Leonardo DiCaprio was the heartthrob of every young girl in the 90s. His charismatic and handsome looks made everyone fall in love with him. His subsequent roles in The Basketball Diaries, Romeo+Juliet and Titanic made him arguably the most popular young movie star of his generation.

When we think about Sam Raimi, naturally the first films that come to mind are The Evil Dead Series or Tobey Maguire’s Spiderman Trilogy — however, there is a much lesser known Raimi movie that deserves as much if not more hype than some of his most celebrated projects and that is The Quick and The Dead. It is an often overlooked western from the ‘90s that tries to reinvent the genre in a new light. The film not only boasts a stacked cast but also has that stylistic wow factor innate to all Sam Raimi movies, separating it from

The Western is one of the many genres that have endured in the vast canon of American film. And with Horizon: An American Saga set for release soon, all eyes will be on Kevin Costner to prove that the Western is still as appealing as it ever was.
It would not be incorrect, of course, to suggest that Costner’s forthcoming passion project is pushing the boundaries of his line of work. The Western epic is a big risk for the California-born actor, given how much of his own money went into financing the flick, which will be released in two parts.
Starring Sam Worthington, Costner, and Sienna Miller, among others, the film is set during the American Civil War.
Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga
Even though the backdrop and main idea of Horizon: An American Saga is fairly well-known, Costner might still score a career-high with this film.

Rare Picture of Leonardo DiCaprio and Monica Bellucci Before His Titanic Fame Will Make You Feel Old
With Leonardo DiCaprio approaching 50 and Monica Bellucci approaching 60, it’ll be almost three decades since dating rumors between the two ignited, thanks to one photo. It remains unconfirmed if they were ever romantically inclined towards each other as nothing apart from that pic suggested that being the case, which has once again gone viral since finding its way to the internet.
1995 was a major year for DiCaprio, as it was only four years since the actor made his debut, which witnessed him garnering major exposure with The Basketball Diaries and The Quick and the Dead. ’95 was also the same year when he would cross paths with the Italian sensation Monica Bellucci.

Los Angeles, Feb 14 (Ians) Actress Sharon Stone claims that being famous is a drag as she has to keep picking up $3,000 dinner tabs.
The actress told a Women’s Cancer Fund event in March 2023, days after the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, she had lost half her money in the recent financial crisis.
It seems she is now back on her feet as she has now told InStyle about how she regularly gets left with huge dinner cheques when she is out: “You go out to dinner, and there’s 15 people at the table, and who gets the cheque? You get the $3,000 dinner check every single time.”
She also said it’s “very expensive to be famous.” But she has said she is far from stingy, reports aceshowbiz.com.

"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" is the most contentious of the first three "Indiana Jones" movies. Director Steven Spielberg's filmmaking instincts are sharp as ever, as is Harrison Ford's charisma, and even before the mine tunnel sequence, the film moves like a roller coaster in the best way possible.
But in aping early 20th-century pulp, the film inherits their exoticized distortions of non-American cultures. "Temple of Doom" is mostly set in British-occupied India, but the villains are not these colonizers. No, Indy and co. face off against an indigenous threat: the vicious Thuggee cult that enslaves children and makes human sacrifices to the Hindu god Kali. I'm admittedly not an expert on Indian culture (nor were the writers of the movie), so I'll defer to one who is; Indian-Canadian writer Saffron Maeve has taken the film to task over at Little White Lies. Otherwise, I'll let...

Barbie remains the biggest Hollywood success story of the past year. A union between a beloved Mattel toy brand and the director of Little Women and Lady Bird, there’s a reason star and producer Margot Robbie pitched the combination as comparable to Steven Spielberg and dinosaurs. What you have here is a subject matter that generations of audiences grew up on and an auteur director bringing it to life in a fresh and exciting way. In 2019, Warner Bros. saw Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s vision, much to the studio’s reward four years later.
However, there was a time when such a pitch wouldn’t have been accepted, no matter who the director was. In fact, Sharon Stone revealed in a recent social media post that she could not even get studio executives to entertain the basic idea of a Barbie movie during the 1990s.

Sharon Stone is opening up about helping Leonardo DiCaprio several decades ago.
On Monday (November 20), the 65-year-old actress made a statement about paying the 49-year-old actor’s salary for their 1995 Western film, The Quick and the Dead.
At the time, the studio was not excited about hiring a relatively new face, but Sharon believed in him.

