The biters bit
dbdumonteil7 August 2008
Richard Pottier had a good sense of humor which showed in the best of his comedies :"Fanfare d'Amour" (remade as "some like it hot" ) "Caroline Chérie" and this "L'Aventure Commence Demain" which is much fun to watch.

Two crooks team up : a buck (Raymond Rouleau) ,the "brain" and a two-bit femme fatale ,a cross between Joan Crawford and Rita Hayworth ,complete with cigarette holder (Isa Miranda) ,the "charm".

They take a wealthy man as their target;they begin with a jewel then begin to work on a larger scale when they learn the greybeard owns a map which gives the site of of an elephant's graveyard (which means plenty of ivory ).Of course nothing happens as they expected .

Funny lines, very good acting and plenty of unexpected twists.

Warning: Spoilers
Richard Pottier, all but forgotten today, was as fine a journeyman as any director working in French cinema - he was actually born in what used to be known as the Austro-Hungarian empire in the middle of the twentieth century; he worked with Prevert, Fernandel and directed no less than five movies for Continental during the occupation and was at home in most types of film making him something of a small-scale Michael Curtiz. This hugely enjoyable entry would hardly claim to be original - two film flam men team up with a femme fatale to take a rich pigeon and forget their original goal when they realise he possesses a 'treasure' map which, if interpreted correctly will leave them up to their asses in ivory - but, as is so often the case, it's all in the wrists and when the wrists are on hands belonging to Isa Miranda we're in relatively safe hands.

What a pleasant surprise with that cat and mouse story around a femme fatale, a thief and a rich man. Well directed, the three actors are perfect, with lot of smooth energy. The dialogues are a constant pleasure, written for two gentlemen (Raymond Rouleau and André Luguet) and a seducing woman (Isa Miranda). And lot of twists. A very nice french comedy, between Lubitsch and Ophüls.
