Dance Fool, Dance

The betting on the dance marathon calls for Glen Cavender to win, but the news that a champion dancer called Hot Foot makes his mob go to the train to toss him off. However, when Bobby Dunn gets off, he is mistaken for Mr. Foot and tries to win the $500 prize.

It's an increasingly chaotic movie as Dunn falls down a lot, avoids being brained by a safe and deals with banana peels and holes in the sidewalk, all the standards of slapstick comedy. He handles them competently but nothing too brilliant, in this typical states rights offering.

Enjoyable, though fo.r an early comedy it makes even less sense than usual.

The story is about a dance marathon. Back in the 1920s, such contests were common...and couples would dance until only one couple remained. This would take days or even weeks and the couples did get some short periodic breaks.

Marathon Mike is the villain in this one. He plans on winning the dance contest but learns that a guy nicknamed 'Hot Foot' will be entering it as well...so Mike sends his henchmen to the train to meet Hot Foot...and toss him off! However, the folks who arranged for Hot Foot to come to the dance contest mistakenly think a bum (Bobby Dunn) is Hot Foot...and weird complications arise. Once the dance contest starts, the film becomes incredibly strange and surreal. Don't fret...it will eventually all make sense by the end.

While I noticed no laugh out loud moments, this was a cute and enjoyable silent short. Not brilliant...but very watchable.

By the way, if you watch this one, you might notice Bobby dancing by a door of an office that says 'Monkey Gland Specialist'. Believe it or not, in the 1920s some quack doctors were implanting monkey testicles into people in order to supposedly give them long life and vitality!! This is nutty...but true.