She wrote in an Instagram caption, “Yes, I paid @leonardodicaprio’s salary out of mine. No I didn’t pay @russellcrowe’s, but I did ask for the film to be delayed two weeks so we could get him here from Australia, and our producer @mikemedavoyup agreed to the delay. And to cover those expenses.”
Sharon concluded her post with a “thank you.”

Update: In celebration of Sam Raimi’s The Quick and the Dead being added to The Criterion Channel as part of this month’s Women of the West series, Sharon Stone is clarifying her involvement in some of the casting. The popular story is that Stone paid the salaries of her then-unknown co-stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe, but on Instagram she’s saying that’s only partially true with her giving credit to producer Mike Medavoy for at least part of the casting.
“Yes, I paid @leonardodicaprio’s salary out of mine. No I didn’t pay @russellcrowe’s, but I did ask for the film to be delayed two weeks so we could get him here from Australia, and our producer @mikemedavoyup agreed to the delay. And to cover those expenses.”

Leonardo DiCaprio still remembers Sharon Stone’s generosity.
In her 2021 memoir, Stone revealed that she backed hiring a then-unknown DiCaprio for a role in the 1995 movie, The Quick and the Dead.
“The studio said if I wanted him so much, I could pay him out of my own salary — so I did,” wrote Stone.
DiCaprio told E! News this week that he has thanked Stone “many times” for that act.
“I don’t know if I sent her an actual, physical thank-you gift, but I cannot thank her enough,” said the actor.
Stone was a producer on the film, and also asked for Russell Crowe to appear in the movie, directed by Sam Raimi.
“She said, ‘These are the two actors I want to work with,” DiCaprio recalled. “It’s incredible. She’s been a huge champion of cinema and giving other actors opportunities, so I’m very thankful.”

Leonardo DiCaprio is forever indebted to Sharon Stone, and he expressed his gratitude in a recent interview.
The 49-year-old Titanic legend is a bona fide movie star in 2023. However, when he worked with Sharon on The Quick and the Dead in 1995, he was relatively unknown and studio heads weren’t sure about him.

Leonardo DiCaprio revealed to E! News that he has thanked Sharon Stone “many times” for paying his acting salary in 1995 when the studio refused to cast him in Sam Raimi’s revisionist Western drama “The Quick and the Dead.” DiCaprio was coming off his Oscar-nominated breakthrough role in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” at the time, and Stone was quite eager to work with the young star. She was adamant about casting DiCaprio and Russel Crowe in the film, and she was willing to pay for it.

Among the myriad reasons we could call the Criterion Channel the single greatest streaming service is its leveling of cinematic snobbery. Where a new World Cinema Project restoration plays, so too does Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight. I think about this looking at November’s lineup and being happiest about two new additions: a nine-film Robert Bresson retro including L’argent and The Devil, Probably; and a one-film Hype Williams retro including Belly and only Belly, but bringing as a bonus the direct-to-video Belly 2: Millionaire Boyz Club. Until recently such curation seemed impossible.
November will also feature a 20-film noir series boasting the obvious and the not. Maybe the single tightest collection is “Women of the West,” with Johnny Guitar and The Beguiled and Rancho Notorious and The Furies only half of it. Lynch/Oz, Irradiated, and My Two Voices make streaming premieres; Drylongso gets a Criterion Edition; and joining...

Once upon a time being a nerd was looked at as a negative, with depictions of them being scrawny losers with glasses and high pitched voices who loved comic books and wouldn’t know how to throw a baseball unless Captain America taught them how. But something happened. Geek culture became mainstream culture and the people who brought it to us were the ones who once felt so alienated by their seemingly uncool passions. Enter Joss Whedon who used his childhood isolations to craft some of the biggest cult hit TV shows and penned many groundbreaking screenplays – everything from sci-fi to horror to action adventure to animation to Shakespeare and some of the biggest superhero flicks ever. But behind closed doors there seemed to be a different tale, a story of a man so consumed with ego that he made everyone else tremble in terror around him. It would seem...

