"Mad Max: Fury Road" is one of the best movies of all time — according to /Film — a masterpiece of action cinema and a masterclass in visual storytelling. It is also a bit of a live-action cartoon. Like the best live-action directors, George Miller pulls inspiration from "Looney Tunes" as much as he does live-action movies in making his post-apocalyptic epic, with a sense of logic, physics, pacing, and fun that feels more outlandish than grounded.
But before the movie came out and became a big hit and an Oscar winner, it went through development hell for literal decades, only to go through actual hell during filming. Development took so long and suffered so many setbacks that Miller looked at alternatives to "Fury Road," including telling a completely different story in animated form. Indeed, we know that in 2009 — between two "Happy Feet" movies — Miller considered making an R-rated 3D "Mad Max" anime instead,...

I'm not blowing any minds by saying that "Avatar: The Last Airbender" took a lot of influence from anime. The characters are drawn in a way that they'd look right at home in an anime, but sometimes, the series' influences manifested more specifically. For instance, the season 1 spirit Hei Bai was inspired by the monstrous Angels from the classic mecha anime "Neon Genesis Evangelion." Jet, the anti-heroic leader of the Freedom Fighters, is likewise modeled on Spike Spiegel from "Cowboy Bebop" (and they share similar "unclear" death scenes). Since "Avatar" aired on Nickelodeon, Jet chews on a wheat thread instead of cigarettes like Spike.
These anime allusions aren't limited to supporting characters, either. In the season 3 episode "Nightmares and Daydreams," our hero — Avatar Aang — imagines himself facing the worst of the worst — Fire Lord Ozai. Neither hero nor villain are wearing their usual threads and across the dreams, they change appearance.

Sometimes, it takes an outsider’s point of view to reveal the peculiarities of traditional belief systems – especially when it comes to religion. This is likely why so many people are fascinated with Japanese artists that incorporate Western religion into their work. From the apocalypse of Neon Genesis Evangelion to the pacifism behind Trigun, there’s a long history of anime and manga borrowing from Christian imagery and beliefs in order to tell engaging stories.

Following in the footsteps of the original “Trigun”, a title which the creator of the manga series has described as ‘really excellent' is not exactly easy. Nevertheless, Toho producer Katsuhiro Takei decided to take on the task, coming up with a re-release of the series, which focuses, however, more on the past of Vash, and thus, essentially functions as a kind of prequel for the original series, although the story line does stray away from the canon.

"Vinland Saga," one of the best shows of 2019, is finally back with new episodes, and ... it feels like a completely different anime. Truly, if you watch the first season and then expect the new episodes to remain an action-packed, blood-soaking, bones-breaking, skull-crushing show about Vikings just massacring people in battle (and outside of battle too) with over-the-top feats of strength, like one dude just using a giant tree trunk like a baseball bat, you might be shocked. "Vinland Sag" has become a rather slow and meditative drama mostly set at a farm.
Likewise, the little edge-lord kid we saw grow from a wide-eyed brat to a merciless killing machine has gone from a blond Levi Ackerman to a slave working at a farm, with his biggest preoccupation being clearing a field and plowing it rather than not being stabbed to death. Not to say the series lacks violence or fights,...

After a gangbuster fall season full of spectacular anime (many of which made it to our list of best shows of the year overall), 2023 is starting with a bit of a quiet winter season. We had some big premieres from acclaimed animators and exciting new original anime, but many were plagued by production issues that killed all momentum.
Still, there were some leftover fall shows that shone bright, a highly-anticipated returning anime that delivered a stellar season, some surprising anime-related drops, and some funny new comedies that made an otherwise lackluster season still rather entertaining.

Voice actor Johnny Yong Bosch is going back to his roots. In a tweet from Crunchyroll, the voice actor confirmed that he will be reprising his role as Vash the Stampede in the soon-to-come English dub of "Trigun: Stampede." Said dub will be arriving on January 21, 2023, a mere two weeks after the premiere of "Stampede" this past January 7.
Yong Bosch is a prolific voice actor and Vash in the original "Trigun" anime was his very first voice-over role. He'd acted before, most famously as Adam Park (the second Black Ranger) in "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers." However, during an Adr session, a producer decided he had a "hero's voice" and asked him to audition for animated roles. A few weeks later, he was voicing Vash. How in tarnation can a doofus commit crimes and destruction that warrant a 60 billion bounty on his head or snag the outlaw title of "The Humanoid Typhoon"? For those who have seen the 1998 "Trigun" space western anime by Madhouse, the question is the running gag. Though the grander and more dramatic question has been, "How much longer can said gunslinger doofus cling to his pacifist no-killing ideals"? In a dog-eats-dog Wild West on a planetary desert in the future, the 26-episode anime, adapting Yasuhiro Nightow's manga, held that question till the end.

