Plot Summary

After Charles' return from his journey to Brittany, Queen Isabel and her admirer, the Duke of Orleans, immediately plan his destruction. They give a masked ball, during which a dastardly attempt is made upon the king's life. This, while proving unsuccessful, causes him to lose his reason. Incensed at the villainy of the plot, the followers of Charles have the wicked duke assassinated. The loss of her chief ally drives Isabel to desperation, and finally revenges herself by persuading her weak-minded husband to sign away the succession, thus giving the throne to Henry VI of England. When everything seems to be favorable to the queen's plans, and Henry VI is about to be crowned, the followers of Charles put to rout the coronation procession, and gloriously preserve the throne of France.
