, yet all this got was a small fan-base. What was it that drove people away, especially since Thunderbirds has been popular for so long and they both share the same basic plot-line? They just don't make them like this anymore, it's all fancy 3D stuff now and that can often make the animation look worse, less realistic in various ways. The series itself is brilliant, but the homage is just too low.

Good old 2D animation. How are you missing now
seleona18 February 2021
Chip and Dale is, for me, the best Disney animated series of those years, although others are not far behind it. Nice design, pleasant memories. Although my childhood was difficult due to rather serious health problems, this work of art always made me forget about any pain only with its intro plunging me into a feeling of joy. It's a pity that not all episodes were available to me then.

There are many memorable, vivid characters in the cartoon. Just look at only one Gadget. Brilliant artists. They made her beautiful in mind and character, as well as in appearance. For all these parameters, she is almost the perfect girl. Chip and Dale are perhaps the funniest two friends duo I've met in a cartoon. When I see a cheese, I still remember Monty. For some time in childhood, flies did not seem disgusting to me precisely because of Zipper. Although this is perhaps a drawback :)

I highly recommend watching it not only for nostalgia, but also for interesting and funny stories. Even if it is naive. If there is no time or desire to revise everything entirely, it is enough to watch a full-length movie from 5 episodes about the stolen ruby, which contains all the most important things that are present in this cartoon. I think that modern children should watch this series at least for the sake of acquaintance with classic animation. Surely, they will like it no less than us in due time.

Resue Rangers away!
Vornoff-226 May 1999
The Rescue Rangers is one of those rare children's programs that actually gets better as the viewer gets older. The writing is clever, the characters are easily likeable, and the capers the furry heros solve are delightfully absurd. Movie fans will also find parodies of films like The Fly and The African Queen as well as numerous pop references. The surprisingly three-dimentional heros are best part. Chip is dutiful, quick-witted, and resourceful. Of course, this means he often plays the straight-man for the others' antics. Dale, in many ways, is Chip's antithesis. He's fun-lovng and goofy, and he has a penchant for playing practical jokes.

Gadget is about the most atypical female character in all of cartoons. She's an absent-minded if brilliant mechanic who tends to solve most of the team's more urgent problems with her lever, unusual, and often dangerous inventions. Monterey Jack is an adventureous Aussie with a love for brawling and an even greater love for cheese. The really cool thing about Monterey is that he can both be a leader like Chip and a joker like Dale. Monterey's "little pally" Zipper rounds out the team as the courageous and surprisingly strong musca domestica.

Chip N' Dale at their best.
montagrappa24 November 2006
Next to Gummi Bears, I would say that this is Disney's best cartoon series ever. Although the production values weren't as high as the other Disney shows. The animation wasn't as good, and the music was good but repetitive(although the theme song is only 2nd to Gummi Bears), but they were countered & matched by the interesting concept of noble minded rodents and a house fly engaged in a never-ending battle to right wrongs, no matter how big or small the case seems, completely disregarding the fact that they may not get thanks for helping people and, eventually, overshadowed by the fun, funny & genuinely cute (but not too cute) stories.

Although stories are usually what make or break shows, the characters have a big part in making them work too. And, as some people have stated here, all 5 of the Rescue rangers were three-dimensional. They're easily likable & much easier to sympathize with than in some of the other Disney shows. And, more so than in any other Disney show (even Gummi Bears), they were a team. They would all contribute something in an episode that would help save the day. My favorite was Dale. His episodes are great (my #1 favorite focuses on him), and he's the one I relate to the most. I loved all the other Rangers too. The main villains were also entertaining. Fat Cat & his amusingly dim henchmen & especially Professer Nimnul were very funny and easy to root against. And the guest characters were great as well. My favorite heroe was Foxglove, a bat who is Dale's true love (I'm a romantic) & appears in my favorite episode. I also liked Sparky the absent-minded lab rat (from another favorite of mine, Does Pavlov Ring a Bell?), and many others. My favorite guest villain was Sewernose de Bergerac (from A Case of Stageblight). He was funny yet at the same time a little tragic, although I didn't feel too sorry for him (he IS a bad guy after all), plus I have a thing for thespian villains. Unlike in Ducktales where the guest characters don't do very much, helping to move the story along but not really standing on their own (there are some exceptions, Gladstone Gander & Dijon coming first to mind), the ones in RR practically scream "Bring me back!" at the end of the ep.

