Joe and the effects steal the show!!!
TheLittleSongbird11 November 2009
I wasn't sure whether I would like Mighty Joe Young. I did see it once with my family beforehand and didn't think much of it. When I did decide to give it a chance again, I am glad I did. I wasn't expecting a perfect family movie, and while this movie is very dark, it also manages to be quite sweet too. I will admit that the beginning is very dark and intense even for a family movie. I will also admit that the plot is very formulaic and that the villains are rather cartoony.

What made this movie though for me was Joe. He was designed superbly and acted very convincingly. Even for an ape, I found him quite adorable, after seeing films like Congo where they scared me so much. Other pluses are the superb special effects and the splendid scenery. Not to mention the lovely music score. The acting was a mixed bag; Charlize Theron was gorgeous as Jill, and Bill Paxton was very good as Gregg. The supporting actors ranged from good to so-so. The relationship between Joe and Jill was very very convincing and sweet, well to me it was. And I know the ending was more King Kong with a happy ending, but I will confess I cried. Maybe it was because I loved Joe so much, I have a habit of empathising with characters that I grow to love.

Overall, it is a decent family movie. It mayn't appeal to you first time, but if given the chance as it did with me, it may grow on you. 7/10 Bethany Cox

Meet King Kong's descendant
Angelus212 November 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this film years ago and finally have come to comment on it. The film is a tale of a ape and a woman who decides after the death of Joes mother to take him back to the US. But Joe escapes and hysteria ensues.

The film is a kids movie bringing the tale of King Kong back with a different kind of twist that works if you haven't watched King Kong; there are similarities but Joe has a softer quality almost a human touch to him that makes the audience connect.

The CGI is quite convincing and the way the animal moves is brilliantly done..... A nice kids movie...

fascinated

I remember watching this film when I was a kid not just once but multiple times and being enthused and affected every time, I was so hooked by Joe and his dreamy eyes and Charlize made me love the jungle but what still fascinates me is how I still remember every detail and how I felt while watching it, and when someone asks me about Charlize this is the first film that jumps to my mind, I guess this is the kind of movie that sticks in your head with its simplicity and purity, such a joyful movie. I guarantee it'll make you laugh, cry, be angry and be very excited when the villain gets what he deserves. the most important message i got from it was to love nature and protect it with my own life because nature reserves our humanity

Fantasic effects that are very realistic
GEM-2012 September 1999
This update of "Mighty Joe Young" features incredible visual effects. They are so seemlessly blended into the picture that Joe seems more than real.

Bill Paxton is great as usual. In fact, most of the cast is pretty good. Charlize Theron is both tough and sexy. She worked better with Paxton than the contrived relationship he had with Helen Hunt in "Twister".

I watched this movie with my kids and they loved it too. Definately a thumbs-up as a family movie. I recommend it.

Fine family adventure about a Jr. Kong.
vip_ebriega26 May 2008
My Take: Fine special effects and decent performances make for a passable remake.

A toned-down remake of the 1949 monster movie (not that the original was violent or so) by Disney, MIGHTY JOE YOUNG is enjoyably pleasant nonetheless. There's a lot of enjoyable moments here to entice kids and adults alike. It's fun, without being too loud, too lumbering and too overproduced unlike other summer affair of the time. It could use more, but enough just seems to be enough. There's a good dosage of fine adventure movie elements. There's action, adventure, humor and even romance.

The romance is created between two of the lead characters. Bill Paxton as an explorer named Gregg O'Hara and a Charlize Theron as Jill Young, a daughter of a late famous Jane Goodall-inspired scientist. There's chemistry between those two, even if it's not entirely developed. It's also a simple boy-likes-the-girl chemistry, but it works well and I bought it. Ask for the adventure, there are numerous action scenes which takes place both in the jungle in even in the city, which shows a scenes directly derived but not entirely similarly to the scene from KING KONG. The special effects by Rick Baker, who actually started doing apes in a somewhat cheesy outcome during the 70's remake of KING KONG, are fine here in the film. There's a convincing use of blue screen and the typical man-in-a-suit technique that actually is less evident here.

