Rather Dated but Still Interesting

A look at modern pharmaceutical medications as they developed from the shaman rituals of ancient times and the travelling snake-oil salesmen of the last century. No mention is made of the behemoth forces that Big Pharma now marshals around the world and over governments.

As an interesting cultural sidelight, the children shown recovering from tuberculosis are almost all indigenous in their cultural background. These populations suffered quite badly from this disease, as anyone who has seen the film The Snow Walker can testify. But the real point is that this was most likely to have been filmed at a residential school, where indigenous children were sent after they were taken from their families, forbidden to speak their own language, given uniform haircuts and clothing (as can be seen) and basically, forced to become as 'white' as they could be. This policy, which was not officially abandoned until the 1990s, was one of the worst cases of cultural genocide in Canadian history.