Of course the stories were excellent too. My favorite episodes were Pound of the Baskervilles, Risky Beesness, A Case of Stage Blight, Last Train to Cahville, Prehysterical Pet, Does Pavlov Ring a Bell?, A Creep From The Deep, Chocolate Chips, Weather Or Not, Shell Shocked, Love Is a Many Splintered Thing, Double O' Chipmunk, The Pied Piper Power Play, A Fly in the Ointment, and my #1 favorite Good Times Bat Times. These & most of the other episodes were funny, clever, well-done, interesting & best of all moral.

I honestly don't know how else to praise this series. Just buy the DVDs so that Disney will release volume 3 & finish up this great series.

BOTTOM LINE: 10/10 7th best cartoon ever.

The best cartoon series I saw in my youth.
Vivekmaru4520 July 2010
Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers is the best animated series by Disney, even better than Duck Tales and Gummi Bears. The variety in each of the episodes is breathtaking. This is a series to be enjoyed by anyone young or old.

The series follows the adventures of the well known chipmunks Chip and Dale along with three new lovable characters Gadget, Monterrey Jack and his sidekick Zipper. They band up to form the Rescue Rangers, an organization dedicated to helping animals (and humans) in trouble and to fight criminal masterminds such as Norton Nimno (and others).

Excellent animation and musical score, excellent dialogues and voice acting (Characterization).

A worthy edition to your Disney collection.

This defines classic Disney!
Pilsung897 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
As a kid "Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers" was one of my favorite cartoons to watch. As an adult I still love it just as much as I did back then, if not more. This cartoon series is a true Disney classic from the late 80's/early 90's. It's funny, entertaining, and sometimes even gives moral lessons. It's a shame it didn't last longer.

Chip is the leader of the rescue rangers. He's very responsible and very serious about his duties as a rescue ranger, sometimes to the point that the others accuse him of being too bossy or not knowing how to have fun. Dale is a devoted ranger but likes to goof around, which tends to get himself or his pals in trouble. Monterey Jack is a tough Australian mouse who has a lot of power, which is valuable to the team. Unfortunately he has an addiction to cheese that is triggered at the sight or smell of cheese, and this usually ends up causing trouble. Zipper is a housefly who is Monterey's side kick. Gadget is my favorite. She's an extremely brilliant mouse who can build almost anything from random stuff, much like Macgyver. Chip and Dale compete for her affection, though she usually doesn't notice as she is somewhat socially inept. Despite that, she is very caring towards Chip and Dale, and never prefers one over the other. Together the team investigates various mysteries that the police often don't or can't handle.

As I said, this was and still is an awesome cartoon. I wish it lasted longer, but cartoons from that time typically lasted only 2-3 years. Still, it's a classic that I watch whenever I get the chance. This is true cartoon material. Most of the junk that's been coming out lately is stupid and poorly written. Shows like this are what it's all about.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Chip n Dale, Rescue Rangers
ashleak614 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The Disney TV cartoon business was definitely going good in the late 80s into the 90s. With successful Disney TV cartoons such as DuckTales, Gummi Bears and New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh already pleasing kids, adults and animation fans, Disney made another series to add on to that list and that series is called Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers or CDRR for short. This is the fourth series in the Golden Era of Disney TV cartoons. In this series, it's about the popular Disney chipmunks Chip n Dale and their friends Gadget Hackwrench, Monterey Jack and Zipper the fly as they solve little cases and meet new people. Chip n Dale have both developed personalities in CDRR unlike the shorts which all they did was pester Donald. This show is definitely funny and clever. I recommend that you check out this show if you haven't already. Buy the DVD box sets today, this show is way better than any of the cartoons on Nickelodeon and CN today. If you like this show, check out later Golden Era Disney TV cartoons like "Darkwing Duck", "Goof Troop" or "TaleSpin". Rescue Rangers away!