Director Ron Underwood (TREMORS) brings a lot of excitement in this familiar territory. The film cannot escape the multitudes of clichés that marred this old genre to the ground. Some things about MIGHTY JOE YOUNG are familiar, as a toned-down kids flick. I've learned the lesson before, there's no one that harshly gets hurt in this film, except the bad guys who must get their just desserts in the end. But the film is lively and enjoyable enough for me to recommend. This is decent family entertainment.

Rating: *** out of 5.

Family Entertainment
Ron-18122 November 2000
This is a typical Disney Studio's movie, and Walt himself would have been pleased with the results. Beautiful photography and some neat graphics make this an enjoyable family film although very predictable. It requires no thought to enjoy this flick and you come away feeling better. Is there really anything else to an entertaining movie. I rated this a 7.

A bit too Disney for me.
poolandrews10 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Mighty Joe Young starts in Africa where conservationist Professor Gregory O'Hara (Bill Paxton) discovers the existence of Joe Young, a huge 2000 pound giant Ape that has been looked after & cared for by Jill Young (Charlize Theron) ever since their mother's were killed on the same night by poachers twelve years ago. O'Hara is amazed by both Joe & Jill & when poachers return to try & kill Joe he arranges for him to be taken to California where he can be properly protected from poachers in a zoo. At first Joe seems happy enough but once again he comes under threat from poachers & when he runs amok at a dinner party he is considered a threat to the public, it's up to Jill & O'Hara to save Joe before he is either killed by poachers or the authorities...

Directed by Ron Underwood this big budget Disney production was a remake of the same titled Mighty Joe Young (1949), while not terrible I suppose this remake is nowhere near as good as the original & at times I found it a bit of an overly sentimental bore with far too many annoying Disney-esquire touches. The script here sticks to the general storyline of the original but changes a lot of the set-pieces to lacklustre effects like the capturing of Joe is changed from Cowboys lassoing him to blokes in jeeps & the fantastic climax set in a nightclub where Joe fights Lions & then saves children in a burning orphanage is replaced with a walk around Hollywood & saving a kid on a burning ferris wheel. While the CGI effects are excellent there's a certain coldness to the action & adventure scenes while the character's are terrible with some annoying comic relief & a really sickening romance between the two leads & lots of moralising about the evils of poaching & the perils of locking animals up in cages rather than letting run free & the parallels that has with our own lives as we too are locked up in cages & it's just that we call them houses. At almost two hours Mighty Joe Young is a bit too long, there's too much mushy Hollywood sentiment including a cringe worthy ending in which random members of the public all decide to give money to rehouse Joe & this remake doesn't have the magical fantastical quality of the original & if I am honest feels lie a poor man's King Kong (1933) with it's slightly weird central relationship between a giant Ape & a pretty blonde woman. Having said that it's watchable I suppose & the effects are good.

As already mentioned the CGI effects are very good as are the practical effects created by Rick Baker who was along with his team nominated for an Oscar but lost out to What Dreams May Come (1998). This being a squeaky clean Disney family film there's no violence & even the main villain doesn't get much of a send-off. Charlize Theron's attempt to portray a character who has never been to civilisation & spent her entire life in the jungles of Africa is hopeless & she comes across as some ball American blonde anyway.

With a supposed budget of about $90,000,000 this had a lot of money spent on it & it show's with great effects & ambitious set-pieces although the finished product doesn't come across as exciting on screen due to the awful music & lack of imagination that isn't the fault of the effects work which is impressive. The acting is bland & I usually quite like Bill Paxton but not in a family film such as this.

Mighty Joe Young is a remake that isn't as good as the original & comes across as a second rate King Kong, hell even the ridiculous King Kong Lives (1986) is better than this. Basically a King Kong wannabe that doesn't cut the mustard & isn't as good as the original Mighty Joe Young either but is still watchable on a corny level.

