A little disturbing
Nozz28 September 2002
On the one hand, this is the sort of a comedy where an auto can run off the road and flip over and nobody's hurt. On the other hand, it begins and ends with some very realistic (or real) mentally deficient people and it doesn't seem to place much value on light-heartedness. Michel Piccoli as a man institutionalized for homicidal rage is not very frightening and certainly not very amusing; more than those, he's affecting. The movie may be trying for the sort of melancholy whimsy that succeeded in _King of Hearts_ (also about mental cases) but if so, it involves us too much in the sadness.
