Three men go into the jungle in search of a legendary gold field. They come out with the proof: eight thousand pounds worth of gold, and more left lying about. They and their backer, Hugh Miller, are going to be rich. But Miller says they're wrong. He's going to be very rich. They have no record of his agreeing to split with them. Unless they deposit the gold to his account immediately, in fact, he'll have them thrown in jail.
So they decide to kill him: John Stuart, Garry Marsh, and Michael Shepley. Rather, they decide that one of them will kill them, the one who is dealt the Ace of Spades from the green pack; the other two won't know who the murderer is, and all three will share the riches.
Miller is shot that night. And the police come and investigate. While they do so, the three quarrel.
So a murder is committed and the audience has three suspects. It's a nice little mystery, based on Edgar Wallace's last play. The production is a cheap one: two sets, five actors, including J.H. Roberts as the doctor Miller insists on having about, Aileen Marson as Roberts' daughter, and the policeman. The copy I looked at was a Pathescope cutdown, 43 minutes instead of the original 72; the production company, British Lion, had its negatives and theatrical release copies destroyed during the War. Nonetheless, it manages the story very nicely.