Funny and intelligent family fun
Vornoff-221 May 1999
Though essentially a children's program, Chip N' Dale's Rescue Rangers possesses that wonderful quality which makes it enjoyable to both young and old alike. The story follows four noble-minded rodents and a house fly who solve mysteries and generally help people, and others, in need. The villains are often hysterical and their diabolical schemes hilariously absurd. There is physical comedy aplenty and enough action to keep the wee ones interested. Meanwhile, the not-so-wee ones will be recognizing referenes to everything from Rocky and Bullwinkle to The Fly. The voice acting is clever, and the charaters are easy and likeable.

Of the five main charaters, Chip is the sharp-witted, responsible one. That of course means he often has to play the unfortunate straight man to the others' hijinks. Dale is the silly, fun-loving one who likes to play jokes (usually on Chip) and basically have a good time. Monterey Jack's the affable, adventurous Aussie wth a nose for trouble and even more so for cheese. Monterey's "little pally" Zipper the housefly courageosly performs feats above and beyond the call of duty of a "household pest." Gadget is the MacGyver of the group. She's an absent minded, though unquestionably brilliant, engineer who can make just about anything out of practically nothing.

It's fun. It's funny. It's the Rescue Rangers. Enjoy!

Chip 'n' Dale do their take on The Rescuers with an assortment of memorable characters and you can't deny it works
IonicBreezeMachine7 May 2022
The Rescue Rangers consisting of stern, no-nonsense chipmunk leader Chip (Tress MacNeille), laid back goofball Dale (Corey burton), muscular but cheese crazed Aussie mouse adventurer Monterey "Monty" Jack (Peter Cullen and Jim Cummings), team mechanic/inventor genius mouse Gadget (Tress Macneile), and their mostly mute housefly friend Zipper (Corey burton) solve cases that are too small to get the attention of the police and do everything from helping both humans and animals finding stolen or missing items to thwarting plans of villains such as criminal mastermind Fat Cat (Jim Cummings) or mad scientist professor Norton Nimnul (Jim Cummings).

Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers was the fifth show Disney produced for televison following the success of Gummi Bears, DuckTales, and The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, as well as the failures of The Wuzzles and the one off pilot turned telefilm Fluppy Dogs. Initially planned as a companion series for DuckTales alongside two other projects Talespin and Double-O Duck (which would be retooled as Darkwing Duck), the series initially was pitched as being based on The Rescuers but was rejected due to Disney in development on the theatrical sequel The Rescuers: Down Under. The series was then retooled as an unrelated concept called Metro Mice featuring a new team lineup with early versions of Gadget and Monterey Jack, as well as a scrapped chameleon character and Indiana Jones-esque mouse Kit Colby. While the concept was better received, the kit Colby character was not and Jeffrey katzenberg and Michael Eisner suggested the established chipmunk duo of Chip 'n' Dale for the leads. The show was a solid success upon release becoming briefly becoming the top cartoon in Syndication, and alongside staples like Talespin and Darkwing Duck helped to give The Disney Afternoon the clout it so enjoyed. At its core Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers is a pretty standard sleuthing show that owes much of its existence to precursors like Scooby-Doo and its various imitators (and also the Nancy Drew/hardy boys mysteries but beside the point), but it's in the creativity of its animation and characters the show really succeeds.

If you remember the Chip 'n' Dale shorts where the duo had abrasive encounters with Donald Duck or Pluto the dog, their personalities are kept pretty intact with only the addition of details such as Chip's Indiana Jones inspired jacket and fedora or Dale's Hawaiian shirt which was a reference to Magnum P. I., and yes, I'm serious about both those points. New characters such as Monterey jack with him serving as the team's muscle fits with the 80s era in which the show was produced as you can see clear influence on the character with American fascination with Aussie "bushman" culture that came about from the likes of such films as Crocodile Dundee. While Monterey jack is undeniably inspired by America's Aussie craze of the time, he's given enough personality that he feels like his own creation rather than a reskin of popular trends of the time, Gadget is also quite fun playing the very MacGyver esque tech genius of the team whose inventions made of discarded household trash or appliances create some memorable devices like submarines, zeppelins, cars, or other assorted gizmos that serve the exact needed purpose to get the team. We also have Zipper, who serves in a similar capacity to the Recue Rangers how Slimer served the Ghostbusters in The Real Ghostbusters, only with Zipper being much more endearing and less abrasive.