A Good Remake of a Nice Little Movie
Hitchcoc7 January 2017
This time I think the remake is fine. I thought the original was lightweight at best, being a kind of King Kong sequel. People were enamored with gorillas in those days, not because they were endangered but because they were simply interesting. In this one, the bad guys are poachers who kill a woman and a gorilla. Once the young woman begins to protect Joe, she and Joe become their target. As Joe gets bigger and bigger his stock rises. The positive about this film is that the special effects and Joe's being is so much more convincing that the stop action stuff of the forties. Of course, that doesn't mean the original is less worthy; it's just that things get cleaned up here. This is a good movie and doesn't beg comparisons.

what a stinker!
Zaireeka29 December 1998
That was the worst movie I've seen since The Postman. The ape looked nice and the actors weren't bad (Charlize Theron was actually quite good) but the screenplay was just garbage. There were some really awkward lines and a terribly predictable story. My 13-year-old brother thought it stunk, too... kids under 10 might enjoy this one, but The Prince of Egypt and A Bug's Life are far better movies. Why suffer through Mighty Joe Young when there are so many good alternatives?

Good film, all in all
r96sk9 October 2020
It's basically 'King Kong', let's be honest.

In fairness, though, 'Mighty Joe Young' does do its own thing and it's a film I did feel entertained by. Bill Paxton (Gregg) and Charlize Theron (Jill) are two of the big reasons, they are both enjoyable in this. The effects/animatronics for the gorilla are also impressive, even when Joe is shown via people in costume (incl. Verne Troyer!) he looks decent. They did a fine job in that regard.

The premise isn't anything revolutionary, but there is certainly a fair amount of heart in there. I would've liked it more without the typical happy ending, admittedly. The music and cinematography is solid. The villains, meanwhile, are probably this production's weakest area, I never really became interested in them or their story.

Good film, all in all.

terrible movie
hbs18 April 1999
This movie is a mess. It's too mean-spirited for young children, the plot is completely lame, and the direction is incompetent. The actors do the best they can with the lousy material, but there isn't much for them. I think that the director must have thought that he was making a fast-food commercial, because he constantly includes choppy reaction shots. The worst is when the CGI ape arrives in California and the demographically balanced staff of the preserve come out to meet the truck (like a bunch of kids hearing the Good Humor chimes -- I guess they've never seen a truck before) and the monkey gets out. We jump to what seems like a dozen faces, one after another (some of which never again appear in the film), and they all look as though "it's the best chicken I've ever had". There is also a scene near the beginning of the movie where the two principal actors are "expositing" and you never see them in a two-shot. It looks as though the knucklehead didn't think things through during principal photography and then later needed to get some more footage. So you get these close-ups that jump back and forth, with the faces filling the screen so that they need to put less background in, and it's harder to see all of the continuity errors.

It's probably sad that I saw this piece of junk on video the same week that I saw "Cookie's Fortune".

Seriously what is up with the low rating,I thought it was fantastic.

Warning: Spoilers
Mighty Joe Young tells the tale of a young woman named Jill Young(Charize Theron)who's an owner of a giant gorilla named Joe and his environment is in danger. So it's up to Jill and Bill Paxton's charcther to travel to Los Angeles so that Joe can have a normal life. But when the evil poachers( who killed Jill's mother ) tracks both her and Bill Paxton's charcther down. Will Joe ever be safe?

Overall the story to this is very good, the music is very good and the cast is also very good. I saw it a few times before on TV and it was on Film 4 today. I may never know why this got a low rating cause I seen nothing wrong with it. Overall I really enjoyed this movie and I also was shocked that the gorilla wasn't a real gorilla AT ALL,he was a animatronic created by Rick Baker.Awesome effects. The music was done by the late James Horner(Titanic,Bicentennial Man to name a few) which was both haunting and beautiful especially the windpipe song which had me in tears.

My verdict watch it.

