A surreal journey through life and love
pauluswiggus25 August 2021
Rowing Across the Atlantic tells the story of a couple who leave New York in 1907 and set out across the Atlantic Ocean in a rowboat. Their expedition is celebrated and covered widely by the media. To begin with the journey is calm and romantic, with the couple frequently playing music together to pass the time. Later they witness the sinking of the Titanic, and from then on things turn increasingly dark and surreal. Both characters maintain journals of the journey and this shared narration shows their vastly different perspectives on events and their relationship. Ultimately, it is the development of their relationship over their decades at sea that forms the focus of the film.

The animation is striking, utilising a cut-out technique and drawing artistic inspiration from 1920s modernist movements including cubism and surrealism.

This is a beautiful animation that tells a complex and moving story. Well worth seeing.
