'If It's A Man, Hang Up' opens Thriller's fifth series with a slow-burning tale of voyeurism and obsession.

The ravishing Carol Lynley stars as Suzy Martin, a stylish and beautiful model who leaves in a salubrious apartment with her dog and no man. A series of upsetting calls to her telephone commence - taking a variety of forms; silence, heavy breathing, toneless invocations of her name; whispered sweet nothings... To complicate matters and make life difficult for Suzy and the helpful police it seems that there a few possible suspects namely - Terry (her photographer), Greg (her part-time lover) and Murchison (the somewhat sinister caretaker)

Two further male characters which make their way into Suzy's web. The first is Terry's Sicilian friend Bruno Varella (aka Bruno 'Something') played to perfection by Tom Conti while the second is the over helpful policeman Hal (the younger of a pair of friendly bobbies) who reckons that the suspect can be caught if he and Suzy join forces.

As if this backdrop of harassment wasn't enough things take a turn for the worse when Suzy's brother Peter is killed by a hit and run driver following a night spent in his sister's flat. The finger points to the mysterious caller and the suspense is upped when Hal persuades Suzy to spend the weekend at his remote country cottage.

The climax is very dramatic with an inventive twist. Caril Lynley would go on to keep the suspense anthology torch burning with a excellent performance in Hammer House Of Mystery And Suspense's 'In Possession' nine years later.

But back to 1975 - 'If It's A Man, Hang Up' is a quality episode of Thriller that will keep you engrossed.

A Thriller and a half.
Sleepin_Dragon23 May 2018
After a fairly disappointing fourth series, Series five opens with an absolute classic, If it's a man, hang up is a show of sheer quality, a fantastic script, great characters, clever twists and tension in abundance.

I hate to say it, after the magic of Series 3, to the fairly average fourth series I thought Thriller had become a spent force, with its best days very much behind it, how wrong was I. This episode has every single quality required in a thriller, a likeable central character, Suzy isn't just beautiful, but Lynley's excellent, sympathetic performance also means you care about what happens to her. There are a multitude of suspects, including a jealous ex lover, a wannabe lover, a devoted admirer, a slightly obsessed caretaker, and the wannabe lover's wannabe lover. It's the complexity of characters that makes this episode so delicious.

Standout characters aside from Suzy include, Greg Miles, played by the vocally wonderful Gerald Harper, Tom Conti's Bruno Something, Betty (played by a young and striking Sue Holderness, and of course David Gwillim's slightly quirky Henry.

At no point did I know who was tormenting poor Suzy, just when I thought I was making sense of it, the rug was pulled from underneath my feet. It doesn't let up until the last minute.

Up there with Coffin for the bride. 10/10

A lovely young model is terrorized by a sicko, black-gloved peeping tom who specializes in obscene telephone calls.

Shot on videotape, this is actually a very stylish and suspenseful made for television horror flick. Carol Lynley is magnificent as the tormented heroine, and there's a truly effective surprise ending that will knock you out of your seat!

Another American Model
kris-gray24 April 2018
Despite the over abundance of American leads this was an excellent series in it's day, not all the episodes stand the test of time but this one does. Featuring an ex squeeze of David Frost's, Carol Lynley, being terrorised by a spooky, heavy breathing caller who gets more sinister with every call.

Sadly, and this is no fault of the writers, I guessed who it was the moment he appears on the screen. I wont say why as this might give the game away to others. All I can say is that it would be less obvious back in the day.

The tension mounts and there is a top performance from a young Tom Conti with Adam Adamant/Hadleigh actor Gerald Harper playing the same kind of character. It's still very watchable even after forty years and despite the naff sets.

Who Can She Trust??

Warning: Spoilers
In this day and age of "connect the dots" plots and one dimensional characterisation, it is amazing to view "Thriller" and find that it barely put a foot wrong through 6 series. This episode from series 5 is no exception. Nowadays crank phone calls seem to be all part of daily life but in 1975 they were sufficiently unusual to be very, very scary. As was often the case, because "Thriller" was trying to appeal to the American market, they often used popular U.S. stars of the day and Carol Linley made a beautiful and stylish model, Suzy Martin, who lives alone in London with her dog Toby.