A modern King Kong
esteban174729 August 2003
Technically film industry has developed itself very much with all new developments of software and photography. This film is one of them showing very interesting effects and enormous gorilla as big as his predecessor King Kong. Here the gorilla is raised by a family somewhere in Africa (Kenya or Uganda?) And he becomes very friendly with the lady of the family always complying with her orders. Hunters are everywhere looking for rare things and the gorilla Joe became attractive to them. In order to avoid the gorilla be hurt by the hunters, a decision taken by the lady and difficult to understand it, he was brought into a Californian park where he behave not very well when he found the persons hunting behind him in the past. The major shortcoming of the film was that the gorillas like to live in hidden green (jungle) environment, and this Joe was always running in open fields. It is a good film because of the photography and the effects, and children may enjoy looking at it.

Nothing good about it.
stonecold44442 February 2007
I watched this movie the year it came out in a cinema. It really stuck with me, for reasons the producers/writers and actors could never have guessed.

I was only 10 years old, and went to watch the movie with a bunch of friends. It was the first time I had watched a movie in a cinema without my parents. It was fun, it was exciting, finding the cinema, asking directions taking the bus. All good fun.

Too bad the movie was a real stinker. I remember we had two choices of movies to watch. Life is Beautiful (Currently ranked #82 best movie of all time) or this (ranked #45895890345829038 best movie of all time).

Well my friends and I had a vote, Mighty Joe Young won 5 to 1, I was outvoted. They weren't interested in Life is Beautiful, it wasn't even in English.

Mighty Joe Young is a TERRIBLE movie. It was sickeningly painful, I really hated it EVEN WHEN I WAS 10. I saw the middle parts of the movie recently and instantly recognised it and felt nostalgic, but was more overwhelmed in disgust for the movie and could not continue watching, no matter how much I wanted to remember my first movie outing.

So thanks a lot Ron Underwood, for ruining my first movie outing. I'll never forget you.

Great adaptation of the classic 1947 film
Chiron19877 July 1999
Mighty Joe Young is terrific family fare, and one of the better movies of 1998. It is based on the immortal classic from 1947 of the same name about a young woman and her faithful 20-foot tall, 2,000-pound gorilla named Joe.

Great special effects featuring Joe are the real highlight of the film, especially the animatronics and CGI which truly bring Joe to life.

There are also good performances, especially from Charlize Theron as the young woman, Jill, and Bill Paxton, fresh from Titanic, as the scientist who loves her.

But, the real star is the title character, the Mighty Joe, who brings a wonderfully gentle screen presence, and is the true hero of the film.

Highly recommended for children of all ages.

Fun action-packed family friendly film about a Giant Gorilla (not that one)
MinistryofDoom23 July 2020
Mighty Joe Young is a fun entertaining family-friendly film about a oversized Gorilla who makes his way to the West where he's put on display. Now, you may be thinking to yourself, "I've seen this before" and you would be correct in making the comparison to that other classic film of the big gorilla who goes west, "King Kong", but that's where the similarities end or are atleast diluted to some extent.

Yes, Mighty Joe Young is inspired by King Kong, but it's also clearly inspired by Gorillas in The Mist (1988), which itself is inspired by the life story of Dian Fossey, a conservationist and primatologist who lived in the mountains of Rwanda where she took care of the mountain gorillas until she was murdered. Dian Fossey is a member of The Trimates, a group of three primatologists, which also included Jane Goodall (another person whom inspired this film), who studied apes in their natural habitats.

As well, this film is a remake of the 1949 classic of the same name (Mighty Joe Young) but takes a huge departure from the original story. Whereas in the 1949 version, Jill takes Joe to the west to seek fame and fortune, in this version she (portrayed by the beautiful and ever graceful Charlize Theron) does so out of compassion, love, and good intent for his well-being. Overall, it is a great story that will captivate children and adults alike. The special effects for the time (1998) are very good although at times I felt that there was a little inconsistency in the size of Joe from one scene to the next. This, no doubt, is due to some questionable methods of Camera trickery to enhance Joe's size (who is primarily played by an actor in an animatronic suit). Nevertheless, it's flaws are few and it's thrills are many.