The "Evil Dead" trilogy is definitive proof that director/actor duo Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are a match made in bloody heaven. The original film of the franchise, 1981's "The Evil Dead" was Raimi's directorial feature film debut that was shot on a measly 375,000 budget, but would quickly earn itself cult status through its Nc-17 rating and oppressive, nihilistic atmosphere. The film's premise was simple, following five college students who unleash something demonic and malicious during their stay in their isolated cabin in the woods. Once all hell breaks loose, Ashley "Ash" Williams (Campbell) is the last man standing amongst the wrath of the Deadites.
Years later, Raimi would return with "Evil Dead II," which centers the series once again on our survivor Ash, but also most notably brought the camp factor that the series would become known for. It's the fan-favorite of the entire franchise — delivering an over-the-top,...

In the early 1990s, Sam Raimi was a low-budget horror maestro who'd made the leap to studio filmmaking without sacrificing his gonzo visual style. Riding high off the commercial success of 1990's "Darkman," a deliriously fun and funky comic-book riff that still stands as one of the best superhero movies ever made, Raimi could pretty much call his shot. So he did. And that's how Universal Pictures bankrolled the third installment of a horror series that most people had never heard of, let alone seen.
The ending of "Evil Dead 2," which dropped the modern-day hero of the first two, tenuously linked movies, in the Middle Ages was an unexpected howler of a punchline. Under no circumstances did I expect Raimi would actually make a third movie set in medieval times. That would be expensive. And silly. But if you could suddenly afford to make an expensively silly movie, would you not?...

(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, we dive into the final duel in Sam Raimi's blistering, stylistic, and woefully underrated Western "The Quick and the Dead.")
Who expected Sam Raimi's first appearance in this new weekly column to spotlight one of the many brilliant set pieces in either "Spider-Man" or "Spider-Man 2"? While that would've seemed like the safest bet to make, I couldn't help but find myself drawn to a very different (but no less worthy) entry hidden in the acclaimed filmmaker's holster. 1995's "The Quick and the Dead" feels like one of those quintessential underseen gems that younger viewers were more likely to discover only after Raimi returned to the headlines upon helming "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness", but longtime fans have been singing the film's praises...

During the 1990s, there was a brief moment when directors everywhere collectively decided that they were going to make Westerns popular again. From Tombstone to Unforgiven, nostalgic filmmakers pined for the days of operatic shootouts and sweaty protagonists, but that doesn’t mean audiences agreed with them. With a few exceptions, it seemed like the world had in fact moved on from the glory days of Leone and Ford.
The biggest shame is that there were some legitimately thrilling cowboy movies made back then that would have been insanely successful had they been released in another time. My personal favorite of these misfires was Sam Raimi’s tragically underseen Western The Quick and the Dead, a 1995 Sharon Stone vehicle that deserves to be reappraised not only as a satirical pastiche but as a genuinely great example of a classic Western.

Movie robots are inherently cool. They're brought to life by the best special effects available, like Phil Tippett's amazing stop-motion, or puppeteers inside detailed suits. From Kenny Baker within Lucasfilm's famous R2-D2 bucket to the pair of stuntmen, Frankie Carpenter and Frankie Darro, who brought Robby the Robot to life, there are a bunch of ways to pull it off.
But most movie robots require bearing a couple of things in mind. One is if the audience is supposed to empathize with them, which means comforting, funny voices — Tars, for example — or human-ish eyes, like Optimus Prime. The other is how close are they to falling into the uncanny valley. We're wired to notice when something doesn't look quite right, and some movie robots benefit from using that to scare the hell out of us. There's another level of robot movie power to discuss, and that's how...

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
For this––our last episode of 2022––we bring on the extremely talented filmmaker Josh Ruben to discuss the legendary Sam Raimi. We primarily focus on some of Raimi’s earlier B-Sides: namely Crimewave (currently streaming on Tubi), The Quick and the Dead, and For Love of the Game.
Ruben himself stars in the new film A Wounded Fawn, now streaming on Shudder. This is a brutal, gnarly, allegorical piece of horror that earns a solid recommendation from The B-Side. Seek it out and enjoy! Ruben has also directed two top-notch features: Scare Me and Werewolves Within.

James Cameron recalls awkward Leonardo DiCaprio audition encounter that almost lost him Titanic role
James Cameron has recalled an awkward encounter with Leonardo DiCaprio that almost lost him his Titanic role.
The director, who is promoting new sequel Avatar: The Way of Water, reflected on the casting process of Titanic, which starred DiCaprio alongside Kate Winslet.
Cameron said that he initially met with DiCaprio for a chat about the role, following which “there was a screen test” to ensure he had chemistry with Winslet, who had signed up to play the lead character, Rose.
He remembered that DiCaprio “charmed everyone” in the room, but said that the actor told him “I don’t read” upon realising Cameron would require him to audition for the role.
“He came back a couple of days later, and I had the camera set up to record the video,” Cameron told GQ in a video retrospective interview about his career.

