Yikes!
BitchBag30 December 1998
I liked this movie better a when I saw it a few years ago.... when it was called "Clerks". Did this guy just cut and paste a whole bunch of scenes that didn't make the cut from some stupid John Hughes movies and steal some bad actors from Kevin Smith? Oh yeah....I really believed the whole boy meets 40 year old fat girl scene at the convenience store - love at first puke!

A fine first film

Made on a low budget, indie film is well written, witty and mature, with a cast brimming with potential.

Great Movie. Classic low-budget movie.
Fienddom15 June 1999
I was an extra in this movie, so I have a unique perspective on the production and making of this movie. It was a great look into college life, and relationships between two friends. Everybody should see it.

Real Bad
Spunky-1024 December 1998
This one's a stinker, folks. Luckily, it won't be coming soon to a theater near you -- I was unlucky enough to visit what I think was the first, last and only showing at an otherwise pleasant Long Island film festival.

Wow -- this is one awful film.
underdog-323 December 1998
I have seen many, many bad movies. But this one is unique among them, for it is far worse than any of the others. I would not even let my dogs watch this film.

The writing: Really, really bad. The acting: Pretty dang bad. The plot: What plot? The direction: Did it have a director? Or did some people just set up a camera and prance around in front of it, spewing inanities?

In short, it is really hard to give a truly bad review to an independent film, because one really wants that end of the industry to succeed. Who knows where the next Scorcese will come from? Certainly not here.

Craig is Good!
Ghost-1916 January 1999
Yes! This movies is good! Craig said he was trying to capture my generation, his generation. He succeeds!!! I am like his movie! His movie is like me!!!!

Everyone should see Craig's movie, but it doesn't play anywhere so maybe you can't. Since you can't, I can tell you how good this movie is. I relate to all the characters, they are all the same like me! Their issues are Aids and school and parties, and these are the most important issues for GENERATION-X. He got many good bands to play on his soundtrack, I hope and can buy it and listen to it. I want to buy this movie!!!

Thanks to Craig for letting me see his movies! I think all his friends and everyone who supports independence films should do like he says and support him here!

Craig says the people who write bad things about the movie are against him personally! I agree! The movie is great, everyone must like it!

Thank You Craig Kestel!!!

Awesome Film

I saw Kegless several times. I was even able to read the script. I think this film has tremendous substance that includes a college kid's outlook on life and the fears of life, growing up, friends and careers with a humor that certainly doesn't go unnoticed. This film was an honest and intelligent assesment regarding real life experiences that I was able to relate to. The writing was at its best during the most crucial points in the movie. Kestel's style of writing is real and honest, almost in your face! I look at this film as an exhausting and tireless effort on the part of the entire cast and production. I am honored that this film represents myself and the generation in which I've grown up in. This is a MUST SEE!!!! Continued success to Kestel and his group!!!!

a great beginning
filmy-222 January 1999
After viewing Kegless at the Long Island Film Festival, I came away with a couple of viewpoints. My first was "wow, this was made for $11,000 dollars? (as it was described) and my second was that, although not perfect, it is a great beginning for a young filmmaker and his young cast. The writing at many times is impressive and generation oriented while still staying in touch with the generation, which usually is lost in the corporate scheme of things. Being an independent film, it is easier to do what you want, but the drawbacks result in lack of technology in post-production. This script with a couple-hundred-thousand dollar budget would be an underground surprise in the film industry. The acting, although lacking in a couple areas, was strong in the lead character played by Adam Bjelland and most of the supporting characters, with standout performances by Ross MacIntire and Dave Campbell. Overall, a movie better than half the big-budget drivel shoveled into theaters daily.

Kegless is a very good film and a prelude to a great career.
NY Film8 January 1999
Kegless is the epitome of a low-budget film, mainly because that is exactly what it is. The talent here certainly lies within the script. The plot? Simple and very easily identifiable. It is the "second coming of age" - when one gets out of college and is forced to deal with the real world with all of its possibilities and anxieties. As with most art forms there is a lot of raw emotion stemming from anxiety and depression in this film. The context of these emotions is easily understandable for anyone unsure about their future when college is over. What is worse is his fear of having contracted AIDS. The film in no way ties all of the conflicts into a neat package in the end but rather gives the main character back his hope in the possibilities his future might offer. I read this is Mr. Kestel's very first movie and he brought home an award from the LI Film Festival. That is quite an accomplishment for a first venture into a cut-throat and bitter industry. I encourage him to do more work and to listen to the professional panel and viewer majority who gave him the LIFF award and to disreguard the unconstructive critique of anonymous posters.

Worth seeing
Belial-45 January 1999
I saw this film at the LI film festival, which I believe it won an award.

The movie was worth while watching and enjoyable. The acting was decent considering it was all unknowns, the writing was good as well. The plot which started off as a comedy, turns quickly into a serious drama, which I thought was done well.

This film was excellent considering the small budget.

Solid first effort, especially considering the $11,000 budget.
lopsided29 December 1998
I am quite sure the previous bad comments are coming from someone who for whatever reason doesn't like the filmmaker personally. I saw the film at the IFFM and found it to be a well-written, entertaining, if slightly rough around the edges coming of age film. In fact, I think I remember seeing in the publicity materials that it had won several film festival awards.

I'm looking forward to seeing the next effort from this filmmaker. With a little more maturity, he could be something special.

Flawed, but shows promise
FrankJR28 December 1998
One of the biggest flaws of first-time filmmakers is that they very often simply put their raw emotions on screen without any context. For example, if the filmmaker is depressed over say, feeling lonely or breaking up with his girlfriend, he will then make a film about a person who is depressed over being lonely or breaking up with his girlfriend. But that's nothing new. We've all been depressed or lonely at one time or another, and simply putting these emotions on screen does not make it art. What we need is a context for those emotions: is the character lonely because of something he is or does, and does he realize that by the film's end? Does the character's depression help him realize something about his life? That's the main flaw with KEGLESS: the writer/director manages to put a lot of raw emotion on the screen, dealing with realistic and pertinent problems. (What will become of me after school? Will I ever meet anyone else?) But that's all he does. Those emotions are not shaped into anything. Despite being in a fight with his best friend at the end, the character doesn't really learn anything from it, and everything is sort of tied up too neatly at the end. (He gets the job, and the new girl, and keeps the best friend.) However, the emotions are real.