Decent enough effort, typical Disney formula save for Big Monkey.
gazzo-230 December 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I remember when it came out, never got around to seeing it save for a bit on TV years later. I liked it fine after picking up the cheapie Walmart CD of this today.

What works well: Mighty Joe, F/X and 'performance'. Good stuff by the CGI guys, guys in suits and puppets.

Bill Paxton-plays Bill Paxton.

Charlize Theron-pretty young and nothing great here, but okay. Doesn't look like someone raised in Rwanda or whatever though ya know? (Yes I know she was born in South Africa. Not in the bush though...).

Fun supporting work by familiar faces ala Regina King and David Paymer.

Fun Cameos by Terry Moore and Ray Harryhausen.

The finale on the burning Ferris Wheel was well done too.

What doesn't work? Baddie-maybe we need to see more of him? Hard to see the poaching run in the opening scenes on my DVD.

Rather formulaic, right to the Zoo-guys helping Mighty Joe escape.(Paymer, King) we have seen this 1000 times.

Overall nothing great but a worthy family type movie, the orig. is better though.

Not bad, but definitely not the Original
Vigilante-40719 June 2001
I think that perhaps this movie would have been a lot better had Disney not produced it...because I think the movie needed some sort of edge to it to compare it favorably with the original 1949 classic with Terry Moore.

That said, the movie still is fairly enjoyable...the ape effects are something to watch for, as they are executed fairly flawlessly. It is also nice to see Bill Paxton in a more sympathetic role than the loser/goofy guy/bad guy he is often cast as, and Charlize Therizon is very lovely, but her role is so stereotypical that she really can't do much with it or the script.

Special effects.
Peach-22 January 1999
The new version of Mighty Joe Young is a special effects fan's dream. The film itself caters to about an 8 year olds sensibilities and I didn't particularly like it very much. The film was just plain silly in my opinion. I didn't want it to be gory and over the top. I just wanted it to take itself more seriously. Cool special effects though.

It's easy to see why this bombed
metalrage6662 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The main problems I had with this is not Joe himself, but sadly, the overall story as well as the acting and effects. Despite the implausibility of a gorilla like Joe, he's the only character with any redeeming quality and he's not even real. The 1940's version with the Harryhousen effects are far better than this uninspired outing.

The underlying message that this movie and others like it love to convey is 1- that animals are still on this earth solely for our amusement, regardless of the well meaning intentions of a few, and 2-never underestimate the blind stupidity of people in large groups.

Basically an oversized ape is taken from the only habitat he's ever known and where he's felt safe all his life and thrown into a fake man-made enclosure on the other side of the world for tourists to gawk at and the media to milk until the next flavour of the month presents itself.

During a gala event where Joe is to be displayed in front of high society types, things take a turn for the worse and as usual Joe, like any other wild animal, reacts violently, however as several people with more money than sense got hurt in the ensuing melee the typical consensus is to lock him away to be euthanized.

To wrap up, Joe is freed from prison, the poachers trying to kill him are defeated, Joe redeems himself by saving a child from a fire and he ends up roaming free again back in Africa. It's a very syrupy and artificial and kids won't see that it's full of holes but this just isn't enjoyable on any level for anyone over 10 years old.

There's lots of silly and deliberate attempts at generating cheap laughs whether it be a sports car getting trampled or a Mercedes getting trashed. It's all very obvious as is the teary premature death of Joe, which even blind Freddy could see coming. A box office bomb if ever there was and it's not hard to see why. A total miss.

A Nutshell Review: Mighty Joe Young
DICK STEEL18 November 2005
Merian C. Cooper came up with the story of King Kong first, about the 40 foot giant ape which was discovered in Skull Island, then brought back to New York to wreck havoc. He too dreamt up the story of a smaller ape - 15 foot, who lives with his human protector, and brought back to the USofA where he wrecks minor havoc against poachers.

