"Don't you kind of love December..."
utgard1413 November 2014
This cartoon was originally part of Melody Time, an animated anthology of musical cartoons made by Disney. It's a sweet little story about a couple in love at wintertime taking a sleigh ride and playing around on the ice. There's also a very cute rabbit couple. It's got a cozy seasonal vibe to it that I liked. The animation is colorful and lovely to look at. Frances Langford sings the title song and she has a beautiful voice. It's only a few minutes out of your life so really what's the harm in trying it out? If possible, I'd recommend watching it in Melody Time as you get to see many other musical cartoons as well.

No Words, No Problem
Nemo_2413 July 2019
Once Upon A Wintertime is a classic Disney short. I can remember watching the film every Christmas when I was little. The short was featured on a number of Disney holiday releases in the 80s/90s. Part of the Disney magic is being able to capture the attention of viewers and have a sense reliability to characters...even animals. This short, although created early in the Disney Studios history, was able to showcase the talents of the artist......without a word being spoken (minus the song). For all the Disney nerds out there, Once Upon A Wintertime was, in part, a Mary Blair piece.

No one could look at the poster for this film . . .

Warning: Spoilers
. . . and conclude anything other than it is a Dizzy Nature excursion into the land of love alike-s, sometimes denoted by the L-word. However, when actually watching this piece, is seems possible that the androgynous kisser NOT wearing a hoop skirt might be intended as a dude. If so, "he" seems doomed to a frigid fortune, as the flighty ice queen alternately smooches him and then showers him with cold shoulders. This wanton wench may be wearing a half dozen skirts, but as she insists upon skating on the thin ice of reckless oblivion her bottom layering is more likely to snuggle her into the river bed than the honeymoon suite.

Kinda sweet overall

Warning: Spoilers
"Once Upon a Wintertime" is an American 8-minute cartoon from 1948, so this one will have its 70th anniversary next year already. It is a Disney production by Oscar winner Hamilton Luske and apparently this one here is an extract of a full feature film named "Melody Time". It's about a pair of (tiny) humans dancing on the ice and they are joined in here by a whole lot of animals. The looks for this one are pretty good overall and you can see it's from the Golden Age of Animation. Story-wise it is so-so. Cuteness prevails and the more dramatic parts, i.e. the breaking ice, the danger of drowning etc. are not really too memorable. But the music makes up for that I would say. It's not just a good watch, also a good listen. Maybe the kinda lack of a plot kept it from becoming another Oscar nomination for Disney. It's all good though. Quite enjoyable from start to finish I must say. In my opinion, you should see it, preferrable these days during the holidays. Definitely a thumbs-up here.

A short from "Melody Time".
Mightyzebra28 July 2008
This is one of quite a few shorts from "Melody Time" an animated Disney film featuring short animated "episodes". This is the first one - and not the best. It is sweet, well-animated and includes good singing - but it is a bit too silly - and there are other shorts in Melody Time that succeed further than this does.

In this particular one, two lovers, in the wintertime (duh) are riding a carriage to a lake, so that they can skate together. As the two young lovers begin to skate, two rabbit lovers join them and unfortunately, things seem to go wrong between both couples...

To watch this, watch the whole of "Melody Time". As far as I know, it is easily available - and completely worth watching. Enjoy "Once Upon a Wintertime"! :-)

Disney has done a lot better.
planktonrules2 February 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This is the first short that was used to make up the full-length film from Disney, "Melody Time". Following WWII, Disney Studio was a mess--a terrible strike and the war (where many of the workers were drafted and many more were assigned to wartime animation work) decimated the studio and many of the old animators were gone. As a result, Disney did not get back to making traditional animated feature films for several years. In the meantime, their 'full-length' films were really odd compilations of shorts--and of a rather lackluster quality compared to earlier and later work.

The animation style and quality of this short is hardly reminiscent of classic Disney (such as "Snow White" or "Bambi"). Gone are the lovely detailed backgrounds and fine drawn characters. Instead, splashy solid color backgrounds and super-simplistic drawings filled this cartoon--such that it's hard to recognize it as a Disney product.

As for story, it's only fair--and something that seems intended for older audiences. The film has no dialog and has singing by Frances Langford. The story consists of two young lovers cavorting about--ice skating and enjoying the great frozen outdoors. Later, the simplistically drawn lady nearly falls down a simplistic waterfall and is saved by her simplistically drawn boyfriend--then away they zip through the simplistic countryside on a simplistic sleigh. If you haven't guessed, the word for the day is 'simplistic'--a great description of this fair cartoon that is easy to skip.

Sublime vocals from Frances Langford and some lovely animation make this a beautiful short!
TheLittleSongbird24 June 2009
Once Upon a Wintertime is a truly beautiful short, one of my favourites actually. I know that the song takes up most of the 10 minute short, from Melody Time, but that is forgiven as the whole short is very beautiful. My ONLY complaint is that it drags only slightly. The animation is very nice to look at, with gorgeous winter settings, the idea of the couple in the horse-drawn sleigh, was a very good one. This was a fairly christmassy tradition, in the time the short was set, and I confess it is something I've wanted to do for a while now. I liked the couple who go ice skating, and they argue because the man makes fun of her inability to ice skate, and then has to save her when the ice breaks. I also loved the rabbits, the male rabbit was quite funny, and I loved the majesty of the chestnut mares. I think the main merit of the short is the song, which takes the name of the title of the short. A truly beautiful song, with wonderful lyrics, and was sublimely sung by Frances Langford. I don't know about you, but Langford's singing voice slightly reminds me of that of Judy Garland. She was sensitively accompanied by a very angelic choir, that two or three minutes in, have their turn to shine. Overall, a beautiful Christmas short, very imaginative and fairly idealistic, with a wonderfully romantic ending. 9/10 Bethany Cox

Classic Christmas Cartoon
vanillarose2208 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I grew up watching this as a part of the 1983 Disney Channel Christmas special. I wasn't born until 1989, but my parents taped it back when it aired, along with several other classic Christmas cartoons, and we watched the tape every Christmas. I always enjoyed this cartoon. It has a charming and old-fashioned Christmas feel with the horse-drawn sleigh, clothing, and music. I also love the interplay of the animals, almost more than the people. While the idea of the females having a temper tantrum and then fainting at the sight of danger is a terrible, tired stereotype, if you understand the context of the times in which this cartoon was made, you can overlook it. Once Upon a Wintertime will always be a Christmas Classic.

Walt Disney's Once Upon a Wintertime provides wonderful animated winter settings throughout
tavm5 December 2008
Originally released as part of the omnibus animated feature Melody Time (1948), Walt Disney made Once Upon a Wintertime as a separate short subject five years later. With the score consisting entirely of Francis Langford's rendition of the title song with a very long instrumental bridge, we watch a young adult couple riding on a sleigh accompanied by a similar male and female rabbit one down below on the blades. Then some little argument ensues before some thrilling thin ice danger brings everyone to a crescendo before the romantic happy ending ensues. Beautiful animation throughout and one gets that warm feeling nearly the entire time despite the cold setting. Well worth seeking out on YouTube which is where I watched this when I linked from the Saturday Morning Blog.
