Basant (1942) : Brief Review -

An early anti-feminist drama in Bollywood cinema that survived due to luxurious getaway. Basant directed by Amiya Chakrabarty was Highly curved to the men oriented society culture where a woman has to endure the baddism of her husband, no matter how wrong he was. It's not that i would not love to see such stuff made in 1942 but i have known so many woman empowering films made before Basant then i don't understand why Bombay Talkies decided to go back instead of going ahead in filmmaking. Mehboob Khan made an All Time Classic like 'Aurat' which had a woman playing the leading role and smashing all the anti-feminism stored in people's mind and then you get to see a Film like Basant being made after 2 years of that. I am a male audience and if i am thinking too much about it then i can't imagine how woman would react or would have reacted to this film that time. But it was a Record smashing blockbuster which clearly proves that People did accept this film so this disliking of mine over the anti-feminism matter doesn't really mean nothing. Two poor homeless siblings have singing talent but are unable to find a job. When they meet the brother of a theatre owner, things start to change a lot. The heroine marries the brother of the a theatre owner and so she had to quit theatre which later becomes a curse for her. What this storyline follows is a typical arrogant mindset of a male who doesn't want his wife to work in theatre and later abandones her as if she has committed a big crime. Thankfully this brutal and harsh thinking comes to an end with a positive climax and happy ending and Basant ends of fulfilling note. Basant is all about Mumtaz who debuted with this film and the very next year starred in another Record Grosser, 'Kismet'. The music is decent, cinematography is at par and Chakrabarty's direction is fairly good. Overall, Typical and Good but not Great.