Joe is a gorilla whose parent died under the hands of poachers. Being the target, he in turn was protected and raised by the Young family, namely Jill Young, who lost her mother too on that same faithful night. 12 years later, Jill (Charlize Theron) have to find safe haven for her ape friend Joe, whose day out attacking explorer/researcher Gregg O'Hara (Bill Paxton) brought unwanted attention to itself.

Jill and Gregg form an uneasy alliance as they transport Joe to a man-made habitat in Los Angeles, and the habitat and Joe come under attack from the same poachers 12 years ago, this time wanting revenge.

It's a simpler tale compared to King Kong, but somehow I find the storyline a poor cousin to that of Kong's. It's difficult to live up to classics I suppose, but there are moments enough to elevate the film.

Like the action sequences. The first time we see Joe as an adult gorilla taking on the research team in their jeeps was a sequence to behold. You can see the CGI-ed Joe in its full glory as it gallops(?) with incredible speed and using its wit to overcome its aggressors. The scaling of a ferris wheel felt like a weak homage to Kong's scaling of the Empire State Building. Then again, Joe is about 1/3 the size of Kong, but can it roar as loud too.

Or the moments where Joe actually coos like a baby, when Jill teases him / plays games / sings lullabies. Along the lines of Kong, only a beauty can tame the primal beast.

Mighty Joe Young is a remake of its 1949 debut, which featured a stop-motion animated Joe. And oh, did I mentioned I watched this also because of Charlize Theron? 'Nuff said! Code 3 DVD: bare bones version.

Not surprising...
veda000114 January 1999
Considering the fact that it is a Disney movie, and I had seen the previews, the ending was a given...No surprises there.

In my opinion, there is only one reason to see this movie: the superb performance of Charlize Theron.

An underrated and heartwarming film
rchrdshelt26 August 2006
I've seen this film several times and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it each time. The performances from from Charlize Theron and Bill Paxton are excellent and the Special Effects are tremendous. The film has a relatively straightforward plot, but also has some powerful emotional scenes as well. The film is well written and directed with it ensuring it appeals to children who will not be frightened by Joe. Moreover, this is not a horror film but rather a story of a misunderstood creature that wants to be at peace. Mighty Joe You is one of the better films out there suitable for both children and adults to enjoy and I highly recommended it.

Colourful family fun with large ape
neil-47619 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This remake of Mighty Joe Young updates the story to present day but keeps the same plot beats, and dresses it in state of the art special effects.

The story - misunderstood ape in the city, hunted, but redeems himself by heroic action during calamity - works as well as it did in the original, and is augmented by wicked hunters.

Charlize Theron and Bill Paxton are attractive leads, but the film belongs to Joe. He is achieved by a mix of animatronics and CGI (and, I suspect, the occasional bloke in an ape suit), but he succeeds as a character who displays emotion and engages audience sympathetic.

This bright, colourful film is a charming and exciting family movie.

too dark and depressing for a kid's movie
Smells_Like_Cheese21 November 2006
Thanks to this movie, I am now angry with my friend, she was just raving about this movie and insisted that I borrow it. I asked her if there were any depressing animal moments, she said that I would quickly get over them, well, I have a question... why am I still crying? This movie was just too dark in my opinion and not for kids, it just was too scary and disturbing for my tastes. Which is weird coming from the girl who loves Casino.

Joe is an giant 2,000 pound gorilla who lost his mom when he was a baby, including his lovely human owner, Jill. When Professor Greg comes to see how smart these gorillas are, he convinces Jill to take Joe to the city to show others how smart he is. But of course, you can imagine, Joe gets to the city and meets the man who murdered his and Jill's mother and goes crazy and on a rampage in the city causing his reputation to no more than a vicious animal.

This movie was just too depressing, that's why I don't watch too many animal movies, they usually break my heart. It's just so crazy how animals are treated and I can't stand to watch it, I'm not sure if this movie could be used for entertainment purposes. So, just I guess judge for yourself, but I'm warning you to grab the tissues.
