PISHADOO is an odd little film about a kid who grows up KNOWING he will one day be a barber. While other kids collect baseball cards or skate board, this kid is thrilled with the idea of cutting hair--following dad to work and helping out even when he's little. And, in this odd family, there is a long tradition of barbers. So, for his birthday, instead of normal toys, he's thrilled to get barber's equipment! Years pass and now he's old enough to learn to cut hair. Instead of going to barber's college, he learns from his Old Man--the master. Sadly, however, he turns out to be a horrible barber and just butchers everyone's hair. This creates a lot of anxiety and tension, though in the end, the boy is able to finally find his place in life--both living his dreams AND doing what he loves.
The film gets very high marks for setting the proper mood. There is a wonderful collection of "faces"--supporting actors who have lots of character. Additionally, film techniques and music really help to create a near-perfect little film.
I saw this short film on a compilation disk (Shorts!: Vol. 1) and it might just be the best film among them. That's saying a lot because there are a lot of other films. This one stands out because although the subject matter is a bit mundane, it is handled so beautifully that the story just comes alive. Wonderful writing and direction as well as acting make this story a keeper AND I sure wish they'd make more films. With experience, who knows how good they'll be! PS--Look at the dad. Doesn't he look like a slightly taller and skinnier version of Victor Mature?! What a mug!