There is no shortage of foundational anime series that have influenced the medium in crucial ways and Yatsuhiro Nightow’s Trigun stands out as a landmark action series from the 1990s. Trigun resonated strongly with both its native Japanese audience as well as North American crowds thanks to its prominent airplay on Cartoon Network’s Toonami anime block. Trigun is a powerful genre blend of Western and science fiction sensibilities that introduced audiences to Vash the Stampede and his increasingly heightened acts of gunplay. A standalone Trigun movie reignited the fandom’s passion in 2010, but it’s otherwise been nearly 25 years since the anime went off the air.
Studio Orange, the accomplished animation studio that’s responsible for Beastars and Land of the Lustrous, have passionately reinvented Trigun for modern audiences with Trigun Stampede. Studio Orange’s signature CG style beautifully translates this franchise’s hyperbolized hijinks and Vash the Stampede has never looked better.

Trigun Stampede Episode 1
“I’m really not much of a fighter….”
There are endless anime series that feature hyperbolized action and aloof heroes, but Trigun is a very special piece of ’90s action anime that the genre remains incredibly indebted towards. Trigun’s stamp remains on many series, yet it’s fallen into obscurity over the past few decades. For many anime fans in the 1990s, Trigun was synonymous with genre-bending western gunplay just like how Cowboy Bebop was for bounty hunter space operas. The prospect of a Trigun remake/reboot that introduces a new generation of audiences to Vash the Stampede’s heroic adventures seems like a no-brainer. However, in the decades that have passed since Trigun’s conclusion, action anime have evolved in bold ways and it’s...

Sony Pictures’ anime specialty streamer Crunchyroll has lined up a remake of the anime series Trigun, based on the cult manga by Yasuhiro Nightow.

Sony Pictures’ Crunchyroll anime streaming service has ordered a remake of the anime series “Trigun,” based on a popular manga series by Yasuhiro Nightow.
“Trigun Stampede” will be produced in Japan by animation studio Orange and Toho. Details about the series are set to be unveiled July 2 during Anime Expo 2022 in downtown Los Angeles.
The series is based on the popular action manga series by Yasuhiro Nightow that “follows the story of Vash the Stampede, a legendary gunman and a pacifist with a bounty on his head,” according to Crunchyroll. It was produced as an anime series “Trigun” in 1998. In 2010, it was adapted as a feature film, “Trigun: Badlands Rumble,” from director Satoshi Nishimura and studio Madhouse.
Nightow and producers of the new series slated to appear on stage to discuss “Trigun Stampede.” Panelists, according to Crunchyroll, will include designer Kouji Tajima, Orange producers Kiyotaka Waki and Yoshihiro Watanabe and Toho’s Katsuhiro Takei.

Imagine if you will… It’s a Tuesday night with nothing to do. There you are, sitting on your couch, flipping through channel after channel of mindless drivel. “Is there nothing Good on these days?!” you ask yourself. So in an act of desperation you flip your favorite VOD service on (or open your local video rental catalog) and marvel at the endless hours of entertainment. What to watch? Comedy, Drama? Television series? Feature Film? Who has the time play TV roulette?! Nobody, That’S Who! So in an act of kindness, I lay before you the ten best anime series of yesteryear (in no particular order) for you to burn your eyeballs with during those slow weekday nights! And let’s face it… If your already reading this, What Else would you be doing on a weekday night? Hmm?

Sneak Peek the new poster supporting director Satoshi Nishimura's animated feature, "Trigun: Badlands Rumble", based on the "Trigun" manga comics, written by Yasuhiro Nightow :
"...in a town surrounded by quicksand, an outlaw from the past of 'Vash the Stampede' has resurfaced after twenty years. His name is 'Gasback' - and he's looking to cause a little trouble.
"It seems Gasback has a serious beef with the town's mayor, who's paying dozens of bounty hunters to protect his turf. One of those hired guns is a beautiful woman with a vendetta against Gasback. Will she get a shot at revenge? Maybe, if she can get through Gasback's bodyguard, 'Wolfwood'. And what's Vash got to do with this mess? Nothing much - except for the fact that he personally set off the entire chain of events two decades ago..."

Created by: Eric Kripke.
Directors: Shigeyuki Miya, and Atsuko Ishizuka.
Executive Producer: Masao Maruyama.
Character Designer: Takahiro Yoshimatsu.
Debuting to select audiences and currently available in Japan is Supernatural: The Animation. The first few episodes are now out on Blu-ray and DVD. Expectations are high that this series will soon see a North American release. In what is currently available, the show has both an English and Japanese voice track. All 22 episodes are tentatively expected to be available, direct to video, by April 2011.
The series is produced by Madhouse, an animation studio better known for titles like Vampire Hunter D (1985), Trigun (1998) and Monster (2004). This company is certainly no stranger to the science fiction/horror genre either. Their production values and their artistry is always visually striking. The tales they adapt are sometimes surreal.
In importing Eric Kripke's property, the company has instilled a unique take into the world of Supernatural.

