Clever, well directed, well cast and well acted

A woman tells the story of sleeping beauty to her child. However this version is based on how the woman met her lesbian partner (and co-mother). The woman (Heather) tells of how she met her partner (Clea) despite longing after the woman she thought was her sleeping princess.

I have seen one other Jamie Babbit short and wasn't too impressed by that. Like this, that dealt with a lesbian couple but I found it both lazy and unreadable - so I didn't have high hopes for this. However I was pleasantly surprised to find that arty pretension and symbolism wasn't used to make us thing she's clever. Instead it's a clever retelling of a love story from a lesbian point of view. Sure it has little quirks thrown into the mix (the dead body album cover shoot) but these don't take away from the core.

The story is well written and is delivered in amusing fairy tale fashion - using chapter-type art cards at several points. Some of the fairytale lighting etc doesn't quite work and I felt that Babbit should have not mixed reality and fairytale once the story started in earnest, but it still works. The dialogue is good and the story is well told.

The cast is pretty good considering it's a short - some good up and coming stars. Lassez is suitably shy as the girl chasing this princess that doesn't want her and Mitchell is pretty good as the bitchy, self centred Cindy (not bad for a Neighbours actress!). DuVall has a small role but is instantly recognisable and is pretty good. They all deliver the dialogue well and are totally convincing in their roles.

Overall this is charming and amusingly witty. It presents the lesbian love story without any air of exploitation or sensationalism that usually accompanies any shots of girls kissing. Well written and well directed - I will check out more Babbit stuff as a result of this.

Profits from the famous title reference, but the execution is rather shoddy Warning: Spoilers
"Sleeping Beauties" is an American English-language live action short film from 1999, so two more years only and this one has its 20th anniversary. Maybe it already does when you read this review. The writer and director is Jamie Babbit and she is still making films today. Actually, this work here is from very early in her career and she was under the age of 30 when she made it. The cast includes a handful of names, of which some have even reached a star level where you could say that you will recognize their faces or names, most of all Rose McGowan perhaps. It is basically a little comedy about a lesbian mom telling her daughter how she met her significant other a while ago and which obstacles (i.e. mean people) they had to overcome in order to be united. But like I said, it is all comedy, nothing too serious really, no major homophobia or anything. Still, the execution is not too convincing. I felt it wasn't funny enough, even for such a brief film and the story telling aspect was a bit of a letdown. This is especially disappointing as Babbit is a lesbian herself, so I expected really more depth and insight here given this was made by somebody directly affected with the subject. When it comes to gay-themed films, there are definitely more of these about relationships between 2 men than about 2 women, so here we have the latter for a change. Quite a shame, they still did not come up with a convincing work. I give it a thumbs-down. Not recommended, even if admittedly it is also not really that bad. Just as harmless as it is pointless would be a good way to summarize it.

Really enjoyed

This short is one of my favourites. The fairy tale theme works well with some classic lighting. A really sweet lesbian comedy with some great acting. Not only Clea Duvall but also up and coming Radha Mitchell, someone to look out for. I thoroughly recommend.