Scatterbrained model, Suzy is being harassed by crank calls (of the heavy breathing variety). After a while the caller communicates - only to tell her that she is "mine alone"!!! Her manager (Gerald Harper) is beaten as he tries to leave her unit - by someone with silky, longish hair. You guessed it!! - everyone in the show has long silky hair, even the girls!!! - except the two policemen. Yes, Suzy has done the sensible thing and called "the fuzz" - they both seem normal enough or do they??? When they make a follow up call the next day, ditzy Suzy can't even remember why she called them - oh yes!, that's right, the crank calls that have been scaring her half to death!!

Seriously though, this is an excellent episode of "Thriller" - one of the young policemen has a real crush on Suzy and persuades her that if she will only follow his instructions - cutting all her friends from her life and even putting her little dog in a kennel - the suspect will be caught. Don't do it Suzy!!! But Suzy has now fallen for Henry (David Gwillim), who wants to be called Hal and has a horrible scar across his cheek that he doesn't want to talk about. She blithely follows him to a creepy farm house. But wait!! there's more!! - an odd caretaker, who has made a shrine to Suzy in his room. Played by John Cater, who played Starr in "The Duchess of Duke Street" - remember him, he was the doorman with the little Jack Russell terrier named Fred.

As one of the other reviewers said, you will absolutely never guess the killer - you will even be guessing right to the end!!!

Highly, Highly Recommended.

The best episode .
flotte1 September 2001
I just love " Thriller " . There has never been a tv-show , with so many qualities . It was very scarry , had great eerie atmosphere, superb acting , and above all was the setting's , and the story's where always very clever , the brilliant Brian Clemens wrote it. I recently read , that Brian's favorite show , was not " Thriller ", but the highly overrated " The Avengers " . " If It's A Man Hang Up " , has it all . The suspense is precent all the time , and there is many great plot-twists . I thought Tom Conti , did a very good job as one of the many suspects . And if you see this episode , you will have problems guessing the killer . I love the way this show is paced , it is very slow . And you have time to care about the story , and the characters . No MTV-cutting here . I heard that "A&E" , is planning to release " Thriller " on DVD. That is big news , and i hope they will do it soon, and they should bring out all 43 episodes . All 43 episodes deserve to come out on DVD .

So Many Twists
amylovestv21 April 2023
As a fan of the great Carol Lynley, I've been making my way through her performances and chose this episode of "Thriller" to watch today. I didn't have high hopes. I had never seen an episode of the show before and from the pictures, it seemed like it was going to be a cheap production, but I was very wrong! Not only was it well paced and well written but I enjoyed the different creative camera angles. Carol is amazing as the frightened model Suzy Martin and rightfully so. Even though I had seen the spoiler for the episode, I was still shocked at the end. Highly recommend this episode for any Carol or suspense fans.

Plot twists galore
SPLeo25 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is worth watching for all the plot twists that tumble over you in the last few minutes.

There is a clever red herring at around the 10-minute mark, when we hear the telephone voice of the mystery criminal. We recognise which character it is at once because the actor became famous subsequently, which made his distinctive voice so obvious.

But has the director asked this actor to record the speech to direct our attention mischievously away from the real villain?

Suzyyyyy...... but help, what IS Constable Veneer's car?
mbayley-7683111 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Here we have an excellent plot, a great cast, competent filming and just a hint of creepiness. Lovely Suzy Martin is terrorised by a telephone perve. Just the sort of incident the Telecommunications Act 2003 was meant to address. It didn't, and it has been misused by police and courts ever since. However, that's another freedom rant altogether.

The plot follows the gorgeous Suzy through a series of incidents, culminating in a set piece encounter with several suspects, and of course that swine Clements leads us astray again and again. The climax is well done and we are left with the feeling that, once again, Thriller has lived up to its name.

Tom Conti portrays a well-mannered Sicilian with suave aplomb.

Gerald Harpers character Greg Miles is delightfully over the top.

My request for help in regard to the car used by Constable Venner may appear trite but, as a long standing owner and player of the excellent Network box set, every time I watch 'If it's a man, hang up' I try to identify the obvious BL ADO 18 derivative. Help!
