I Didn't Even Know He Was Gone

An OK entry into the "We've Got a German Shepherd, Let's Make a Rin-Tin-Tin Movie" competition, as Leader the Dog helps newly-blinded Quebecois trapper James Pierce recover his prime furs from dastardly Walter Shumway and thus win the hand of the fair Helen Lynch.

There is some nice photography, including shots of what purport to be the Canadian Rockies, and Leader is a dog with a few nice acting tricks, like looking very shy. Also the whole story is framed in a cute way as the principals show up for a wedding and his old pals ask where he's been -- these are all dogs. This leads us into the story, as outlined above.

The problem, as with many of these animal actor movies, is they didn't get top notch human actors. Oh, Shumway is fine, as is Whitehorse as the comic relief. It's just that James Pierce is not very good. He reacts to going blind like Red Skelton drinking Guzzler's Gin or Lucille Ball demonstrating Vitameatavegemin.

But the rest of the movie is fine, and the print I saw was in pretty good shape.