Gene Hackman is one of the greatest actors of all time. He's also someone who has reinvented himself for many different generations. Although some great actors have never returned to the highlights of their early work, Hackman continued to prove why he was one of the best for decades after he first broke out in the industry.
Between crime thrillers, stage adaptations, quirky comedies, historical epics, and even a superhero movie franchise, Hackman has left major contributions to nearly every genre. Although Hackman clearly had a commanding dramatic presence, he wasn't afraid to take a chance on comedic roles. His single scene in Mel Brooks' 1974 classic "Young Frankenstein" is one of the most memorable moments in the film. Hackman has a consistently high quality of work, to the point that even a disastrous comedy like "Welcome to Mooseport" or a dull comic book movie like "Superman IV: The Quest for...

Over the course of her career, Sharon Stone has been one of Hollywood’s most enigmatic characters, and most of the people who’ve worked with her have plenty of interesting stories to tell. When Sam Raimi saw Stone in Basic Instinct, it was love at first sight, and he cast her as the lead in his 1995 Western, The Quick and the Dead. When they started working together, Raimi had heard some of the Stone stories. But, at the time of the film’s release, Raimi told us the lasting impression Stone made on him was that of a very smart, instinctive collaborator. We here at /Film love ourselves some Sam Raimi. The auteur filmmaker has been dazzling audiences for over 40 years, with genre-bending films like "The Evil Dead," "Crimewave," "The Quick and the Dead," "Darkman," "Drag Me to Hell," and the original "Spider-Man" films, not to mention lending his hand to TV shows like "Xena: Warrior Princess," "M.A.N.T.I.S.," and "Hercules." Raimi's refusal to be pigeon-holed into one genre and his unapologetic love of taking huge creative risks have made him a favorite of film fans everywhere.

Sam Raimi wanted to make the MCU a little “Strange”-r.
The “Evil Dead” and “Spider-Man” director explained during the commentary track of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” that he had to convince Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to include a particularly quirky sequence involving Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor). The adversaries have a staredown, with close-ups of their eyes darting back and forth, á la Raimi’s “The Quick and the Dead,” but Feige was skeptical over the silliness of the sequence.
“I think Kevin thought maybe it was a little corny, and he wanted to cut it out,” Raimi said, via Comic Book Resources. “But I said, ‘Please, Kevin, let me have that.’ He went, ‘Okay, fine. Have your corny stuff.’ It was very, very kind of him.”

Sam Raimi is one of the most unique and inventive filmmakers of our time. Coming out of an independent background, his early films are noted for their daring style and wacky sense of humor, elements that Raimi would carry over into his big-budget Hollywood films. Even in his more mainstream work like the "Spider-Man" trilogy, "The Quick and the Dead," "Oz the Great and Powerful," and "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," you can easily tell that Raimi hasn't lost his imaginative spark.

Sam Raimi is a director who has been primarily known for two things throughout his illustrious career: horror and superhero movies. The man behind "The Evil Dead" and the original "Spider-Man" trilogy is a master of his craft and, even though he's accomplished much outside of these genres (see "The Quick and the Dead"), these two categories are most closely associated with his filmmaking. And, perhaps more than any of us might have expected, "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" works as a pretty shocking marriage of the two. Even within the confines of the generally family-friendly Marvel Cinematic...

Right from the first scene of 1995's "The Quick and the Dead," director Sam Raimi makes it clear that he's playfully toying with his audience.

We need to talk about Sam Raimi's most criminally underrated film: the 2000 supernatural thriller, "The Gift." Raimi has churned out a wide range of movies across genres, and some of his films, despite dismal box office performances, have garnered acclaim over the course of time, such as his revisionist Western, "The Quick and the Dead." "The Gift" has been forgotten, however, and it should not be.
His "A Simple Plan" also comes to mind, which was a neo-noir adaptation starring Bill Paxton, but the film basked in the glow of various award nominations despite underperforming at the domestic level. However, Raimi's "The Gift" is extremely under the...

