Mr Vallier goes to town
ulicknormanowen16 April 2023
A pirates' treasure is discovered , and the heir is none other than a happy-go-lucky tramp whose nickname is "ma pomme" (slang for "myself") .Overnight he becomes a millionaire and has to meet his family : a snob cousin , and his chic circle who despises that coarse wanderer ; a situation not unlike that of the actor in Duvivier' s "l'homme du jour ";but whereas that latter director's work sometimes verged on drama ,"ma pomme " is pure comedy .

But screenwriter-turned director Marc-Gilbert Sauvajon's unpretentious movie is quite enjoyable ; the vagabond has a gift for repartee when he speaks with this so-called elite ; supporting cast is up to scratch ,notably the always reliable Raymond Bussières , excellent as a head waiter for one day in a restaurant where they already have a mobile phone of sorts .Unlike many movies featuring a chanteur , Chevalier's songs are pleasant (he once covered "yellow submarine"!).Ending a la Charlie Chaplin.
