Not a Showstopper
boblipton16 March 2019
The mortgage holder wants to repossess the place, but the actors have arrived, as they do every year, and room and board s bring in money. When it turns out that the town hall has burnt down, Beatrice LaPlante says to clean up the barn and they'll put on the show there.

Hal Roach was always on the lookout for new stars to build comedy series around. He had already split off Snub Pollard from the Harold Lloyd comedies, and was experimenting with various actors to play Lloyd-type roles in one-reelers; his eventual star would be Charley Chase. Comediennes like Gale Henry and Alice Howell were carrying their own series. He tried out Miss LaPlante in half a dozen shorts in 1920 and 1921.

It's a surprisingly rural comedy from Roach. Usually his series were more urban, so he didn't have to wander far from the studio. The result is well-timed but unremarkable.