The plots of Rescue Rangers are pretty standard for the type of show this is, unlike the pulp adventure inspired approach by Ducktales or slice of life adventures in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Rescue Rangers has a lot in common with the various Hanna-Barbera sleuth shows produced during the 70s in an attempt to capture the success of Scooby-Doo, while it's a well worn formula that has often been the subject of parody the fact that it's formula isn't bad because just because something is formula doesn't make it bad, but laziness with that formula is. Rescue Rangers while it uses a well-worn formula, it sprinkles in enough details to keep it engaging with a world that's illy but also not afraid to get legitimately threatening or unnerving at certain points with episodes "Pound of the baskervilles" featuring strong gothic atmosphere that pays homage to Sherlock Holmes adventures or "The Case of the Cola Cult" which took a relatively taboo topic of cults and tried to explain it and their dangers to viewers of the time. It's little details and extra bits of effort that made the show a cut above the Hanna Barbera schlock that recycled that formula, that and of course the animation which par for the course for Disney Television was putting out higher than average quality in comparison to other syndicated cartoons of the era such as Rankin/Bass or Dic.

Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers doesn't stray far from the formula established by children's sleuth shows, but thanks to creativity in both the writing, characters, and world created it manages to refresh it and make it feel new again. The animation is as expected really strong and puts many other syndicated cartoons of the era to shame, and there's a fun sense of comradery among the central cast of characters that makes them fun to join on adventures.

After all these years this doesn't get old

One of the best shows from the time when cartoons told a story and took us out on an adventure instead of trying to force some unacceptable ideas down our throats. This show is universal, its concepts are universal. I was a child when first saw it. I remember how together with other kids we were waiting for every new episode. Now I'm watching it with my own kids and they love it! They love it more than modern cartoon series and they invite friends to watch RR together. Everyone loves it. That makes me wonder why aren't Disney capable of creating anything like this anymore.

I've know there's some new series with these characters (Chip and Dale at least) but I have no interest in watching it.

"Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers
JEANYLASER4 September 2006
i love the rescue rangers because they are smart crime-fighters and i think Disney has a great job and I love Chip and Dale and rest of the team. and maybe the whole world and love Chip and Dale Disney needs a help from your friends. But sometimes Fat Cat hates the rescue rangers he always captured them and that why i love the rescue rangers and i watching them right now. including the Rangers signal and this is the great way to watch them so i can call out Rescue Rangers away. do i like in the rangers is the leader Chip because he is just like Mickey Mouse. And i can't wait for the volume 2 of the rescue rangers so i can buy in disneyworld.

A show that was good, even though it was part of the Disney Afternoon lineup.

This show is great, the character and designs are great, theme song is golden, great villians, and another solid adventure animated cartoon. The problem I have with it are the character sizes changes sometimes which kinda is distracting. The show itself isn't very eventful. It's still entertaining except the show really needed something to end off on and because of the 65 episode limited "law". It wasn't able to do a lot for the long run. The episodes aren't as eventful as I was hoping for except for the 5 part storyline. However, still a solid show, because at least from beginning to end there wasn't anything wrong with the content itself. It may go slipping through the cracks as a been there done that show. It's still fun to watch for the time period it came out so let's go! Also I find it weird seeing Chip 'n' Dale fighting crime when in the classic Mickey Mouse shorts they antagonize Donald or Pluto.

Fun, but could be better
masterbrain_2715 July 2004
Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers was pretty good, with nifty vehicles made of old toys and garbage, quality animation and good voice acting. However, it could have stood a few more episodes. The balance of characters was strong enough to carry out another season's worth of plots without any slowdown.

There was Gadget, unaware of her genius and beauty, Monteray Jack, tough guy with a cheese fetish, Zipper, a fly who frequently acted as a parachute for the various rangers, and Chip 'n Dale, constantly bickering and talking incredibly fast.

Disney did occasionally add new episodes to their animated shows, Gargoyles for example. I've seen Chip 'n Dale and I've seen Gargoyles. And I think Chip 'n Dale could have produced more episodes than Gargoyles.

An Appalling joke that should never have been made
edfrangos21 May 2022
Having Peter Pans life parallel to his former actor Bobby Driscoll by using what happened to him is not done in the best of circumstances. This poor guy suffered ridicule at school and struggled to find employment. Only to have his life end in Tragedy. Similar to what happened to the person who played Anakin in the Phantom Menace. That is what I hate the most about this movie.