Toy Story 3 has got an Oscar nomination, but Japanese anime has produced works of great poignancy and depth for decades
Toy Story 3 is in the running for the best picture award at the 2011 Oscars, and pundits and public alike have been singing its praises; The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw called it "genuinely groundbreaking, pushing at the boundaries of cinema", dealing as it did with such issues as "growing up, growing old, and making way for one's children". A true coming-of-age story, then.
Bradshaw also pointed out that, because Toy Story 3 is animation, it was subject to snobbery and condescension by those who feel that live action is the only way to tell a story. He makes a good point: animation is often unfairly pushed aside to make way for "real" movies. It is a point that needs extending, for there is an entire industry, and a culture, that has been using...

For some reason, the future always seems to be a few decades away. 1984 was published in 1949. Terminator, which appropriately enough was released in 1984, set 1997 as the date for the apocalyptic “Judgement Day.” It seems strange now, after the turn of the Millennium (which happened rather uneventfully, with little more than an endless repeat of an old Prince song to mark its passing) to look back on things like Mad Max, Y2K, or the still older imaginings of such retro science fiction classics as Fahrenheit 451 or Soylent Green, but for decades, sci-fi imagineers alternated between the chills of gloom and doom and utopian fever.

In news I thought I’d never post, it seems anime studio Madhouse, who are responsible for some of the greatest anime series of all time – including: Death Note, Paprika and Vampire Hunter D, are working on an anime based on the CW show Supernatural. Yes, you read that right… Supernatural.
The original live-action series follows the Winchester brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) as they hunt creatures and other supernatural phenomena across the American landscape. The new anime will be a 22-episode season that will cover the storyline of the live-action version’s first two seasons. According to animeanime.jp, the anime:
…will not only remake the best episodes from the live-action version, but also depict original episodes not seen in the live-action version. Those original episodes will include prologues of the Winchester brothers’ childhood, anime-only enemies, and episodes featuring secondary characters from the live-action version.

Well this is interesting. Cinema Today is reporting that highly acclaimed Japanese anime studio Madhouse is producing a 22 episode season of Supernatural that will cover the first two seasons of the cult CW demon-hunting favourite starring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. According to their website, this would be the first overseas drama to ever be developed by a Japanese animation studio.
'Supernatural the Animation' will not only remake episodes of its live-action source, but will also contain original stories never seen before. The new original episodes will focus on the boys' young lives and the adventures of secondary characters. It's coming to Japan in DVD and Blu-ray formats on January 11, 2011. Warned Home Video is behind the release, and Supernatural mastermind Eric Kripke is credited as the anime's creator, which bodes well for those hoping the series is kept firmly in the show's continuity.

Although there are many videogames based upon anime series, “Gungrave” shows that such inspiration can work both ways, having been adapted from Yasuhiro Nightow’s hit 2002 Playstation title. Created by Nightow (best known for “Trigun”), the 26 episode series originally aired back in 2003, and was directed by Toshiyuki Tsuru, who was the key animator working on “Cowboy Bebop: The Movie”, and who also helmed the third “Naruto” film. Having proved popular both in Japan and in the Us, the action packed, though essentially character driven show now arrives on region 2 DVD via Mvm, handily collected in a complete box set. The series opens, quite literally, with a bang, throwing the viewer without much explanation into a battle, as the hulking Beyond the Grave is revived by a scientist and takes on hordes of strange, ghoulish opponents. As the story progresses, it transpires that his real name is Brandon Heat (voiced by...

Back from the grave, and back from the oblivion so many Geneon titles were consigned to, Gungrave comes to us this week, courtesy of Funimation, in an all new complete collection. The series is from Yasuhiro Nightow, who was also the original creator of Trigun, and it explores many of the same themes, but with a much darker twist.
The beginning of the story is a jarringly bumpy ride, in which we meet Brandon Heat — or rather, the man who used to be Brandon Heat — until he died. He has since been brought back, and goes by a new name: Grave, as in “Beyond The Grave”. At least, that’s what the creepy old mad scientist tells us. Then Grave goes for a walk, some monsters show up, and the shooting begins.

Though I’ve seen the Anime Expo advertisements on buses in years past, 2009 is the first year I’ve ever attended. While aspects made it sound like a good time to be had, the prospect of wading through a sea of smelly, poorly costumed cosplayers (some of whom were sure to be men as characters of the opposite gender) wasn’t especially appealing to me. It all seemed some barbaric gathering of people with low artistic standards and strange rituals.
Enter a friend of mine who shall be nameless for the moment. After his bringing up the upcoming Anime Expo, I got a tad nervous at the idea of actually going for once. Yet, my spirit of adventure and curiosity about the art of anime (my interest had laid dormant since the day I decided to stop liking Pokemon) wrung from me a final verdict of “Why not?” Moe enthusiasts and yaoi fangirls aside,...