The Power of the Dog director has apologised for remarks about the Williams sisters, but they could cost her a gong. If so, she wouldn’t be the first nominee to fall from A-list to blacklist
On Sunday morning, Jane Campion was riding high in the saddle. Her homoerotic western, The Power of the Dog, had been cleaning up at awards ceremonies before the Oscars at the end of the month, where it is nominated in 12 categories, including best picture and best director. Of course, there have been dissenters. More than usual, perhaps: the film is a Netflix production and therefore likely to infuriate the sorts of audiences who would never have ventured out to a cinema to see it, but may have found it among their recommendations because they once watched Adam Sandler’s The Ridiculous 6.

“While the events of this story are fictional…These. People. Existed.” Thus begins Jeymes Samuel’s western “The Harder They Fall,” currently streaming on Netflix. The period picture is populated with 19th century Black icons including Nat Love (Jonathan Majors), a former enslaved cowboy, Mary Fields (Zazie Beetz), the first Black star-route mail carrier in the U.S., and Rufus Black (Idris Elba), the head of the ruthless multi-racial gang of bank robbers.
“The Harder They Fall” is the first major Western led by a Black cast since Mario Van Peebles 1993 “Posse.” The director, though, told the L.A. Times that “The Harder They Fall” shouldn’t be described as simply a “Black” Western. “It’s just a story about these people in their own world, just like ‘Rio Bravo” is a story about John Wayne and Dean Martin in their own world,” Samuel said. “These aren’t white Westerns or white movies,...

Bruce Campbell has partnered with filmmaker Sam Raimi for years. At the beginning of their careers, they worked together on The Evil Dead straight out of college. Much later in Raimi’s blockbuster entertainments, be it the Spider-Man trilogy or Oz the Great and Powerful, Campbell still cameoed. Which makes it strange when the actor grows tightlipped at the mention of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
That Benedict Cumberbatch superhero movie is being directed by Sam Raimi, marking the filmmaker’s first superhero picture since Spider-Man 3 and his first collaboration with Marvel Studios, period. So the movie invariably came up during our conversation with Campbell about The Evil Dead and it’s 40th anniversary. But when we ask the actor whether he’d be interested in doing cameos in superhero movies again now that Raimi’s back in the game, Campbell pauses for a half-second before saying,...

Discussing her career at Zurich Film Festival, Sharon Stone also commented on the referendum taking place on the same day in Switzerland, with nearly two-thirds of Swiss voters backing the introduction of same-sex marriage.
“It should be more because when is anyone else’s sex life your business? You may not like it, you may not understand it, but it doesn’t belong to you,” she said.
This year’s recipient of the Golden Icon Award, Stone picked Martin Scorsese’s “Casino” as the accompanying screening, calling it a “sensational film.” It earned Stone her only Oscar nomination to date.
“I have three kids; I have been in lockdown with three teenage boys. I live in a fraternity house with smelly socks – I forgot I was a movie star.”
The actor, who grew up in Pennsylvania, also opened up about her parents, calling her father “an extreme feminist.”

Two-time Oscar nominated Italian cinematographer Dante Spinotti will receive this year’s Pardo Alla Carriera Achievement Award at August’s 74th Locarno Film Festival. Locarno will also host screenings of two of Spinotti’s standout films resulting from his long-time partnership with director Michael Mann: Oscar-nominated “The Insider” and classic heist thriller “Heat.” Spinotti will receive the prize in a ceremony at the Piazza Grande on Aug. 12, and hold an audience-led conversation the following day.
Spinotti’s prolific and consistent output has crossed genres and cinematic trends for four decades. His feature debut work was in Sergio Citti’s “Il minestrone” in 1981, but he was quickly off to Hollywood where he made an impact with the diversity and quality of his efforts, working on films like Sam Raimi’s Western “The Quick and the Dead,” Garry Marshall’s rom-com “Frankie and Johnny” starring Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer, and...

Swiss festival will screen Michael Mann’s The Insider and Heat for which Spinotti was Oscar-nominated.
Italian cinematographer Dante Spinotti will receive the Locarno Film Festival’s lifetime achievement award at its upcoming 74th edition running August 4 to 14, 2021.
Having spent the first 15-years of his career in his native Italy, Spinotti was given the opportunity to work in the US by compatriot producer Dino De Laurentis on Michael Mann’s 1986 mystery horror Manhunter.
It would mark the beginning of a long creative partnership with Michael Mann on a raft of titles including The Insider and Heat, for which Spinotti was Oscar-nominated.
